Dusty, my wife and I (from south Missouri Ozarks) were just in NYC for a few days back in May. Had our youngest boy Sam (9 months) with us. Stayed in an AirBnB in Astoria, walked all over Manhattan, took subways, ferry, busses everywhere. On the way back from Yankee Stadium it was getting tight, I had the boy and his carrier in my arms, and my wife was attempting to take her light jacket off, and immediately a guy coming in saw her struggling a little bit, and proceeded to help her get her coat off. Then my wife was holding Sam, and someone gave up a seat for my wife to sit down. Our experience was that folks all over the city were friendly, even on the subway. I made it a point to be friendly everywhere we went, and folks were generally kind and friendly. Broke my pre-conceived notions about folks in NYC.

Manhattan is safer then most parts cuz it’s the city but safe is a relative term. I’ve seen some weird stuff on the train as a kid that some people would think im making up. Wouldn’t trade been born and raised here for anywhere else in the world tho

The subways are pretty interesting, being a Vermonter with some stops in Tampa and Charleston it is a bit to get use to while visiting NYC. My wife on the other hand went to High School in Manhattan in the 70’s while her family lived in Brooklyn, a hour and a half trip each way. She is not fazed by much now lol. I liked you had a nice visit and saw New Yorkers as the same as the rest of us, the only difference I have seen is they can spin up to seemingly full rage in an instant if the occasion demands it. Like I can see the veins in your neck mad. Then calmly remark “what a jerk” and go back to normal human just as fast.

Tennessee murder rate 7 per 100000, which is about national average. NYC murder rate 6 per 100000.

So an entire state's murder rate is slightly above a city's murder rate? That's just murder, doesn't include violent crime.

as a resident of the Bronx I will say there are times where it can be safe and then there are times where it won't be. Middle of the day it's for the most part fine. But after dark I would not suggest it, especially if you are a woman alone. The Bronx slasher was caught or so we think since we haven't had any stabbings in a few months but there was a guy over in my area just slashing people quite consistently not long ago at random stations. I always have some sort of weapon when I go on the train just incase... usually just mace.

When I have friends from out of state come visit me the first thing they will ask is "does everybody here wave and say hello?". Yes, it turns out when you live in Republican areas people are a whole lot nicer. Southern hospitality is a real thing. I guess threats of violence tend to make people a little angry?
