The new Sony FE PZ 16-35 F4 G lens is the smallest F4 wide angle zoom with power zoom on the market right now... but thats not all it has to offer! With updated focus, zoom, aperture ring and more, this lens has a lot to consider when buying a full frame wide angle lens! But how does it compare to the Tamron, G Master, or Zeiss??

This is probably the most useful video i've seen while contemplating which 16-35mm lens to buy. I'd originally homes in on the new Sigma 16-28 2.8, but then decided I'd go the whole hog for the Sony 16-35 F2.8 GM, the 'gold standard'. But do I really want to pay that much, it's big and heavy. I think this video has moved my choice to the Sony 16-35 PZ. The image quality, most important feature for me, is first class. The filter size fit the big range of filters I already have (GM is 82mm thread so I'd need to change them all - an expensive step). And F4 is actually find for me, on a Sony sensor and mainly for landscapes. Thank you, really useful.

Agree with all your points! I also own the Tamron and , while the images it produces are fine, I just don't enjoy shooting with it and also find the focal range limiting,. As an A7C owner, I am now interested in this new 16-35 lens for its compact form factor but your "pixel peeping" results has made it a real contender for my Sony dollars. I could see this pairing very nicely with the Tamron 28-200 as a lightweight travel combo with a fast prime thrown in for low light situations. I may have to let go of my Tamron 17-28 after all! Good review!

Late to this game but thanks for the video! I just picked up the PZ 16-35 and it's AWESOME! What a fun lens! I had a 16-35 f2.8 in my Canon DSLR days and yes it was great but only used when I 'had' to usually opting for something smaller and lighter for daily carry. This Sony lens is great in that way. It stays on the body and goes everywhere. Great range and IQ is just great! Feels like this one will be with me a long time.

Definitely interested, the control of depth of field is the attraction to me. I use a 16/70 F4 as my lowlight indoor lense, I have lower stop primes but they lack depth of field... FWIW. Small formfactor and low weight is important too!

You mean for the video example? I recorded some ambient sounds of the water and wind with a field recorder and then mixed it with the live sounds I got on camera any time there was something important like a footstep, good going up, or a big wave on screen. But the underlying layer of water, wind and birds really helped too. Going to do that more often now.

This looks like a perfect vlogging lens. Especially for me as a rock climber when I want to film a boulder I am doing but there is very limited space to place the tripod. Opening up to 16mm would really make it easy. Being at F4 could almost eliminate the need for an nd filter in many situations as well, which just makes life simpler. Gonna wait for a price drop and see if Tamron is ready to launch their G2 version of the 17-28!

You're saying it's an advantage to get forced down to F4 over stopping down on a faster lens for some reason? For shooting sports I wouldn't bother with an ND, not that there is much hope to knock out a background an F4 anyway (personal preference for sports to have a higher shutter speed).

honestly, after I got the 90mm macro, I sorta stopped using my 24-105 and would really consider switching that zoom lens out for this new one. don't think I have a reason to use any focal length between 35 and 90mm anymore and the small additional reach to 105 is a bit moot.

Felt really happy with Sony's job on their G lens lineup, probably since 24-105mm G. Super sharp, good quality and bunch of the newest technology they use on their new products. Before this 16-35 launched, I was really happy with the 20mm G which have a great view of vlog and the wide f1.8 makes me feel happy. But I'm now reaaaaally considering to get this new 1635 G to replace my 20mm G which also provide a good quality of image and great view of vlog, but come additionally with the PZ and the flexibility by the zoom, and the most important the compact size and weight! What I found is just a bit bigger than the 20mm G.
@F1REBEARD
@F1REBEARD 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm in the same boat, but I'm thinking the opposite, to keep my 20 1.8G because of that aperture, closer focusing distance and sharpness. I can always use clear image zoom when I'm filming to give it a 1,5x extra reach without any quality loss (my down button is a shortcut to the zoom), I also have the crop mode on my a7c, so my 20mm is now either a 30mm or 45mm. But I can see that this new PZ is appealing to many people 👌

I have the GM, the PZ would be really useful for gimbal work. I also like to put my gimbal on a tripod and control wirelessly with an xbox controller, I'd be able to zoom in and out and aim the camera which could be super handy. I don't think I'd give up my 2.8 though so I might get both, but that seems excessive as I also have the 35mm 1.4 gm.

Great video and really nice footage. You were bang on with everything except when it came to Tamron's autofocus. It's focus by wire which, if you're shooting video, is seriously inferior to Sony's focus system. Manual focus isn't linear and hard to nail and the auto focus isn't as good. So if you are looking at using a lens mainly for video then it should be a no brainer to pick up the Sony for a few hundred bucks extra (at least IMHO). The next question is whether or not to pick up the new Sigma 16-28 which looks to have them all beat (except for maybe the weather sealing dept.) Cheers!

I feel like if they were to update the GM with some of these new features… they would make a killing. The new focus and zoom motors would allow them to make it a bit smaller and lighter I think. Or at very least, lighter. The size might be more to do with the f2.8 than the motors. Regardless. I’d love to see their whole GM line get the newest tech.

Honestly great video! I've got the Sony 16-35 GM 2.8 and really love the size factor of this, 2.8 is nice, but having an a7SIII and the a7IV as you said the low light issue really isn't an issue losing 1 stop of light. My question is, which would you go for and if you the GM would you sell it for this from the tests you've done?

@@onejah8151 he never responded though I can update you in my own experience. I'll still choose the GMs for their 2.8 and their great IQ. I still own the 16-35 GM. I also had the 20mm f1.8 though I missed the different focal ranges of having the 16-35. So I sold it and never looked back. Still feel the same today. If size is important than the f4 is probably a better investment. And you can probably get away with it even in low light for the most part. Though I still like having the f2.8 as I do a lot of talking head content and filming in the evenings.

Hey! Fellow Victorian here! I was trying to decide on a wider lens for weddings this summer. I was trying to decide if I really need anything wider than 24mm but I think this looks great for venue shots! I'll probably go with this one! Thanks!

If you already own the 16-35GM but the weight weighs you down, but you care for the low light capabilities for interior shots of say a church in europe (where you can’t use flash nor a tripod), would you go with this new f4 and hope to compensate using topaz plugins for those noisy shots, or would you recommend me the 20mm f1.8 G ? Thanks

Just bought the lens, excited to use it...the lens hood, shouldn't it click lock when you turn it or is mine defective? I have it lined up and when I turn it all the way it doesn't click-lock like all my other lens hoods seem to do which makes me wonder if I have a defective hood or lens hood mount. It falls off easy when I put it in the bag. Just curious if this is normal, design flaw or just plain defective and I need to have Sony replace.

Great video as always Dunna. I just started getting more serious about photography and video, so my first lens for the Sony A7iv was the Sigma 24 - 70mm Art. I was sure the next one would be the Sigma 14 - 24mm Art, and while those lenses are great, man are they heavy! I will seriously be considering this new Sony 16 - 35mm as my second lens. Love the weight and size and the performance looks great. Also, congrats on the move to Victoria. I will be visiting there mid May for a friends wedding and I'm so excited to get out and take some photos and videos while I'm there, such a beautiful place.

This is the review we needed! Thanks for pixel-peeping for us haha. Now I am having a difficult time choosing between the Tamron 17-28 , 16-35 G and the 24 f/1.4 GM! I do travel photo (i.e., landscape, astro, portrait) and 24mm GM seems to give me the “Wow factor” where as the Tamron 17-28 does not. I think having that “Wow factor” is important as a photographer. Tough choices!!

Since the a7iv crops so much in 4K/60, Active Stab and lens breathing I recently bought the Sigma 14-24 f2.8 (I already have the 24-70 Sigma) for filming weddings. Having 2nd thoughts after Saturday’s wedding. The Sigma is very heavy, I can’t get it to balance on any of my gimbals and you can’t use a variable ND. I think I’m going to preorder the Sony. I wish it had OSS!!!

Great review, thank you. I am a new videographer and I can’t decide between the F4 and F2.8 in the GM. My only concern is the low light situations as I will be using the lense with my sony AS7 and I am afraid F4 won’t be enough. I mostly shot the city at night ( street, monuments, events, cars,…) and there is usually some light going on. On the other hand I find the GM too heavy with my gimbal and so impractical. Have you used it at night? Is the footage good? Which lense do you recommend for night photography? Thank you in advance.

Have you taken a look at the Sigma 16-28 f2.8? It might be the happy medium you're looking for. F2.8 but much smaller than the GM, and still great quality. Check that one out → kzbin.info/www/bejne/m17KfHiNaZ2Ef5o That said, I haven't used the F4 at night but I have struggled to shoot f4 with other lenses at night. It's useable but not ideal is what I would say.

I’m so conflicted. Been looking at the Tamron as a possible vlogging lens for my A7C but this looks so enticing. Especially cause the power zoom means I can connect a Bluetooth controller and zoom and vlog with 1 hand (if I get a Bluetooth remote/tripod with it like the one smallrig makes). I’m not in the financial position to order either one right now but I’ll have to do some more research and see if the Sony is the right choice. I was worried about losing that stop of light but like you said “Sony full frame cameras have amazing low light performance” and the A7C is no different.

Just sold me tamron for this mainly for two reasons: 1) the size because I use a gimbal very often and this is awesome as I don’t have the touch the camera for the zoom therefore it messing with the balance, and 2) the extra reach. The tamron was good but I just feel I could do more with the lens. 2.8 is nice but not 100% necessary for my workflow

Hey, your probably already got something planned but could you compare this to the new sigma 16-28mm 2.8? That would be awesome. Planning on getting a wide angle and there's too much choice between this, a used 16-35mm GM and the new sigma. I mostly do Landscape, general outdoors video and a bit of light astro. If you ever see this and reply that would be sweet but anyone else who wants to chip their opinion would be appreciated.

I think because I also have the 16-35 f2.8 I would still pick my 20mm… but if I didn’t have that lens, then the 16-35 f4 would be a solid way to get that range covered.

How would this F4 lens perform when shooting (without a tripod) inside cathedrals, bridges at sunset and inside restaurants? I can't decide between this or the new Sigma 16-28 f2.8. I'm only concern on the 16mm focal length, I would love for Sony to just release a 16mm ultra wide prime lens, but that won't probably happen in the near future.
