Is it worth putting LED reversing lights in the MG ZS EV?

In this video I test if upgrading the reversing lights to LED make any difference. I'm finding the reversing lights are pretty poor on the MG ZS EV.

A top tip when reversing in the dark is to turn on the rear fog lights. With some vehicles, like the ZS, these are positioned lower down than the reversing lights and give a noticeable boost in visibility despite being red. A bit less useful but still worthwhile, can be to turn on the hazard flashers as well. Every little helps!

You could put a strip light under the bumper line as a reversing secondary. I imagine it would light up the area well while being discreet looking. You could even hide it from view.

Never relied on light emitting from reverse lights. My Qashqai has very good rear Camera. Most of the VW's I have had only have one reverse lamp on N/S and never had this problem.

I think the problem is that the bulbs are only 16W, reversing lights used to be 21W until recently. Is there a 21W equivalent sized bulb available ?

I'm very late to this, but I have a 2019 MG ZS myself, the petrol 1.0 version, I very rarely find the reverse lights being too weak, maybe because I make it a habit to switch on the rear fog lights whenever the headlights go on? I only put the rear fogs because they kinda look better when the light is on, the rear bottom feels like empty to me otherwise... but yeah thats probably why this hasn't been an issue for me

The reflector and size of the aperture seems inadequate. Needs re-designing and re-positioning lower as you say. The only advantage to LEDs are they will last forever. The tungsten version is guaranteed to blow a day before the car needs an MOT.

Don't touch any halogen bulb with hands! Also these LED are illegal in halogen lamp units. Depending on country you might get disqualified in TUV.

Yes. That helps a little, but its often too dirty.

You had already reached your decision before doing the test. You were unable to discern a difference in a real world test. The LED bulb did that with only 3 watt while to achieve the equivalent light from the incandescent bulb, W10W, used 10 watts, more than three times the energy. Incandescent builds are notoriously inefficient with most of the energy being dissipated as heat. You say the LED gets hot, but ignore the fact that the incandescent also gets hot.

similar shame on Zoe. The reversing light is a joke. It is very low, but only one very small light ... without the rear view camera, that would be a real problem. I was thinking about to add some IR LEDs in the rear bumper, that can be seen with the camera ... we will see. On my other cars I had and still own (Capri 1983) I changed the 21 watts to a 20 watts halogen bulp with the same socket. That runs much hotter, but we are not long enouigh in reverse gear, so that works. but in Zoe there is not enough space in the lamp housing for this type of bulp.

LED's are characterised by high efficiency and low heat output. I'm wondering if there really would be much risk of melting the plastic with a higher output LED?

Plenty of cases of people melting light fittings in cars. But then they use LED bulbs which are physically much larger and the build-in drivers run very hot.

@@GoGreenAutos , not with LED lamps as they remain cool to the touch. If MG only fit incandescent lamps as standard I wouldn’t ever buy one, it is pointless penny pinching.

@@johnkellett7797 the heat is still there, but it's on the other side. It's why you have heatsinks on led bulbs in OEM applications. And why idiots converting halogen lights to led's often don't understand why their lights don't work as well as they should.

The reflectors on the sides of the bumper could probably be remade into reversing lights. Maybe someone can make a kit for that...

The reverse lamps on the HS EV are literally useless - probably compounded by the tinted glass, it’s literally impossible to see out the back in the dark (eg country lane scenario).

Your comment made me laugh, cheap Chinese bulbs, arnt these ideal for a cheap Chinese car lol Great videos on the MG ZS ev, I nearly bought one a couple of years ago (Petrol) but ended up with a very nice MG GS instead, Very interesting on the rust topic, I will be looking for a used MG ZS ev in a couple of years so will have to keep an eye on the chassis condition, it reminds me of my 2007 Mazda MX5, it was only 6 years old but rusty as hell underneath ! you could have washed the car before starting. but also the replaced bulb light was cleaner due to touching the glass has removed the dirt. do you really have to take out the whole glass unit not an easy task in the rain in reverse for a few seconds not for some driver that take 5 minute to reverse in to a parking space

LED lights aren’t reflected as a normal lamp is. That’s why they don’t function well when swapped for incandescent bulbs. LED light lenses are clear with no patterning on the lamp cover. Reversing camera is what you need if rearward vision is a problem.
