Learning a new language is still important, when for example you learn a french you don't just learn the language itself you also start to understand how french people think, what is it like to be a french. With technology you can never achieve thees things, emotions

I'm guessing that technology will improve drastically, but the amount of language, voice, and tone recording it will have to do in order to understand people's ways of speaking. There's just so much that goes into that, or people will have to adjust and some change their accents in order to use technology, it's obviously nothing easy. Besides that, this video included some pretty good points, the connections that are made between people nothing can replace

Yes it is even more now in 2021! English is all right BUT not enough and has a very limited shelve life communication wise if you speak it i a country that do not speak it as a first or second official language. Each language does open commercial/cultural/work/folkloric/artisanal doors that others cannot! Also, as much as I like to use English of course being in the UK now or speaking it to folks that has it as a first language, I am noticing tough and can see as my predictions which usually becomes true in such matters, that more and more people are starting not to chose English as a second language as a reflex to use it like the Lingua Franca right away but go for French, Spanish, Russian, German, Malay etc...which are per regions of the globe and for some, internationally, lingua francas themselves. Some folks also seem to go for specialised languages like Icelandic or Maltese or Farsi to open special historical and cultural doors. Since Brexit (which I understand the reason for) and so many Trumpist extremists in the United States still, English will be used less around the world, at least and indelibly at less than 15%, by 2023-25. I speak French, English / American, Mexican Spanish and I now go all the way for the first language in the continent of the European Union and in many German diasporas around the world and in the countries that speak it officially or as a second language in some regions: German!

@ouino
@ouino 4 жыл бұрын
Hello John, the language you choose to learn is a very personal thing. You are the best judge for your individual circumstances. Languages like Spanish, German, French will be relatively easy to learn and are in high demand worldwide. Other languages like Arabic, Mandarin Chinese and Russian have lots of speakers, but will be harder to learn. Also, try to find language that you find interesting, this will help you learn. Again it will depend greatly on your personal circumstances. Good luck!

@@urbanlegendsandtrivia2023 Portuguese and German are more in demand with less supply than French and Spanish. Many Spanish-speakers live in the US, so they learn English by default, or it is assumed, so many speak it. Brazil speaks Portuguese, so there are a lot of people who need someone who speaks English. Germany is where a lot of our technology comes from, and tech products, so it's quite important in business. Chinese and Russian are fine, also Japanese, but I wouldn't recommend them to someone who only speaks English, unless he's in, or will be in, one of those countries. Spanish could help in this country, but just realize that the market is flooded. Knowing English makes learning the Germanic languages easier; and German opens the door to other Germanic languages, which become easier with it as a base. The same is true for Spanish or Portuguese: They open up the Romance-language-speaking world. As Ouino said, it really depends on you! If you like one of the easier languages for English speakers, go for it! How does such language serve you?? That's an important question! Does it serve your travels, your ethnic background, your career? I'm 49 and I speak a few languages, starting with an easier one first.

Learning languages pays off a lot when one travels to the country that speaks it. You learn what to order at a restaurant (for me, açorda, in Portugal, or feijoada in Brazil; or something with isombe in East Africa); you find out people are different, and those differences are AMAZING. You can learn how to translate or interpret for money, also. Yes, they still use people for that, I checked. Traveling to your country that speaks your new language is eye-opening!

The good thing about this, is that people will have a choice to spend on a skill or not. If it's for business then it's fine english and technology, but language can also be a hobby, like learning the piano just for fun. For me, it's about the human connections and exercising the brain, the GYM of the brain. It's like getting fat, sitting all day with comfort there is a risk. We need to use our bodies, work hard, or we will reach the Wall-e movie fat humans.

I think you cannot approach this topic objectively due to your existential concerns. Technology will indeed replace language learning. Unfortunately at this age of instant gratification, people won't even bother to make an effort to learn a new language. Like Vaynerchuck, most people's attitude towards it is superficial, only viewing it from a utilitarian angle. So those people will have their need taken care of by advanced tech capable of simultaneous translation.

I'm basically fluent and I've never even been to Korea. The whole thing kinda pisses me off. I'll only ever be able to use it in Korea and Idk if I'll ever be able to go or get a real job. Therefore I am pist I spent Years of my life thinking this would be cool but now just seems like a huge waste of my time..... And I'm high intermediate.... Almost fluent. Not even worth it unless I can get a good job in Korea..... 😠

I mean you can always just use it to talk to Koreans. And idk if you can get a job in Korea but knowing the language at least opens up the possibility of getting a job there... There may be other steps to accomplish as well though, but you already completed one of them. I'm starting to learn Japanese but I watch a lot of anime/read LNs. So even if I never move to Japan it at least has a use. (Which I probably will never move to Japan since I don't have a degree and I'd be looked down upon.) After that I think I'll try to learn Spanish. Lots of use there.

Technology are making many dumber, believe me! Learning to speak other languages is actually a sign of intelligence. I speak for languages already.

@UC2Lq6x7yxBCHlrYti2vOCHA "to be honest" you said. Your lack of intelligence radiated in your statement. You probably know only English.

Speaking languages doesn’t make us more intelligent to be honest, even the dumbest and laziest person can learn it just by speaking to others, it’s an innate ability that we all have as humans. It does prevent our brains from developing Alzheimer’s and similar neurodegenerative diseases though, apart from being a lot of fun, at least for me.

I don't even understand why languages are connected to culture in the first place. Why can't people just study English and save a lot of time for everyone?! Who gives a rat's ass about culture? Why be so obsessed with culture more than humanity? Why am I called the narrow-minded one because I refuse to learn a language? And what is with people saying "languages are for the connection with people"? I mean yeah how can I connect with people when only they can connect with me easily because I speak German and they don't speak my language? Isn't the connection thing suppose to go two ways? What is with people who say "If you talk to a man in his language he understands, it goes to his head but If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart." So after spending a year of misery in a new language, are they willing to donate their hearts? I mean organ donors are valued anyways.

As long as I can say 'you didn't lick it as I told , so there's no tip for you' in every language is sufficient to me

Sorry to say this, but only a native English speaker can ask this question. It was probably one of the reasons for Brexit and for America First (even though most people don't realize that, besides a lot of immigrant languages, there are 5 native Celtic languages in the UK and hundreds of native indigenous languages in the US. The English and the Anglo-Americans never really bothered to learn or respect those languages... So is it a surprise they are the worst in learning /speaking other languages? No it isn't...)

Wow, we found the triggered snowflake. 草 Wanting to focus on the poverty and problems in your own countries first isn't a bad thing. Not wanting 9%inflation and starving children under Biden isn't a bad thing. Not wanting to be a puppet under the German EU, and having autonomy over your own country isn't a bad thing either. I know plenty of people who follow one of those two movements who know two or more languages.

He meant technology can't replace human interaction. In terms of how you say something. Conveying emotion, body language, personality, connection, exc. It's not always what you say but how you say it. Technology can't ever replace being a human connection on those levels.
