@@Slarti27-gy1xj Read the actual RFCs for yourself. I would also say W. Richard Stevens' "TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1" is mandatory reading. And use Wireshark as much as possible. This is extremely educational and very important if you want to be able to troubleshoot when things don't work.

Intern (a few months) ---> Desktop (1yr; yes, it is helpful while you learn IP) ----> CCNA ---> NOC engineer (and never stop certs, learning and then pushing your manager for more and be ready for gaps when people move/leave). 202x ... you should have Bash, Python and security basics too.

There are no internships to be found though... Realistic path nowadays would be get a degree, get CCNA and a few other certs to get to Helpdesk and then pray to God a spot opens up to be a network engineer.

Coding is easy to learn and replicate. When it comes to systems engineering, systems management, systems troubleshooting, the learning data doesn’t really exist. You’d need a different type of AI. This guy explains the difference perfectly. The decision trees don’t exist yet. The AI would need to spend time learning a specific environment, and most companies aren’t ready to allow an AI to run wild on their network making changes. Coding is easier to play with in a test environment.

Skilled people with enough knowledge to understand how things actually work will always be in demand. Yes, AI will do most of the easier work and remove a lot of simple jobs like working in the register in stores etc. But in the IT industry, what to do when something does not work and AI is not able to fix it? AI will remove jobs and AI will create jobs. That's the "regular" cycle of new technology and development of society

I often hear people making the argument that there will always be network engineers, just like there will always be plumbers, electricians, etc. While it's true that network engineers will not go away altogether, people making this argument often leave out the fact that there have been fewer and fewer of these kinds of networking jobs over the last 10 years... Added to this indignity is the fact that these more stable networking jobs that currently exist are being monopolized by people who have been in the industry. So the question you should really be asking yourself is: how smart is it to get into a field that is (and has been) shrinking?

Linux is a must for modern-day network engineers, learn Linux in general, deep dive into Linux Netfilter framework. You don't need to know or write DPDK/XDP code, but knowing Netfilter framework, is, in my opinion, critical.

Like him I don't think AI will take our jobs. Take network monitoring, in a way you could say they are AI, there's some super powerfull stuff out there. They basically do all the troubleshooting we had to do before they existed, but we still need to feed them with all the correct data, create all the sensors, dependancies, create dashboards and setup the notifications for it to work. You might even spend more resources and time running and maintaining it, but you still need to physically go and solve the problem, support will still get that phonecall, but it's a different type of conversation already knowing what's wrong. AI will shift our attention, but the fundamentals will remain the same, it's important to learn these fundamentals, these "blueprints".

Yes, you'll still have low-level networking jobs but they will be physical/low-paying jobs with rarer cases of moving up. The way the industry is going is you have 1 high-level network admin and all the low level stuff is done by an MSP, and soon AI. I'm just stating the fact that AI will replace the jobs of quite a few networking admins. It will be harder to get the job you want and even harder to get into a high-level position. In 10 years there will be fewer networking positions.

You will never be able to learn more or do it faster. Just a fact, hence why we have computers in the first place. If you want my advice as someone who has been in IT for 22+ years and currently works in cybersecurity, learn a trade or another skill that cannot be easily automated because these jobs are absolutely on the verge of being or are being replaced as I type this. Sorry for the reality check, but copium and hopium are not going to put food on your table. Remember, these channels have to keep you coming back so that they earn revenue. The facts on the ground and the exponential growth of AI say differently than these and other channels want you to believe.

I use gpt almost every day for various things. It's useful, but he's absolutely correct. For now at least. In the longer term I think it's a different story, the way I have always looked at this is: We know intelligence is possible because we all have a real world example sitting on our shoulders. It's not something like fusion where we know it's possible but the requirements are extreme, we know fusion is possible, but we don't know that it could be practical as a power source. Our own brains have pretty low energy requirements and likely are not particularly physically exotic. It's inevitable I think that we increasingly figure this out, and when we do I suspect we will find that we are pathetically stupid in comparison to what is possible. At that point we really will face these existential questions people are losing their minds over today. It takes time though for industries to actually apply the technology, even once it's available we are very slow at that. Very few businesses have molded their business processes around technology we have had for over 20 years. There simply has not been enough skilled people to do the work and as a result almost every industry runs off line of business applications which are basically crimes against humanity.

AI will not have the physical capacity to run wires, swap out a nic, install a new router, physically test hardware etc. Ai would just help streamline the brain power needed for the software aspect of networking like subnet calculations etc.

Let's be honest,before network engineers are replaced with AI,all of the other IT jobs should vanish. Think that if AI cant replace a programmer,it cant replace a job that requires very complex movements and thinking,we are so far away that I am studying to become a cybersecurity expert knowing that no AI cant defend itself... And if it can someday I will just be a networking engineer,no AI can connect a cable or mount a rack,that is just stupid (price,time,maintenance nightmare)
