@@Stroggoii Thing is, capitalism committing suicide and turning into neo-feudalism is something leftists like myself keep warning will happen just due to its incredibly warped and unrealistic ideological structure. Consumerism is an outgrowth of the capitalist mantra of infinite growth, and capitalism funnels all the resources into ever-fewer hands simply by its operation; wealth under capitalism snowballs, and in a finite space with finite (not even scarce -- just finite) resources, that's going to end up taking those resources from those on the bottom to give to those on the top. This will eventually cause the collapse of capitalism and a return to feudalism, but the process is still a function of capitalism, and the things that prevent that from happening are likewise still external to capitalism itself.

only the number of new cards vs old cards should affect that, not the total number of decks. if they made 10 precons all with the same number of new vs old cards, the amount of design effort *per deck* is approximately the same (assuming the decks are each about equal in power level), and therefore the design effort-levels would not vary much between each deck.

The mana base seems a little more compromised than "traditional" commander decks (even though those aren't exactly great they usually include at least a couple of untapped duals whereas these just have command tower) but other than that I'm pretty impressed. IDK why WotC seems to have such a good grasp of how to build a decent out-of-the-box commander deck, but prints bull crap like Planeswalker decks and Intro Packs to introduce players to Standard. Maybe the fact that it's a singleton format helps? A big problem with 60 card introductory decks is that they rarely include play sets of important cards and that problem simply doesn't exist for Commander...
@martenyus
@martenyus 4 жыл бұрын
i think that new player want to play with bunch of different cards and try new things. if the decks contain only play sets, there is no room for upgrade or new ideas with the deck. i think that for new players its not about winning and best play possible but about experience.
@adamgalloy9371
@adamgalloy9371 4 жыл бұрын
@@martenyus That is a good point. I agree that there should be a middle ground between giving a new player a deck that has room to grow and giving someone a deck that is competitive out-of-the-box but I think the scale is tipped too far towards the earlier and not the later. From my experiences at least, new players aren't exactly having fun if they feel that their opponents deck is insurmountable no matter what they do with theirs and it reinforces the stereotype that the game is all about how much money you spend on the deck. In addition, making the deck a hodge podge of cards with no real direction certainly adds room for growth, but its not exactly a great example of how to build an exciting and functional deck. If you are going to make pre-con decks for players shouldn't they demonstrate a good model for deck-building? I think some of the key commons/uncommons of the deck should at least be in playsets to give the deck more direction/consistency without making the deck a "finished" product.

While I usually agree with you on WOTC's economics, these decks don't cost as much to make as the Ikoria decks did. Those new cards do take resources to produce. They take valuable time and labor, even if the result always seems to include some duds and some pushed cards. While I doubt that the entire price difference is due to those costs, some price difference is justified. From a customer perspective we may prefer this style, but I do think you underplay a very real difference.

I bought the Sneak Attack one (love me some tribal decks) and was utterly disappointed - they didn't include the Blue/Black tokens for Oona and instead only gave a lot of the Black ones :< Other than that, really nice deck with many cards I would for sure buy at one point or another if this wasn't printed.

I wish stores around here did a two-for-one deal. The price for these is truly excellent! Around here they're more the equivalent of 27 dollars, but as the Ikoria decks cost about 55 dollars each, I'm not complaining. I'd love to see Wizards of the Coast make more decks at this quality and above in the future at the same price. I actually have a great proposition for them: cut the way-too-small deck box and the paper life counter, especially the expensive-to-print foil cards, oversized card and heck, the lands, and make sure the rest of the cards are solid, and sell the deck at half the price! Everybody wins! Okay, they should obviously have key pieces to be able to play out-of-the-box, but if I'm going to have to pay 25 dollars for cardboard, I'd prefer that very cardboard being specific cards that enhance the playing experience. I don't care about foils. I enjoy the game and want to be able to play it. A solid video, and it's nice to see I'm not the only one pleased to be able to buy two commander decks for the price of one.

I would normally agree that wizards could make the products cheaper, specially when it comes to reprint-sets, but when new cards ought to be created is't there a cost associated with the work it takes to create them? And I could totally side with wizards there... but they usually don't pay extra to their employees for their extra work.

I disagree on the price point issue. I can imagine that the "regular" preconstructed commander decks do cost more to produce. Not to print, but to design. All the new cards that were designed needed development time from R&D.

What you fail to say in your value of the deck is you can only sell these cards for a fraction of the price, meaning if the deck has $60 in value, you can expect to only receive 50% of that value, but still is more than the price of the decks. This is a great plus.
@endlessorbaggins8223
@endlessorbaggins8223 4 жыл бұрын
I think that when doing expected "value" video the creators should effectively base their numbers on what the secondary market would offer you for these cards...and not on what the secondary market is asking you for these cards. Also, cards from Shadowmoor like Sygg and Oona have higher price because of scarcity. They will drop hard. I would say that if you pay 20$ for these decks, in 2-3 months you would want to sell the singles and they would not offer you more than 20$. It is beautiful to see a 20$ precon before release print to demand product with 90$ worth of what an LGS would sell you the single. But, that 90$ is far from the reality of what the product is worth after release.

Cost to produce a deck is the same for mtg for every deck. They don't make money off of the secondary market directly. They only nake money by limiting certain cards to increase demand for future releases. So they could make every commander deck $20.

Little known fact. Pringles are not actually "chips" and if you look at a can it will not say chips but instead "crisps." This is because chips are technically fried slices of potatoes where as pringles are made from taking the thrown out bits of potato mixing them with water and starch and then molding them into their signature magic card shape.

While I understand your point, I also think it could be seen as an opportunity to learn some english for your girlfirend. I'm french canadian. I have two daughters about 10 yo that don't speak english. Play Commander with them almost once a week for about 3 years and now they are able to read even not before seen cards on their own. The wording on the cards is often the same (Draw, until end of turn, enters the battlefield, etc) so in my opinion you don't need to be bilingual to be able to play MTG. Just need some effort to get used with the more currently used terms. Playing MTG as helped my daughters learned some bit of english and i'm proud of that.
@FuzzyShocker
@FuzzyShocker 4 жыл бұрын
@@endlessorbaggins8223 it's different. Probably your daughters already had a much better contact with english than we do (I'm from Brazil). Second, the game is already really complex to teach, but becomes even harder when you don't know what is written in the cards. And finally, it's probably easier to teach someone when they're 10 or less than someone with 35 and little to no knowledge in english. While we agree that learning a new language is important and would solve lots of problems, the issue is that some products can't be fully enjoyed by customers because a simple barrage that could be solved by the company making the game.
