I hate when people say art doesn't take you anywhere, you will be unemployed, there's no future in it or the one I hate the most: "arts are for dummies/dumb people" Oh my God how I hate when people say that, if arts didn't exist there would be no Hollywood, there would be no music, no photography, no colors even. Everything would just be more dull. Think about it

I agree with everything you said but you don’t need a degree to work in that field. It’s better to get work experience in that field rather than learning useless theory at a university and wasting a lot of time and money doing it.

@@livinlife123 Everybody tells me that MIT, medicine, law or finance/business gives you the most money or at least you will at some point be employed somewhere. If everybody tells you that...well there must be some truth behind it. An art degree in not necessarily useless, but you really need to be very talented and stand out to make a lot of money, but that also depends on what type of art degree. In general a degree in art it's not needed. A lot of actors, singers don't have an art degree. And graphic designers are needed for apps or websites. That's actually not that bad. I once read that some dude sold his design for some millions, so 🤷‍♀️ In general ask yourselves: what do you want? Are you happy doing what you love and for maybe an average pay ( or who knows, maybe you make millions ;) ). Or do you want to travel, have expensive hobbies etc., with a job that you can accept and pays enough.

I came here after the 5th emotional breakdown I've had this year (alone) because of my major. I'm just so miserable. when you said you even majored in accounting I was like "HELLO???" BC I'M MAJORING IN ACCOUNTING RN AND LIFE IS SO EMPTY HAHAHA no but seriously thank you for this video. I've always been so lost. growing up while being passionate about art, I've always heard people in my life telling me to "be practical" and "focus on getting a real job," which, yes of course I want to be practical, but I also don't want to spend my entire professional career feeling like a cold, empty shell of a human. idk. your words are very encouraging and I feel like I can wholeheartedly make the decision to switch my major without regretting it later in life. it's so scary out here fr I hate being an adult lmao

Your video popped up in the best timing. I just realized that I wasn’t happy taking classes in the STEM majors and the only one I’m interested in was psychology. But even that, I couldn’t see myself doing anything with that degree. I’ve always liked the arts but I was too scared to pursue it and thought if a degree in arts is even worth it. I’ve come to realize exactly what you said, if I’m going to work for the rest of my life, I might as well work in something I enjoy. Your point about college being the foundation for experiences and discovery about ourselves also really struck me. I struggled whether I should learn by myself or get a degree but I definitely can learn to grow and understand myself better if I take classes in an environment where it is encouraged to explore what you like. Thank you for speaking your mind and sharing this video with us!

I've been struggling all my life with what I want to be, with who I am. Only now, at 23 years old and applying for college, that I've realized what I wanted all along which is Multimedia arts but everyone around kept telling me it wasn't good for my future, that I would fall in unemployment, at the time in high school I was too shy and too afraid to express myself so I went to the study they wanted me in. But now I finally decided that's what I want to do and nothing and no one will stop me because, and I love this quote, "I prefer getting shit for what I love than for what I hate". ❤️❤️

I needed this video since I’ve been doing art since forever as well, I’m currently a high school junior and what my mom says is that I should major in something else. Honestly, I told her I wanted to major in criminology yet I know art simply something I’ve always wanted. Over the years, I haven’t been doing much art due to lack of motivation and whenever I draw I simply don’t feel like I’m expressing myself at all. I’m not sure how to explain it, but to put it in short words it’s like an art block that’s been going on for 2 yrs now. Any advice you could give when it comes to improving and finding the rhythm again?

Hey, thanks for your comment! I recently posted a video on some ways I stay motivated, so maybe that video could help you too. I totally get where you're coming from when you say you have been doing art for as long as you can remember. One of the main things I did to get back into doing art seriously as a career was that I started surrounding myself with those who already are succeeding in the creative field - anything from facebook groups, youtube videos, blogs, podcasts, etc. It also takes A LOT of self discipline to push yourself. I know it can be discouraging having your family and friends around you suggest you do something else, but they don't know you like you know yourself. I guess you really have to really self evaluate where you want to take your future and do what's best for you despite what others say. Often times other peoples opinions and judgment blocks your vision. Just start creating again - the longer you wait, the less you'll feel like doing it (again, it takes a lot of self discipline) but you could always do art challenges, something small everyday, or just joining a facebook group where you can ask for ideas, suggestions, and pitch in to people's comments. Best of luck to you, I hope I answered your question :)

@camrynh
@camrynh 4 жыл бұрын
mina hey The biggest negative that every professor has stated is that a lot of jobs in this field aren’t very stable on top of a lot of jobs being highly competitive. All of my professors have worked for some major companies (like Fossil and The Richards Group) and a lot of them only worked there for a few years before going to different jobs. That ,to me personally, doesn’t sound appealing. (I don’t know if instability is still true in today’s times, I wouldn’t know I’m not a working professional so I can’t validate that information that’s just what they tell us) I also just had a negative professor who I think liked to scare us by saying that in my state there isn’t many jobs for designers and that if we really want good work we have to go to places like California and New York, which isn’t an option for me as I’m married and my husband has a stable job here and I’m not leaving that and wouldn’t ask him too either.... Another they like to mention is that you will inevitably be stuck with jobs that you hate and that happens more than jobs that are super exciting but you have to go FIND the work that you enjoy.... HOWEVER having said that..that comes with any job field you work in, you have to find the work you want to do 🤷🏼‍♀️ I think I just struggle with burn out when I comes to art which really sucks but that’s a personal issue I struggle with. I don’t want to discourage anyone from taking some classes, I say do it if it’s something you think you’re really interested in because you may freaking love the heck out of it and be damn good and book a ton of jobs. Don’t let negatives outweigh anything if you’re really interested in this. There will ALWAYS be negative in every single job you work no matter what field you’re working in. You just have to find something where the work you do and love outweighs any potential negatives that you may come across. Good luck!

When I graduated high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do and when people asked me, I always said business to get people off my back. Business runs in my family and my sister graduated with international business. I always feel like I have to live up to certain expectations which is exhausting. I’m getting my associates next year and as of right now, I’ve been working towards marketing. I keep going back and forth between marketing and graphic design. I honestly don’t know if I’ll like marketing and that scares me. paused pretty early on in the video to state my thoughts! first off~ I can totally relate to the describe me in one word thing of either artistic or creative, I was called the latter the most! - and so, yea! I was already interested in and passionate about art but the fact that others thought so as well... it made me happy that they acknowledged it! as of yet, I'm still a high school student, but I'm late into high school and close to graduation meaning I'm definitely at a point in time where I have to think about my options in terms of what university I'm going to and what to major in... and to be honest, it's been quite difficult... T^T see, here's the thing; primary school to early high school time... I thought I had it all figured out. I had a role model, one solid career choice and a university choice set in stone, and no matter how much anybody tried to change my mind- well, it didn't work. I genuinely wanted to be an architect. I liked drawing, and I liked buildings, at the time I was probably thinking "well, isn't this perfect?" and so I thought that I had all it took. but then... reality hit me like a brick falling from the rooftop of a 10 story building, while I was just standing there absolutely dumbfounded... so now I'm left with an uncertain future, multiple paths filled with question marks, stress, overthinking, and not to mention mental and emotional unavailability, all piling up onto one-another... and so now I'm only certain about very few things, and even then I question and overthink those as well. I've got multiple major options that could lead to multiple career choices ranging from graphic design to interior design to fashion design to even something to do with creative writing!? and I'm just... I don't know anymore. I feel lost... mental and emotional unavailability really can be an understatement at times... * *sigh...* * :c

I wanted to become a veterinarian .. family was proud of me for choosing that route .. but suddenly all of that hope and desire changed .. lost all faith lol .. had to discover myself again and figure out what is it truly i want to spend my life doing 😁. The answer is Art / writing / film , etc i can go on and on . I recently just got accepted to a university and ive been thinking about going for graphic design or like you said creative writing . Im just as lost as you feel right now :/ .. like i really dont want to choose something thats gonna waste my time .. but i know for a fact i want to take classes and major in something that i love / feel i can express myself with and yet STILL make a living off it 💰. But my advice is literally sit with yourself and god .. figure out what your passion is . And what MAJOR can support that . Take classes that builds up the skillss for that major . It was a good reminder and motivation for me to keep on moving forward. Sometimes we tend to forget what we are going for in life career-wise that sometimes we need this type of reminder. I really thank you for this. I am an art major with a minor in marketing and it has been a long time since I've studied because I took a break due to covid. So because of this, I forgot what I was studying for. Everyone has weaknesses and struggles. Mine is to fluently communicate with people. I have the tendency to not communicate effectively to a person or a big audience, but I know that I have to practice more to become better at it. Nothing is easy in this life. Doing hard work will eventually pay off. Once again, thanks for the good message. Also, I just subscribed :D. Keep up the good videos!

I'm currently in my senior year in highschool and I'm graduating in no time. I plan to attend community college. (This way I'll be able to think and see if I really wanna apply to a 4-year college or university after a few years in community college) I already signed up online and I'm doing my orientation for it now. I picked Graphic Design as my main major. I am not the most talented artist. But I think it's the right choice for me because this major doesn't sound as stressful as the other options. I hope I won't regret choosing this over the others. I remember signing up online. I wanted to cry so much. I felt so pressured that just by looking at the other possible majors available, it made me feel like I'm wasting my time if I pick this or that. This is because this major could be the most appropriate option, or that could be the one. It was like a harsh slap into my face that this is reality, and here comes nothing. I'm 18 this year, there's no turning back. I thought, "You can choose your major now and apply to a 2-year college or take a year off and work." So, I thought I could do a challenge-both at the same time! I already have my goals all set! I'm going to do this! I'm looking to see what my decision is, so walk me through. There's a side of me where I feel scared and anxious just thinking about my future plans, like applying to college and stuff. BUT! There's also this other side of me that gets excited and thrilled about the idea of being an adult and returning to college/work and such. So I'm feeling overwhelmed by all of my actions rn, like, "Am I really gonna be okay? Is picking Graphic Design (my "comfort" subject) the best choice?" I know that it doesn't have to be "The best" choice for now, i have plenty of time to discover what I wanna do with my life but I just have this feeling that if I don't try anything after highschool, im probably gonna have a hard time picking up my motivation as I grow older, or I might regret things if I didn't try them before. I don't want to think about ride thoughts. I can say that I'm not really good at anything lol. But keep saying they liked my arts, my art teacher's son even picked my project over the whole class' projects. So I'm kinda pretty confident about this. But I gotta say, I am currently in Virtual Enterprise class and it's a class where I should be communicating and have basic skills about business and that's just not my thing. They always say that ask them if you have questions but ike the thing is, im soooo way behind that it's gotten embarrassing to even ask about every little thing all the time so I tend to get ignored, that alone tells me a lot about what my strength and weaknesses are. Coz I'd rather be around people who share the same thing that I like, which is art, instead of being in an environment where I feel left out. I hope that makes sense. Tmi: I actually like dancing and singing, i like kpop too and being a kpop idol was once my dream but I know that my family won't support me. (And also I feel like it's too late to go into training and such to become an Idol.) I also once dreamed of becoming a flight attendant, because I like to travel, (even though I don't go out a lot, lol the irony) and because of that I also had a liking about planes and sky. I used to dream of becoming a pilot.

That’s exactly that I have been through right now. It’s really hard for me to make the decision for my major and my future career. As a international college student in US, my life is really hard in here. I have been through a lot in mentally, physically. I want to take Art major but I feel like everything is stopping me or I just don’t feel right taking the Art major. I have met with my counselors and we discussed about it but it didn’t work out. What I really need right now is someone who can help me out with this situation.

I’ve known that I wanted a job in visual arts for three years now, and now that I’m a sophomore in high school, I feel like it’s time I start thinking about what specifically I want to do. I struggle with the thought that I’m not improving fast enough, or that I’ll be wasting my time and money doing this. This is my dream, I want to create things that will inspire people. And I just don’t want to lose that dream. I know I’m talented, but sometimes it feels like it’s not enough.

But on the bright side, I guess I’m lucky, because my family has always supported my creative endeavors and I’m thankful for that. It’s just my own inner critic that’s the issue. Everyone has been very excited about going to school for art and has given me tools to grow as an artist. I’m so glad they did, because I love art now, it’s my passion.

I am in class 8 finding my career came across this video I kinda feel relatable my mother thinks it won't reach me anywhere my father was like I am not sure but he said I can support you but am sure about choosing art major I am stuck in that question for days so whenever I am free I look into every single things in internet I don't wanna be a accountant or doctor I don't like these things even it has high salary but I am not sure because even though I am creative and into arts I suck at drawing that is also taking me aback but I have to say I have a rich imagination of drawings in my mind can't express it because I can't draw like that it would make sad but next day start drawing again If I keep going to comment maybe I will tell you my story

Stem subjects have never been my strong suit either, when I hear about people majoring in maths or science I’m so glad I didn’t do that the fact that there is a degree that allows me to work on art and computers?yes please!

If people wanna go to college for art I suggest just don’t go to college self learn art and build up your portfolio youll do better with a art career attempting through trial and error rather than going to four years of college and not havin many job prospects at the end. Dont be a follower and just go to college especially if u can only do art for a living skip college and start your own projects now. F what ur parents say its your debt u gonna end up having to pay off

Hello, I would like to ask a question here. Which one is better, going to community college for 2 years first and then, transfer to university for the rest 2 years or going directly to the 4- year- university?
