This Walnut Sculpted Desk was designed specifically for two of my favourite clients. The main request was to have an elegant minimalist desk but with a sculptural element.
As always I provided a number of designs for my clients and they decided to go ahead with the design outlined by the miniature model I showed at the beginning of this video.
The model is to scale and helped to not only visualise the design but also helped in the construction of the desk as I could reference the curves and angles of the rails.
As always thank you so much for your support here on KZbin. The fact that you even watch my videos means I can continue to make more unique builds and share them with you. And if you haven’t already, please consider subscribing as this will help my videos to get pushed out to more and more people.
Now you hear me talk about Patreon a lot. It’s actually the main way that I can financially support this channel and continue to provide free videos here on KZbin. If you’re still not sure about it, then you can watch this short video which will outline all the extra content you can gain exclusive access too. / about

2:40 for those new to design, don’t mistake room specific applications as a limitation. This is actually a huge advantage in design because now you can focus the appearance of your elements to look amazing from a fewer viewpoints. As wood workers, we are subconsciously Accustom to designing our work to be viewed from all sides and any angle - which is the real limitation

Your photo of the underside of your desk says a lot. I’ve been to many shows featuring “fine” furniture over more decades than I care to remember. I’m “that guy”that gets down on the floor and looks up to see what’s “inside”. Its mostly to get ideas “for how things were done”. It’s amazing how much different the fit and finish of what shows versus what’s hidden that there is in many “fine” pieces. I appreciate the care you took with the work shown in that shot.

I love your work, it’s always so beautiful. I really appreciate that you are continuing to make client projects and are producing your videos around those projects. A lot of KZbin makers stop doing commissioned projects and become “content creators” while making things for themselves which I feel takes away from the final project because when we make something for ourselves we are willing to accept something that is less than what it might have been. There are three levels of craftsmanship, in my view, the lowest being what we make for ourselves, the second being a commissioned piece, and the ultimate (but most rare) is something we build as an unexpected gift for a loved one. (Your new bench was made for a loved one; yourself, your shop and your craft.) Thank you for continuing to make things on commission and striving for art and beauty.

Hi Nick, Beautiful as always. When the video started and you said that the bends would be difficult, I immediately thought of boat builders who by having the luxury of working with green wood including root buttresses and branches can almost always find the shape they need in nature. The trade off is that it’s rare to get everything from a single tree but because color matching is not a problem, they manage to make some fantastic bent structural elements of their boats. Wouldn’t be nice to have a whole tree milled and dried, branches and all, to see what one could make? Probably never happen, but one can dream. Anyway, a most enjoyable build. I’m awaiting the next one impatiently. Cheers, Keith

even though i am now retired i really enjoy seeing a fellow craftsman produce something of this quality. don't worry about the hate on domino's, when its a case of how much bread can you put on your families table, then the quickest way is often the best. i spent many years as a one man shop doing commission only pieces. the thought of doing production work scared the pants of me as far as boredom went.
