Love the 10 minute recap, Steve. I had something come up and had to miss the live webinar, and now I'm not sure of when I'll be able to watch the replay of it. This appears to be a nice summary of it. I have used Evernote for years (based in part on your recommendation) and while I'm not ready to move to something else, I appreciate the attention you give to issues like this for us (for me). Keep up the good work and I'll continue to support you through Patreon.

Yes. The 10 min recap is a great idea. My life is in Evernote. All my business receipts, every contract, every online service that does not offer paper receipts, everything scanned in with the ScanSnap, every purchased software number. I’ve stopped using it for note taking (using TextEdit and Apple Notes) and client management, Slack has taken over that.

Steve it is a great idea to do a 10 min. recap of your webinars. I hope to see more vids like this. Because of time difference in my time zone I am not able to see your webinars live, and sometimes I don't have enough time to watch whole thing. So recaps like that one for me it is a great idea. Than you very much for your really good job here.

i tried Google Keep, One note and a combination of others but i alway end up coming back to evernote. that is the problem if you leave evernote where do you go? Evernote still works for me. this is why i took advantage of the 40% and renewed my account for another year. if Evernote goes down i'm going down with it. As for executives departing Evernote i bet that has to do more with money or profit sharing than company ideas. just my opinion i have no inside information.

Love this 10 minute version. I rarely have time/chance to catch the webinar live (usually just hits at a bad time for my day) so I appreciate having the recap so I can get the base of what was talked about. :D Can't chime in on this topic. . .I never really could get into Evernote, in part becasue I don't have a phone, or mobile device, so taking notes is just easier on a Onenote/Dropbox setup - but I've had this happen with other services, so it's interesting to hear the talk on it. (And realize I never WILL get into it unless something drastically changes. Since it is something I look at and did look at while I briefly had a mobile device. pfft)

I don't use Evernote much anymore and instead use Google Drive. Forming tables in Evernote was not very smooth and I had to adjust the column widths often and it just didn't look right. Maybe they've made some changes to that now, but I use Google Sheets & Docs for stuff like that. Evernote has become a repository of documents for me and I don't actively use it like I did before. Now I just save my receipts for when my car is serviced. I had the paid version, but when I saw that I wasn't using it as much and hadn't planned on increasing my activity with it, I downgraded to the free version and it's sufficient for me. So, you're right, Evernote is becoming a legacy app rather than a go-to app and I think it will be very hard for EN to become a go-to app again.

My issue is the the mobile type capture is generally so good, whe I last checked other - they were no where as good. Plus thinks like clipping an Amazon page - something I do alot, in OneNote you get garbbage, in a browser it is worse - but in EverNote is is nice and tidy and usable... ... Issue against OneNote - is a lack of tags, as with photos or Evernote - the location of the notes doesn't matter - I can form a sub-set based on tags, filter that down with a temporary tag and have my 10 to 20 from 20k note made into an nice linked ToC to drop into Word or Excel or EN/ON for the project, all with virtually no work. OneNote can't do that - yet

Actually Steve, I thought this was brilliant. It’s lovely to have a 10 minute recap of a more long winded conversation that you may have had with your audience who may have been available during the webinar. It seems to me that its a chance for you to condense the main topic and the main opinions into what I need for just 10 minutes of my time. That doesn’t mean that I don’t watch and enjoy everything else that you do, but an hour is a big investment of time sometimes… And at least this way you still allow me to get the knowledge. By the way, like you I love Evernote and I’m also heavily invested. I would benefit from hearing your opinions on ways to weather this storm like looking at other alternatives, migrating, genuinely getting under the hood of how to do this and the implications for both cost and time involved.

The 10 minute recap is a great idea....I started the re-play twice and was interrupted by work... that many key people leaving Evernote means that there is something wrong internally....could be the product... could be something like salaries and retirement. Usually, the reason leaks out. We've got too much invested to leave. Plus, I'm happy with what they've got. For us, no need for anything else....and I sure as heck don't want another pass word to have to keep up with. I'm going to make another post on the business side of this issue..... in case Evernote is watching.

Hey, Steve. Great to see you tackling head on the relevancy issue that has risen up with regard to Evernote. It is a feeling that has been under the skin for some time now but as of late it has come to the surface and now I am starting to see a lot of folks pose the question of whether or not to leave Evernote. I have to say that I got into Evernote because of your videos from way back in 2014 and immediatley found the value in this amazing note-taking app. We were crusing the blue skies there for some years but then, gosh darn it, Evernote seemed to have forgotten about customer satisfaction all together. Today we know Evernote is amazing but it is slowly and surely slipping to the way side with no significant updates and an ever growing list of strong competitors; which brings me to Notion. Notion has been buzzing through out this year and, while it is not exactly a note-taking app as is the likes of Evernote, it is definitely putting on the pressure as far as modern productivity spaces in concerned. As you know, Notion is free to use up to 1,000 blocks of content. A few weeks ago I hit that limit and was faced with the decision of considering it as "Nice, but not just yet" or go all in and get into one of their subscription plans. Long story short, I'm on the personal plan. So, what about Evernote? I am certain I do not want to have payment plans all over. The monthly plans are fine but add up 3, 4, or 5 services and it gets expensive very quickly. It all points to me cancelling my Evernote premium by the year's end. There is still a lot to say about Notion, especially in the coming months with new updates and also their much awaited web clipper. In the meantime, Notion is still the new kid on the block and it is only normal that everybody be scratching their head trying to figure out exactly what it does; sometimes doing a bit of everything is like doing nothing at all. I think that the term "Personal WIKI" is exactly right and the best starting point to understand what Notion is. From there, we may start looking at the minutia of what that heck it does and just how it compares to a specialized app. Francesco just posted a video where he presents a model of what Notion might look like if it were to replace apps like Todoist, Trello, Google Calendar and, yes, Evernote. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipDcfImFmbWsqbs

Love this 10 minute condensed version! And, a great topic, I hadn't paid attention to Evernote's troubles of late, being a OneNote user - but - Notion looks very promising, and if it does what it appears to claim to do, it could consolidate my CRM subscription, Asana subscription and OneNote into the one platform where they all need to co-exist. I prefer watching the full webinar but couldn't this week Steve because it kept crashing and restarting. Webinar Jam is the only one that doesn't seem to cause me any problems. With regard to Evernote and alternatives I've switched to Nimbus Note. It's worth anyone spending just a few minutes of their time checking it out. You might be pleasantly surprised. With regard to the 10 minute review I would only ever watch it if there was a problem with the main webinar. Although I can see why it might be useful to some people.

John - I'm exploring Nimbus Note as well. Looks very promising. The developer has made it clear that Nimbus Note is intended to be a "better" Evernote. It is closely modeled on Evernote so there's little or no learning curve so far. Nimbus also imports Evernote files for those who need that functionality. An annual license is $45.

Thanks for the update about Evernote. It is sad to hear. I used Evernote early on. I had it on my computers, and phone, and used it for everything. I jumped ship when they moved to a pay model, and I moved my notes to OneNote, and I haven't looked back. With Evernote, I tried many different ways of organizing, but OneNote fit me better with how I take notes. I still use the Evernote web clipper because it is still a very useful tool. Sometimes it will clip articles that OneNote can't clip. Even though I use OneNote, it's still sad to see EverNote spiral downwards.

I have recently started migrating my notes to a service called Standard Notes because one of my primary concerns with Evernote is privacy and encryption. So far, I am very pleased with this new service, though I still depend on Evernote because I have invested many years and loads of data into the app. ...just thought some people on here may appreciate the tip about Standard Notes (because I had never heard about the tool just a couple of weeks back and now I am loving it!)

However now I'm worried after reading so many c suite leaving. Like you mention too, not a good signnal. Would love to see a video on notion. Thanks for the tip. Will definitely look in to this. I wonder very much though if it's possible to split my personal notes and collaborative work notes in the same app. I'm the person that merges everything work and business in the same app. In it I need to be able to create a private and work section. I seriously dislike managing 2 todoist apps for example.

A great idea having this digest of your webinar: gives a flavour of what we've missed and an incentive to watch it if the topic is of interest to us. Among solutions that could replace Evernote (and I'm a big user of EN), you should have a look at thebrain.com that brings a very original approach in data and information management. I'm using both. I could run away from EN and I will definitively have a look at Notion.

if I'm still right, you can use the free version for one device (no sync). Their procedure is different from a usual note-taking software and I see it as an additional way to manage information in my paperless working environment. I would recommend watching their introductory tutorial (www.thebrain.com/support/tutorials) and see if it can help your needs. Personally, I really like three things: (i) you can connect/download anything from word docs to web link pages, (ii) you create an arborescent architecture but you see only one fraction of it, (iii) you can connect a node to as many as other nodes, which results in a very organic structure. There are much more other topics, and FYI, I'm not affiliated at all, but I think this solution is largely underrated for what it can brings.

Love the 10 min recap. And boy am I worried about the future of Evernote. I already was worried, but when they announced the new logo and typography that really got me worried. I don’t know what reaction they were hoping for, but I’m sure they’re not getting that reaction. They better start investing in innovation or Evernote will be dead soon. And, to be honest, that would make me very sad.

I really like the recap, but I must admit if I get the bottom line here in 10 minutes I’m less likely to watch full length. I hope you keep up the summaries though

Recently gave Evernote another try after trying it way back. Disappointed with functionality so do not use it (power user of many other tools). For notes currently using Trello and Google Docs. Evernote problems: -not clear how to set default Notebook -Mac app crashes on exit every time -Trello plugin does not work well at all -web app slow to load -too frequently forced log out (

I'm a long time users and went to Evernote as a Catchnote refugee. I'm afraid to update Evernote because did an upgrade and it broke the search feature. I dependant on Evernote at work. If I were to leave Evernote, it would have to be a painless transition because I have thousands of notes.

I have always found Evernote does things the wrong way around. I prefer starting with the Action item. I use Todoist for much of this. Tagging actions into a project or group pulls together the little pieces. Using Todoist forces action and priority setting. Evernote is another set of folders to maintain.

I’ve been using Evernote since 2014, so sad to see it go. It was very versatile and I will miss it.

This hurts because I really do love Evernote. I use it heavily. But, this year, my school has gone 1:1 with computers and is heavily focused on the OneNote ecosystem. I'm also the happy owner of a MacBook Pro (about 6 years old) and a user of DropBox, so I have experimented with those offerings as well. Evernote's web clipper is amazing. I also use Evernote to organize show notes for my KZbin channel. I have also used its web-hosting capabilities to host a some of the more extensive bibliographies I have used for KZbin videos that exceed the length available in the description. But I agree. Evernote is limited. I was disappointed that the improvements were cosmetic rather than functional. I want handwriting on the page like OneNote. I can live with it not having the education features like OneNote. I can't use it for that purpose anyway where I work. But the math functions, the text formatting, the handwriting, the handwriting recognition, the ease of inserting graphics, and such are all missing in Evernote. Evernote is resting on its laurels.

Yep, I think you are better off in OneNote, How do you find their web clipper?
@WaskiSquirrel
@WaskiSquirrel 5 жыл бұрын
OneNote's web clipper is still very limited. It does not put material into notebooks automatically. You have to do that later. The pages I clip seem to be formatted all right, but webclipper is still a major strength of Evernote. I also like that Evernote pages can be webpages. But OneNote is otherwise better.

Steve - I've had a problem with OneNote web clipper and been unable to get Microsoft to address the issue. I have a string of comments on a Microsoft website that summarizes the issue in detail that I can provide if you are interested.

The warning flag for me was when Evernote suddenly limited me to 2 devices BUT failed to address most of the valuable feedback from its core long term user base. Since then they appear to have lost strategic direction, and shown almost no innovation over the last few years - a case of moving the deck chairs around on the Titanic? They need to be working closely with their core users to update the product - which is starting to feel really dated. And a ‘refreshed’ logo isn’t going to change that. But I fear it is already too late. I have hardly added any new notes to Evernote over the last couple of years, now using it solely for legacy reference data. Meanwhile I am testing out Notion, Bear, Keep & OneNote - with a view to biting the bullet and cutting & pasting all my data from Evernote. Could Evernote still win me back ? Absolutely. Will they? Based on how little the latest refresh moved Evernote forward - not a hope in h#ll. But I would love to be proved wrong !

I have some issues with Evernote and other note applications, it is privacy. When I take sensitive notes, I shoot myself an email using Proton Mail. Non sensitive notes I use Evernote.

Like the concept of the webinar summary! Please continue with it. How do we access the full webinar session? Evernote's lack of innovation the past few years is a concern. Will look into Notion. If it can allow access to notes while offline, it may be an alternative for me. The ability to access notes offline in Evernote has been one of the reasons why I haven't moved to other apps.

As a long-time premium Evernote user, I switched to Google Docs earlier this year because of the signs of leadership instability and lack of significant development beyond their brand. It was painful - but a good exercise to review my digital brain to keep only what matters most. I do miss the innovative web-clipper, but it's not so hard to cut and paste into a Google Doc or Keep - and while Evernote had good search, nothing compares to Google which I already use as premium customer. It's far more flexible and available on all of my devices, platforms and OS - and has a much longer runway as far as I can tell...
