That was very nice! Your dad must be very pleased. I once took an oak wardrobe (made during WW2) apart for a friend, it was upstairs in her house and we couldn't get it downstairs without dismantling it. She didn't want it so I used the wood to make a small folding table for another friend, and a dolls hooded rocking cradle for a woman to display one of her dolls. All from a utility oak wardrobe from the 40s. Waste not, want not. A few splinters of the oak were used to make the propellers for 2 WW1 bi-planes for young man who had some problems in his life. I never got to meet him, but apparently he liked them.

I pick up loads of old furniature from a site called Freecycle here in the UK. All for free. Old tables, beds, bookshelves, doors etc... An endless supply of free pine & quite a lot of oak. Occasionally teak & other hard woods. Take them apart & clean them up on the table/band saw. A bit of a sand & I have most of the wood I'll ever need (bar large construction timber or MDF/Ply sheets). My only headache is where to store it all. The odd sizes & shapes are always an inspiration for new projects.

Full disclosure: Mirka se t me the sander for free. But yes, it's superior to most entry level sanders. The dust collection system is the best feature IMO but also less vibration and effective sander.

Marie, you mention sanding one day, letting the dust settle, and finishing the next. I had thought you had an overhead air filter in your shop, wouldn't that do an adequate job of scrubbing dust in the air?
@DIYMontreal
@DIYMontreal Жыл бұрын
Great catch! The scrubber is temporarily removed as I'm trying to close up an exposed part of the ceiling with drywall. Even so, the scrubber does a good job in an hour or so but I still find some small dust will continue to settle. So I'll maybe try to wait 2-3 hours at least before finishing.

Bonjour Marie.

Good vid, nice build! I'm a little iffy on how you managed the corner gaps on the preexisting aprons, though. I'm not sure how I would have done it differently, short of replacing the aprons entirely, which would go against the whole notion of salvaging! 😅
@DIYMontreal

I actually considered removing the aprons completely but then the hardware would be visible. In the end, the solution doesn't have to be perfect, as long as it works for your needs and pleases your aesthetics 👌
