No, it is not right for young people to get a lower minimum wage. The woman in green is right - once you are 18 you are an adult and should be treated like any other adult.

The other side to the argument is... It motivates them to continue in school longer and not lwave early. It makes it more appealing to go to university becauae you won't be as inclined to leave education for less money. It incentives businesses to employ younger staff (given a choice where they both make equal money, are you hiring a 30 year old or an 18 year old, younger ones will mess about more, are more interested in having fun and enjoying life and rightly so where as older folk just want to keep the money coming in). Gives the businesses a reason/benefit to hire younger staff and get them experiance.

I lived by myself from the age of 18 and worked full time (50+ hours a week) and I physically couldn’t afford to live, my rent is the same as a person who is 25+...

Every single person advocating a lower minimum wage should be forced to try to live on it.

leo huseyin Businesses do better when customers have more discretionary income to spend. In any case, wages need to keep pace with inflation. That's just common sense.

DSGY 1 that's what i thought aswell, like he really doesn't get it, i work for minimum wage and that's not because I'm not good at what i do because i do the most work out of the team i work with and that isn't me being big headed my manager has told me this, but the reason I'm on minimum wage is because the people at the top of the company want to get richer and don't care about the people who make that money for them, i love my job i love the people i work with but i cant afford to stay in that job when i know for the job i do i could get paid alot more which is a report analyst/admin, I'm 21 and the person sitting next to me earns more just for being over 25 it's dumb, also the government put out the "minimum living wage" but still allow people to get paid under that amount, the system is fucked

It depends what job your doing. Some highly skilled jobs need longer to learn. People that go to University are actually paying for their education at that age. A doctor for longer. When I was 18 in the 1950s I worked in mining and shaft sinking and earned what everyone else earned. But you did earn it with firms having the ability to sack you on the spot and no health and safety.

I do not advocate for a lower minimum wage for the young but beyond decreasing immigration to make them worth more but also its that when we are young that we are just rusty we could end up fired as those with more experience will replace us simply and its better to have a job than not even at the lower end.
