Dusty I love your story, lots of laughs : ) I drove alone from the Midwest to California when I was 18, in 1987. I got some food to go at a truck stop restaurant somewhere halfway . . Can't remember where. When the cashier gave me my wrapped up food, which included a milk, the only thing she said, with a.big friendly smile was, "You're gonna love that milk! It's real cold and creamy!" I thought, what the hell is your deal? I told my sister when I got to California, and it became a running joke when we had milk. I've never forgotten it. She was like out of a David Lynch movie, and super friendly and happy. Yikes!

We got one in PA. Musty mildewy smell, an inch of dust on the plastic plants, you get rained on in the corner booth during a storm. And the bathroom is dirtier than a gas station. But the food is home cooking and great. Perfect eggs every time. It's an old aluminum diner, and sometimes you get an electric shock if you're holding the door and put your hand on the handrail inside at the same time. And it's always packed.

That could've been the "Elias Cole" near Wantage, NJ. We were visiting High Point, NJ in August 2010 - and we passed it on our way up the mountain. "Oh, it looks so cute - a vintage country restaurant!" The place got 4 stars on Yelp, too and parking lot was 3/4 full - good signs! What a shxt show of twirling spirals of amber plastic "Shell No-Pest" strips covered with flies and dust that are hung over the tables, but the disgusting tables, floor, walls and window sills had so much greasy debris that most of the squadrons of flies were ignoring the bait and just walking around while brazingly foraging. We lost our appetite so well that we got all the way back to civilization prior to stopping in a fave spot for a good fly-less meal. I Yelp reviewed all these details and more - and the Elias Cole tried to censure me and demanded that we never stop there again. As if! ;)

I had a similar experience at work one evening. I was the new guy and was voluntold to pick up dinner for the crew. Everyone was trying to sell me on getting a sub from this place because of how they fixed the subs and how much you got for your money. I always packed a lunch but I went to pick everyone else's up anyway because I'm a team player. Long story short, I pulled up and immediately realized this was going to be bad. The place was in a building that was in disrepair. The front door was propped open, as was the back door which led out to the dumpster which was just outside the back door, like 10 feet. There was a huge floor fan set up to draw the air in from the back and blow it out the front because the AC wasn't working. I walked in and was immediately confronted with how hot it was, plus the stench of the dumpster literally being blown right into my face. There were flies everywhere. So many that you could hear the buzzing over the sound of the fan blowing. There was one person working and she was out back smoking a cigarette. She walked in and, without washing her hands, took the order and immediately started making the subs which consisted of excavating the bread out of the center of entire loaves of Italian bread with her ungloved grubby, sweaty hands. I looked closer and noticed she was a nail biter and every finger tip was a bloody nub. She was about 200 pounds overweight and sweating profusely, constantly wiping the sweat off of her brow, the sweat that didn't drip onto the food, that is. Anyway, she then stuffed the various ingredients into the hollowed out loaves, with her bare, sweaty, bloddy nub hands. I couldn't wait to get out of there! To this day, I never told my coworkers because they were so happy when I got back with their food, and they ate those subs ike they hadn't eaten in days! 😂

Love your comedy Dusty! Once you're grossed out you can't go back. Although, not quite as bad, we never went back to this place. Our lunch group from the medical center went to a popular restaurant for lunch, not our first visit, food was good. They has these tables for 10, and when the folks at the table next to us left, the busboy came by with his cart, and emptied all leftover food on the center of the table, stacked the dishes onto his cart, pushed the food into the "trash" part of his cart, wiped the table, and off he went. Thankfully, we were nearly done, and got up and left. This was over 10 years ago, and your story brought it back to mind! Yuk.

One time my Dad was driving through Texas, and way out west, in the middle of absolute nowhere, he stopped at a diner. And not only were people still smoking in there, in the year 2023, with poor lighting, bad service and disappointing food, but when he failed to finish his plate, and sat back to look at his phone for a minute, he noticed an ancient skeletal woman dressed like a prostitute just unabashedly staring at his food. So he told her she could have it. And instead of taking the plate, and thanking him, and returning to where she came from, she just sat right there at his table and scarfed it down. He was so tired and stunned, he just sat there. Until he realized HE should leave. So he paid and left. He said the place had the weirdest twilight zone/ hotel California vibe.

This kinda thing can happen when the owner of a restaurant dies, and the remaining staff either get lazy, or are so overloaded trying to keep the place going, that they don't get the basics done -- I got food poisoning a few times at a local place, after the owner died (they should have closed the doors for a few weeks until they got the situation under control, but I guess they felt pressure to keep the place open). I told them I got sick, and waited one day before calling the health inspector (to give them an honest chance to resolve the situation before the inspector came).
