I'm in Alma, MI, and I have been watching to see what you were going to do this year Jen. I wasn't sure about winter sowing with the weather being so warm this year. I was also considering direct sowing, and now that I see you doing it it gives me the inspiration to direct sow some of my cool weather veggies too. Crossed fingers, right?

Isn't it great to get out in the fresh air?!! I was out clearing up and pulling out weeds and unwanted bulbs from plants that reseeded themselves. It is sooooo warm out for this time of year. You have inspired me to go over our 4x8 bed and see what the soil is like. It was new last year and we put cardboard on top of upsidedown sod we dug up and there was very little soil on top. Hoping it has disintegrated. Think maybe it should be turned over? 🤔 Not sure. But anyway I'm itching to put a few lettuce starts in there and cover them. In North of Toronto Ontario though so still expecting a lot of low night and day temps. Maybe get some cabbages started with the grow lights. Just love the way you get out there and just do it! Hope everything turns out great.

I use raised beds. Would row cover help keep soil cool to grow broccoli or cauliflower? I am in NE Iowa. Zone 5a ... our weather - we got 2 ft of snow in a few days and otherwise warmer / up and down with temps, getting rain today which we really needed....so dry and fires start easily

Row covers help retain heat. But your soil should stay pretty cool to grow those crops. Lots of people in that zone do grow brassicas and cruciferous veggies like that in raised beds with no issue. Give it a try. 😉

Well, thankfully what I'm planting can tolerate some snow! 🤣🤣
