The worst advice anyone can tell you is to 'act your age'. After a certain point, that usually just means 'be boring' and end up drooling in a nursing home. My mom bought a crazy expensive oboe and learned to play it after age 60 and will be performing the first oboe part in Dvorak's New World Symphony next week. Telling yourself you can't learn anything new is dangerous!

What a cool vid. I now, at age 48, have Tendonitis and the beginnings of Arthritis, and I've been trying different ways to relieve my uncomfortable feeling when playing. My fingers (index mainly) locks up and I have to switch to the others toward the end of songs. I DO play with my wrist very bent and I use a wrist splint, which helps w/relief. I don't use my middle finger for poppin (the angle and stuff...very cool). Now I do. Thanks so much.Rock on brother!!!

I use the 'thumb-down' 'thumb-up' 'index-pluck' 'middle-pluck' technique by Victor Wooten.You can obviously use different combinations like 'Thumb- down' 'index-pluck' 'middle-pluck' OR 'thumb-down' 'thumb-up' 'index-pluck' etc.Then incorporate left hand hammer-ons as you go.This technique is great if you wanna play from basic slap to some seriously advanced and complex rhythmic slap patterns but with ease.It doesn't limit you whatsoever.It's the ultimate technique for slap bass.I don't think there's anything beyond this.Trust me.😄 Whatever technique you use,groove.

The middle finger pop has ALWAYS seemed more natural to me, from my very beginning on bass. I had to work to build up the techniques and calluses on the first finger.
@poser_disposer
@poser_disposer 8 жыл бұрын
Using your ring/middle finger for double popping instead of your index/middle is a bit of a double edged sword, because although you're right in that the motion is more fluid because of the turning axis of the wrist, that finger is on a separate set of muscles so it takes longer to build strength in that finger. I don't play slap much anymore, I only did a little bit of slap when I first started, but I was more interested in mastering tremolo picking with 3 fingers and ended up nixing my thumb as a picking mechanism because of the style of music I play. Now that I have put myself in this comfort zone of picking however it would be fun to break that, this technique appeals a lot to me now that I have built a lot of strength in my ring finger tremolo picking. When I did play a bit of slap I used to try and use my middle and index, but now I see why I wasn't satisfied with the comfort/speed I was building over time.

Rethink Your Approach i.e. When using only one finger, always use the pinky (New Harmonious Name: Tremolator) it's the strongest of fingers and opens the brain the most.... also when using full hand; iniciate your approach (old name: attack) with The Tremolator going towards The Thumb... think of it as climbing weak branches of a Tree - if you grab the branch focusing your grip around Index finger, the branch will break, rip even or snag. However once You start Climbing by focusing Your Grip around The Strongest Tremolator, then the Branches start Bending instead of breaking... same goes for everyday use from anythin to everything including Martial Arts always commence Your Grip at The Tremolator - this way You will use the least ammount of Energy whilst achieving Superhuman Speeds and Efficiency ...and buy a lefthanded Instrument as well... Brush Your Teeth withYour Left Hand grasping Your Toothbrush from The Tremolator use Thou Tremolation.... Look at Life's Tasks like Screws; What You Screw One Direction, You'll have to Unscrew the Other Way Around...back to Your Life's Beginning Go and Cover Everything and Anything..... Once You lose Your Edge simply balance it out by picking up Your Lefthanded Guitar. Take Note Relax & Keep Track. Eventually Your Lefthand won't cover Your Holes no More, it is at that Moment, that You'll have to use it for Your Breakthru to New Territories.... after that play with your Feet and keep in Mind that The Heel is actually a Multitude of Micro-fingers... After that You Can play using Your Genitalia...think happy Thaughts & You'll smell of Bubblegum or Popcorn....Sing with Inhaling rather than exhaling, Inhaling Singing will repair Your Chi... eventually You will Levitate ...use Your Genital Voice and never stop Dancing .....You Dance as You Fuck - QOTSA .... Youth Returns...Eyes are used for Hearing in Nature's Aphex Predators (Snow Owl)... Eyes are so that You See The Color of Your Tone ....use Lipps instead of Teeth for Picking..... step away from Your Instrument and play Air Guitar... Notice how Your Strings Interact wit Your Air Technique.... When You Run out of Notation to choose, it's Time to Awaken and start Releasing every Note You've ever reached for... You'll See You've been clinging on to them for Eternities Unend ;) Time To ÜberHarmonate Thou SubBoom ....Use Your Highest Strings to manipulate Your Lows .... Harmonize Your Lows till Crescendo o' Harmonious Highs is Pushed beyond The Multiverse-Edge... Play Forwards and Reverse (like tapedeck)... Make Time Travel Backwards right or left back to Ye (Your-plural-Shiva) Palms (like ellectromagnet).... remember how pickups work... as string ellectrons have more distance from the magnet, sound travels faster and louder... same goes for your Hand.... fully approached You Mute ....oh Yeah, one Daily task is Walking... do that the same way Grasp Your Step iniciating with Your Tremolators... :) Think Pink Sink The Pink - It's on The Pressure - AC/DC It's a Fine Line; The One You Gotta Cross To Get You Anywhere - Rancid

If I say Jump You go High without asking... Your Index is most likely your inicial finger of four fingered attack plus thumb... your aattack sequence goes from the index towards the pinky.... turn it arround and you'll play much more relaxed.... the pinky functions like Flaps on Wings....without Flaps Airplane cannot take off....quick test; tap all 5 of your fingers as ellegantly as you can.... start with your pinky, then ring, fuck and index then thumb... other way arround is too clumsy ...it's not only impolite to point fingers (index) it's kind of retardedly mongloid too.... use your pinky for ballance and you won't tire your brain no more... the shere velocity and controll over force will increase if you turn your hand into a claw with the pinky as most powerful and your index for fine tuning on note pitch... maybe I'll show you in video someday :) allways remeber; Succeed first, then try to explain ...other way around you'll summon too much static and opposition to ever breakthrough

I don't doubt your abilities and talents, but the nonsense index finger thing is disproved by the index finger doing that exact movement when you incorporate the two finger popping technique. It is just more of a natural instinct to use the middle finger to pop. They both work equally for that technique, the middle finger is longer so it just works instinctively. Even when you were demonstrating the index finger pivot thing, it doesn't really make sense, or any valid point. It's not your idea though, you were shown it, so not blaming you. I use the same technique, the middle first, then index for two/second.

From my experience I know I'm not the only one who found themselves in this position. I spent years working on slap techniques and now find that slap bass is pretty much never called for. (I guess it's out of fashion!) The time I invested in slapping would have served me much better if I'd put it into much more fundamental technique or theoretical exercises. This stuff is just icing, icing that not many people are into these days.
