Fifteen years after the US-led invasion of Iraq, the consequences of the subsequent war continue to be debated. According to the UN Refugee Agency more than four million people have been displaced. There is no widely accepted figure for civilian deaths, but estimates run from the hundreds of thousands into millions.
"Would we like a do-over, of course we would," says Mark Kimmitt, retired US Brigadier General who served as deputy director of operations and chief military spokesman in Iraq from 2003 to 2004.
While Kimmitt accepts the US "did get some things wrong" in Iraq, he says his country's military has nothing to apologise for.
Actions taken by the US at the beginning of the war continue to have reverberating consequences, including allegations that US detention centres such as Camp Bucca became breeding grounds for armed groups in Iraq and helped to lay the groundwork for the formation of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (also known as ISILor ISIS).
"I was worried at the time that the mass incarceration of what the troops on the ground believed to be security threats would come back to haunt us," says Kimmitt. "I told that to my colleagues and I told that to my superiors." While he agrees the Iraq War may have inspired violent groups, Kimmitt insists ISIL was not created in Iraq.
Kimmitt served in Iraq at a time of alleged massacres committed by US soldiers. When asked about dozens of unarmed civilians being killed in places like Fallujah, Haditha, Mahmoudiya and Balad, Kimmitt refutes any claim that civilians were intentionally killed by American soldiers.
"I am not suggesting for a moment that war doesn't sometimes kill innocent civilians. That's the price of war," he says. "As a soldier what you do is try to minimise it at all costs. But anybody that believes that collateral damage doesn't happen in war is living in a fool's paradise."
In this week's UpFront special, we challenge former US Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt on the consequences and lessons learnt after 15 years of war in Iraq.

If the US government won't apologize for slavery or ethnic cleansing of Indian people, how do you expect them to apologize for Iraq?

Wont apologize to native indians? They are not required to pay taxes, they get free land, get to build casinos (funded by the government) and many of them received free housing. If that is not considered an apology, then IDK wtf is!

Eric Von oh the land US was going to run pipe lines through until the nation boycotted the banks involved? Most those casinos are not owned by native Americans, but by White People who claimed Indian years ago when the rule was invented, I mean this is common US history that has been shown and exposed.

Covert Puppytwo When have we ever apologized? American exceptionalism is alive and vibrant, do you tell a person who repeatedly abuses his power to stop apologizing after 1 or 2 times? So we should continue to abuse our power but because we apologized for one crime we can no longer apologize for another?

If its intentional? those soldiers should absolutely be prosecuted but this so called journalist sounds like an angry child that lacks critical thinking and has no ability to consider anything other than his own opinions.

Hasan makes 3 central flawed arguments. I refute them below: Everyone notice the edits when Mark gives an answer to a question - the cutaways are very clear to hide his actual responses. Al Jazeera has been well documented for manipulating debates/discussions like this to push their anti-US narrative. Aside from this obvious manipulation to the trained eye, it's worth also noting several myths and fake news points made by Hasan. Point 1: Invasion was NOT illegal! Use of Force was authorised by the BINDING UNSCR 1441, specifically by 678 & 687, which were called upon (without edit), to Use of Force. As John B. Bellinger III, former Legal Adviser for the Department of State (05-)09, and Senior Associate Counsel to the President and Legal Adviser to the National Security Council at the White House from 01-05, notes on his Lawfare piece titled, The Chilcot Inquiry and the Legal Basis for the Iraq War "The Council had in effect decided in advance that Iraq was already in material breach and would be in further material breach if it did not comply with its obligations under 1441 (which it did not), thus reaffirming the right of member states to use force pursuant to UNSCRs 678/687, as states had done through the 1990s." This is noted by other world-leading experts: Pedrozo, Raul. A, "Legal basis for US Military Operations in Iraq" The War in Iraq: A Legal Analysis US Naval War College, 2010, 45-48 Wall, Andru E. "Was the 2003 invasion of Iraq legal?" The War in Iraq: A Legal Analysis US Naval War College, 2010, 69-78. William H. Taft IV; Todd F. Buchwald, Preemption, Iraq, and International Law , The American Journal of International Law, Vol. 97, No. 3. (Jul., 2003), pp. 557-563. And many, many more. Also worth noting as well that several UNSC Resolutions AFTER 1441, CONTINUED to authorise Use of Force, occupation, and handing over sovereignty and for member states to continue in stability operations, such as UNSCR 1483, 1511 and 1546. Point 2: WMDs were FOUND! FOIA documents titled: A)"Iraq: Recovered Chemical Weapons Update (April 2009 - March 2011)" b) "Iraq: Chemical Weapons Continue to be Recovered" c) "Iraq: Chemical Weapons Assessment January 2008- March 2009" For those that do not know: Chemical weapons = WMDs as they are CBRN. Point 3: No one stated Iraq under Saddam had AQ connections. The USIC DID confirm he had connections a decade prior, however, NOT connected to 9/11. This is why the 2002 AUMF did not cite any connection to 9/11. ^So that's the 3 larger mistakes Hasan made, (has always made, and will continue to make). I'm sorry to the gullible idiots in this comment section and the viewers in general who think unsupported talking points makes a coherent argument. This is basically a verbal tabloid headline being regurgitated in conversation, typical for propaganda.

I honestly laughed at 5:12 when he said Saddam wouldn’t run a Mesopotamian holiday spa. I’m not saying he would but if you ask any Iraqi today if they would prefer Iraq today or Iraq during Saddams reign, they would most likely choose Iraq with Saddam as leader. I’m an Iraqi Kurd, only reason I mention that is because plenty of my relatives were killed because of Saddam. My father escaped captivity a day before he was going to be executed. Yet my Father, Mother and all my relatives all prefer Saddam Hussein 1000x over what we have right now. Ps: I love my fellow Iraqis, arabs, Turkmen and Assyrians. So don’t start a Kurdistan debate, please.

Mr. Kimmitt, even Tony Blair apologized. How difficult is it for you to just apologize to the Iraqi People? I'm an Iraqi born Chaldean Christian American Citizen. My heart weeps for all of the American/British/Australian and other Military men and women who were killed and injured. I do know many children that are still scarred! As an adult, I'm still praying for God to completely heal my mind and heart from everything that I have seen, read and heard from my family members. I love and bless my beautiful America and will always defend her, however YOU GOT IT WRONG......PERIOD!

Amazing discussion. The Americans couldn't oppose what Russia does today in Syria. They made a grave mistake in invading Iraq. Russia will redeem Syria.

Has anyone asked the Iraqis are they willing to accept a meaningless word "Sorry" for the deads of hundreds of thousands of men, women, elders, and children; millions of injured and refugees that no country is willing to accept? It's no different someone kills your mother and then comes to you to apologize. Are you willing to accept the apology? That's exactly how the Iraqis feel about American's apology.
