December 2024. Bought my (November) 2006 td5 hard top 95k miles. Dinitroled,remapped, lots of new parts, full service history, two owners plus new windows all round. Seller wanted 16k I paid 13k. Not found another comparable for and less so hoping I got a bargain. Also it’s my daily. Had it checked out by a LR mechanic and so far all ok. Enjoying while things are good 😅

I paid 55k NZD for my 2014 110 DC in 2017.it's a NZ new full spec,with no DPF. They went to 100k NZD a couple of years ago,but i think they've dropped back to about 75k to 80k in the last year. The new defender wasn't very well recieved at release,but there are more and more on New Zealand roads. They are iconic,and they will go anywhere,they are reliable (i have had 5 defenders and apart from stuff i have broken or abused,they go and go). However there is a limit to what people can afford really. I am 4 mths away from being sixty,so am looking at trading on a 2017 Range Rover autobiography lwb SD V8 with the same kms,for less than my defender is worth

There might be a correction but it’s an iconic design and much loved. Furthermore, it’s a useful vehicle, not just something nice to have as a weekend car, so it has two audiences. With every year that passes there is a smaller stock of good ones and so, in the long run, I can see prices climbing back up as these become more and more a classic car where authenticity and originality are king.

Hi Marcus. I bought my 1997 Defender 90 300Tdi from a friend in 2019. It was a mess! It was about to fail an MOT due to a rusted through chassis which would need welds on top of welds. It is classed as a hardtop van with no rear side windows. The doors were all damaged, the sunroof leaked, the seats were shot and the headlining was hanging loose. After showing it to a local expert, I was told it was worth £4,500ish and could be put back in decent condition for around £18,000. I paid £4,200 for it and have had it “sympathetically” restored with a new galvanised chassis, but doing a lot of the straightforward work myself. I have spent well over £20,000 up to now buying mainly original spec equipment without being tempted to overdo the bling (no offence intended). It has done 100,000 miles and runs well. I have retained the original colours of Arles blue with an “off-white” roof. I never cared about making a profit but would have liked it to remain worth what I’ve spent on it. However, I think I’d be very lucky not to lose money if I sold it. I’ve also probably restored it so well that I am reluctant to drive it - too good to drive syndrome?

I have a Defender 200tdi immaculate restored bought it in Feb’23. Have kept an eye on prices and they are around the same if not up a bit despite the macroeconomic crash. Not that many around and it’s a novelty. Most of us who can afford £15-25k for these sort of Defenders aren’t really bothered about a coupe of grand either way price change. It isn’t an investment it’s a lifestyle choice. If you have to ask yourself if you can afford it then you probably shouldn’t be getting involved

I've got one that's done about 3 miles since it was repaired, rewired, fuel system overhaul, chassis welded and battery box replaced. plus an extensive list of other repairs and full metallic black respray. Its 1989 van back no windows etc. I gave 8k for it and spent nearly 2k getting it ready for the road. its not been off road the underneath parts are all new springs shocks rubbers etc etc. She has had a lot of time and expertise put into her to keep the old original 2.5 td engine running well. I was advised to keep it that way rather than put a 300TDI in her. When the MOT was done and she was ready... I drove her from the garage and that was enough for me to know I had dropped a massive Bollock. This was not going to get me 160 miles up the motorway and back for work. I would have to set off pretty early and travel at 50mph...heheee. I'm sure its a beast off road and all the other things like the supermarket shop. But the dream was not the reality for me. The car was previously a cat C in a past life. So the last owner took the opportunity to replace the stolen panels and do the vehicle up to a higher standard etc. Puma bonnet front and rear bumpers Led light bar Checker plate panels etc etc.. She looks like a beast with the steel rims BFs etc and my mechanic told me it would sell any day of the week for at least 12k. All she needs is a drivers seat pad and the paintwork wants a professional buff. The car is almost ready for the MOT to be done again thats how long it has been sat on my driveway waiting to be taken on her next journey. I had a dealer come and offer me a whole lot less than I had invested for it a while ago. It was comical how he thought I would take his offer when I knew he had a buyer lined up to take it off him at a silly profit. My brother is a car trader so he heard there was a good buy being punted around the local traders. I did enjoy the way he dissed the car to make it seem like he was doing me a favour taking it off my hands. I'm waiting for a genuine enthusiast to come along and look at it. I don't mind losing money but I want her to go to a good home. its like one of my puppies or ferret kits. I would never let them go to someone I don't like or who isn't educated enough on the subject.

Hi, I fairly recently bought (Dec 2022) a 2014 Corris grey XS90 with 31k on the clock. I paid £37,750. Since then I have replaced pretty much everything on the exterior to OEM+ while maintaining its original styling bringing it into the 21st century, so no roof rack or massive bumpers & winches etc. I am close to £46k deep in the car following some mechanical work with future plans for bucket seats etc. I think someone below summarised the pricing perfectly "How do you put a price on cool?" and that's what defenders are, cool. The value is completely subjective and almost completely unjustified due to their build quality. As the cars get older, they need more maintenance, and I think we will see a price increase again over the next few years as the numbers of these vehicles dwindle from neglect, leaving the nicer examples few and far between. We also have economic factors, buyers are much more risk-averse at the moment. Judging by how much I've spent on what was a 'clean example', defender ownership isn't for the faint-hearted or people afraid to get their wallet out. I have accepted that I will never get back what I've put into the car. Even though it is the bane of my life, I will continue to love it and let it drain my bank account with the hopes of adding future defenders to my collection.

Well said, I for one could not care less what they are worth or what other people think, I have my 110 Wolf because I want the very best Land Rover I can, and I’m building a vehicle I want, not what might appeal to the masses, that’s Toyotas, Nissan or Fords job…Mine will be built, not bought and it’ll be unique to me and I do t give a single fig if anyone else thinks it’s worth a 100 quid or £100k, I’m never selling it anyway !

They are a cult car where I am. I have drivers of RR, Bentley, Aston Martin checking out my 90 on the road. If I meet someone and arrive in the 90 they always talk about the car, or say "cool car!". I am not sure of the point you are making . I bought my TD5 County h/T in 2006 , 6k miles , reg 2005 with boost alloys . £ 13995 +VAT .Now 107k , daily driver , slightly modified . Waxoyled every year , serviced by specialist . All original paint !! Value is probably £14k - £ 20k . If you buy a classic car of any type to own , not as an investment , the pleasure is in the ownership . What does it matter what it is worth , if you pay over the odds for the right car does it matter? Not to me . Simply because that is the car you really wanted and not one that was the right model within my budget .. I owned an RS2000 fro 85 to 97 , sold it for £3500 .00 . the car was mint . Value now in that condition £ 20 - £40k . If you buy a classic car as investment and you are concerned over its value then you have the wrong car .Buy a fast ford , with an RS prefix !!

I feel quite ambivalent when people start looking at cars as investments. I buy a vehicle because I want that particular vehicle to drive, not because I hope to make a profit when I sell it. I’ve had many Land Rovers in the past and only sold them due to other factors. E.g. I sold my last defender TD5 90XS which was my daily driver, because I changed jobs and had to commute from Cornwall to Heathrow, and at about 30mpg, the defender was just to expensive to use for a weekly long distance commute. Also at the time I could not afford to buy a second vehicle just for the commute. Now I’ve retired I’ve got another Land Rover again, which I’ll keep for as long as I can drive. Ironically, my 1975 ex military Land Rover with its v8, as a historical vehicle, is ulez exempt, although I won’t be driving it anywhere near any city adopting this ulez extortion scheme. Yes, it might make me a profit when I eventually sell it, but that is not the reason I bought it. Just my opinion.

Interesting perspective, I would be too depressed if I was constantly checking the valuation on the cars that I own, I believe that it would consume me, as it appears to have you. That said, I do a bit. of work most years working out the market value for the insurance (for both of my classic cars) I have agreed value policies, this work is subjective and its worth the effort. Agreeing with your comments that originality and authenticity are key.

The prices have always been high. We sold an M plate in 97 and it would be worth that much today. Same for a 57 sold in 2011. I don’t think defender prices have inflated as much as other make/mode have been over recent times.
@pam3071 Жыл бұрын
Think the old defender prices went through the roof because of the new defender, no one really liked the look of the new one. Over the last few years people have started to warm to them and now you see more new defenders on the road then old ones, less favorble so prices of old ones are slowly coming down
@SpokyDoodles Жыл бұрын
Defenders are a very safe and worthy investment! The more original and less tinkered with the better as people are realising these are investment pieces and are holding on to them. Also with the amount getting nicked and the rate of inflation is also putting up the prices.

When the penny starts dropping with more & more people that the latest "modern" vehicles are absolute total junk, stuff like Defenders will go nowhere but up in price. My 2014 110 is now, if i have a look at the common sales platforms, almost 10k Euros more then i paid back at the time. Especially since it was never a daily driver, never seen a winter / salt, therefore without any rust of course, always parked in a garage. But i use it of course - for travelling - converted to a small camper. I am happy that the prices are like this, but i would sell the Defender - because what to buy then? I bought my Defender 90 van, 2007 2.4 TDCI, in September 2021 for £17,500. It was on 125k miles. In hindsight, I think I paid too much. It was a base spec model, wind up windows, no air con, ABS, air bags, etc. Did have Exmoor trim upgraded leather seats but that was about it for extras. Body work was shabby, lots of dents and dings, scratched to hell on the side panels, but it's a Defender that's to be expected. Most importantly, chassis was spotless which was what I was looking for. Spent £900 sending it to SW Rust Proofing for underseal, £900 on new tyres, and about £400-500 on some extras like side steps, Optimil reverse camera, etc. I put it for sale in March this year because it looked to me like the prices were falling off, and it spent most of its time just sat on the drive not really using anyway. Within a week, someone came and bought it on the spot. Didn't even haggle the price, just paid the full asking. I listed it for £19,000 thinking everyone always tries to knock you down a couple grand so would take £17,000 after some negotiating, so was well happy that I got the full asking. Personally, I don't think it was worth £19,000 in the current market, but I was lucky that the right person came along who wanted exactly what I had. He was even happy it didn't have electric windows as "Less to go wrong".
