I’ve dumped everything but KZbin. I use it for guitar stuff and a few podcasts….And I’m better off

Yes. Subscribe to your local newspaper, read the AP, join a civic organization, pursue a hobby, read a book, preferably a classic.

Unfortunately, once reputable newspapers are now owned by billionaires and it's increasingly harrder to know where to turn. Democracy Now still seems like a good choice and Heather Cox Richardson's "Letters."

My Facebook account got hacked when I was traveling in 2023 and I was never able to get it resolved. I'm not on Instagram, WhatsApp, X or other platforms. I do like TikTok and KZbin but other than that, I don't miss being on all these social media platforms. That said, younger people might be more impressionable and less discerning about the content. From the advent of traditional media (radio, tv, print), it's always evolving but in general, I think anyone over 18 should be able to access whatever they choose.

one problem with getting rid of social media is you have newsmakers that do not own a printing press on it, so there are folks like me that use it like newsprint. so if you delete it you may find less news.

There's no shortage of "news", more and more of it generated by AI for social media engagement and commercial "news" sources every day.

I think there is a psychology of a stimulus or mental process that is becoming a serious mental addiction that requires professional treatment. The amount of subliminal messages hiddened on social media is literally changing the chemical makeup of the mind. We end users know this to be true on some level but we keep following blindly. It used to be who we were following on social media, now it is how they follow us for their personal greed or beliefs. History will record this time as a serious addiction for many people and what new ways we were able to treat this as an illness.

What are the main reasons that lead you to consider deleting social networks? Which social networks do you use most frequently? What do you like most and least about social networks? What alternatives do you currently have for communicating and connecting with other people?

Text messages. Voice calls on landline or mobile. Postcards. Greetings cards. Letters. All alternative to social media. (I remember the photocopy end of year family newsletter, with most of the content of no interest to most of us who got them.)

Reddit is going downhill fast now that the CEO is pushing profit over quality. Individualism and "doing what's best for you" is why we're where we are right now. There's things in life that are immeasurably valuable. But their value is derived in opposition to profits. Sometimes a thing can be valuable without being profitable and the more "profit" you extract the less valuable the thing becomes.

I don't use social media any more except for youtube. Is there any point in removing the facebook, twitter accounts? (Horrified when I did an image search for my facebook photo name - dozens all over the internet, but still have all my teeth.) I like letters, love postcards and landline phone calls.

I canceled my subscription to the washington post five years ago because I was tired of the constant onslaught of silly progressive ideology and subscribed to the wall street journal. the news pages at wsj are still reasonably unbiased, they do a much better job of separating news reporting from opinion/editorial. I don't read the opinion pages of the wsj but at least i get some reasonable news reporting

Most hacks and frauds end up having to turn off comments or at the very least never respond to them

Yeap. I ditched Meta after I saw a clip of Zuck on Rogan followed immediately by someone sharing a conspiracy theory about how the LA fires were caused by Government laser weapons.
