Incredible as always. The Justice clean tone and Rhythm tones are to die for
@mezmerizer02662 жыл бұрын
Justice was the best and perfect metal album.
@brandonjackson58652 жыл бұрын
I’m sure no one would argue with the clean songs but I’ve heard a lot of guitarist that hate the rhythm tones on Justice. Not me I love it something about that dry crunchy tone. I wonder if they were trying to achieve something similar to Puppets but without Cliffs bass , that master of puppets tone isn’t phenomenal it gets muddy if you drop the bass tracks off it . Maybe James wanted to achieve clarity and I think it’s the first album with EMGS on it so that people contributed. I’ve always loved And Justice for All especially as a metal rhythm player, I even like the bass drum sitting on top of the mix. I’ve always wondered what album they would’ve made next had Cliff not been killed. He had the most musical theory knowledge and could transpose harmonies for James and Kirk quicker than they can find out. I think Metallica wanted to really display their technical prowess on AJFA, but I think Cliff could’ve reeled them in a little bit and maybe streamline some of the arrangements. I’ve always just imagined that those songs wound up so long on Justice because they probably hadn’t grieved nor talked about the loss of Cliff and getting in the room and thrashing was their therapy. It’s a dark album too probably Metallica’s darkest, James peak as a lyricist possibly.

I've sometimes heard people complain about the way AJFA sounds, but to my ears, the doomy scooped tones of the rhythm guitar tracks have killer tones to them. Hetfield's choices of guitar sounds from MOP, AJFA, and the Black Album are all uniquely different yet all badass. Then again, Hetfield's aggressive and precise string attack really gives ultimate definition to let those notes speak. A hundred years from now people will still be talking about how good this shit sounds.
@1A-2A-Yay2 жыл бұрын
It's the bass on Justice that's the issue. Awful mix. Here's one guy's attempt to fix, not bad at all I wish it sounded like this when released kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJzUhZaCrLqMoJo
@Fister_of_Muppets2 жыл бұрын
@@1A-2A-Yay Well we all know about the bass issue. Lots of people have done a good job adding a bass track into it. Personally, I don't mind the way the original album sounds. Call me nostalgic, but as a young man, that album was still inspiring to me when it came out. Adding bass obviously doesn't take away, but it doesn't make it more great because I already thought it was great. Didn't stop fans from buying albums or showing up at concerts.
@giacomoneri17822 жыл бұрын
@@Fister_of_Muppets it still sounds great but it's still missing an instrument that was there until it wasn't. Of course i'll still enjoy it, but if i have to choose what to listen to, i always take the versions with the bass recovered. I don't complain about how the other instruments sounds though, they suond great, the bass issue is unrelated
@1A-2A-Yay2 жыл бұрын
@@Fister_of_Muppets no offense intended, your comment made no mention of the bass issue hence my bringing it up. Imo mixing a record and dropping out an entire instrument was weird and I personally always felt it was lacking. That said it stilll was and is a killer record and yeah it definitely didn't hurt sales or appeal and of course it'll always have a place for me. It's just an anomaly of sorts, you have the premier metal band opting for a constrained outcome on a recording, only to deliberately seek out a fuller sound on the followup record based on hearing another band's record the year after. Just a weird outcome, I would love to have been in the room when the decisions were being made just to know the rationalization
@Fister_of_Muppets2 жыл бұрын
@@1A-2A-Yay Oh I agree, it is one of those mysteries that we've heard pieces of over the years. The sound engineer claimed that Lars wanted the bass lowered to "barely audible," then dropped 8dB after that. James later said that Jason was doubling up on practically every note that James was playing, and it muddied up the mix. Jason later corroborated this... which makes me wonder if this is true. Lars has always had a good ear for arrangements (ironically though not a good ear for snare on St Anger). James has always been very critical on his guitar sound, from the percussive style of his attack on the strings, to tone and the way his guitars "cut" through the mix. So in the end I feel like they didn't feel like Jason's playing on AJFA "stood apart" from James's rythyms, like the way that Cliff did his own thing, and since he was the new guy, they just axed it and moved on. I'm sure the way it all went down in the studio was more harsh, but we may never really know the nuance or lack of that went into it.

one thing that is lost on many guitarists, is that more gain is not better, or heavier. especially in a mix with multiple layered guitars, a talented player using lower gain but proper palm muting technique will always yield that tone we all dream about. well done sir, that ESP is beautiful.

Lower gain for riffs and Higher gain for leads! Low gain on leads sounds stale af but high gain on riffs sound messy!
@Justice_Hammer2 жыл бұрын
The Justice album rhythm tracks were recorded with gains between 8.5 and 10 (9 mostly) with the lead drive between 5.5 and 7. I don’t understand this recent trend of people saying that “low gain” is how it’s done. It might be just the ticket for certain genres, but for recreating MOP or AJFA tones, you need all the gain, a couple EQ to mimic the Aphex in the loop and then an Eq for the Mesa 5 band. If you listen to the master guitar stems, there is a low mid bark that is achieved, that all recreations (digital ones) can’t recreate for whatever reason. It’s normally replaced with too much higher frequency stuff to try to compensate and most come out a little treble heavy. The stem tone has way more low end than people assume from just hearing the album. For all the hate AJFA tone gets (too scooped) vs the love for MOP tones, I still think Justice was a continuation and improvement of James tone.
@hazardeur2 жыл бұрын
@@Justice_Hammer i don't get it either. everybody with half an ear can hear there's lots of gain and compression involved to get this tone. personally, for old school metal, i prefer to use around 8 for gain, depending on the amp and overdrive of course. but i rather have too much gain then too less

@Obi Wan Shinobi To each their own, my dude. I'm guessing you like low gain, dimed out mids and low highs for that modern, colorless, boxy, warm, djenty tone? That tone that every cookie cutter, modern metal band uses so they sound exactly the same to where you can't even tell them apart? It's completely fine to hate old school metal tones, but at least when you heard that tone you knew exactly who it was, without even seeing who's playing. I prefer the 220, but would be happy to have either. Maybe if James does do a Gibson endorsement allowing ESP to make the explorer shape could be a condition. James is probably the only one that could get that done. I think the headstocks of the ESP are different enough that no one is mistaken them for an explorer. The real anomaly is that those old ESP like James played are worth way more than the Explorers of the era. I’d be more worried about someone converting a 1984 Gibson to a MX220 than the other way around.

James’ right hand is a big part of his tone, he can use less gain due to his aggressive attack and it gives the tone more clarity and our ears hear more gain than he actually has dialed in.
