Thanks for making this great video. I think the key to CO2 injection is being able to shut off the CO2 during the time the lights are off. The algae need much less light to grow and the added CO2 during the dark hours just encourage algae growth as algae IS using that CO2 in conjunction with slightest light to grow while the plants are “sleeping” and not using the excess CO2. Hence the difference of algae in each tank. That being said, the extra algae is also Hurting the plant growth in the CO2 tank as it’s covering the leaves….My advice, if you’re running a low budget tank, Just forget the CO2 injection and do frequent water changes. I’ve also thought about either taking out the diffuser at night or adding a stop valve however I wouldn’t try the second method out before fully testing capabilities of the DYI plastic bottle which may explode under built up pressure. A video I saw by someone else showed that sugar and yeast produce about 2 BAR of pressure.

Good experiment, thanks. As I think what caused algae issue on the CO2 injected tank is the nutrient deficiency. When injecting CO2 the plants tend to grow faster hence needing more nutrients. That is why the Red plants became less Red. Since you added same amounts of nutrient to both tanks, the CO2 injected tank consumed all of the least available nutrient and started starving. Which is the point algae takes control.

Good observation, I was trying to think why the algae problem. My expectation was just that the plants should grow faster with CO2.
@line43812 жыл бұрын
From what I can guess why the non co2 is much redder for both the h'ra and rotundifolia is because the non co2 gets more time to get red since it's not growing as fast as the co2 injected. The co2 injected is probably sending more new green leaves reaching the top of the water surface.

My theory as to the algae issues is that algae is limited by the amount of CO2 present in water. Higher-order aquatic plants typically grow better in low CO2 situations. This is because most aquatic plants are able to store CO2 in the leaves at night when CO2 is highest and use it for photosynthesis throughout the day, when it's lowest. Algae can't do this so when CO2 drops in the day and O2 is highest, they actually start to lose energy (making sugar during photosynthesis is reversible, CO2 and light = sugar and O2 OR sugar plus O2 = CO2)

The difference might be less noticeable in a tank with aquasoil or dirt substrate. Very interesting video and for those new to aquatic planting a relatively good place to start. 1 thing I will point out from experience, NEVER use DIY CO2. It is not a constant production of CO2 which leads to an imbalance which in turn leads to more algae. Algae thrives off imbalance . Another thing about these DIY systems is the diffusers do not produce small enough bubble making them extremely inefficient. As you have shown, algae will grow anyway which is why a clean up crew is so handy in a tank; shrimp, catfish, even ordinary fish and select snails will help reduce the amount of algae growth. It is perfectly acceptable to have a Low-Tech tank just don't Low-Tech the CO2 setup. CO2 is reserved for Hi-Tech setups where you have a good grasp on how to maintain balance and can spend the money on a canister, regulator, timer and proper diffuser. For Low-Tech setups, I suggest MD Fish Tanks here on YT. He does a great job on showing and explaining how to do Low-Tech tanks.

Whether or not you need co2 is very much down to plant choice: there are huge number of aquatic plants which will do very well with a simple background level of co2, and will reward you with good (albeit slower) growth and colour... so long as you take care of the other factors necessary: lighting (taking into consideration the intensity and duration of that lighting), substrate choice, nutrients, and temperature (and to a degree: water flow). That being said - they will obviously do a little better with more co2... it just isn't strictly necessary. And at the other end of the spectrum, there are the plants which simply aren't going survive - let alone thrive without a higher co2 level. If you're happy with the additional cost and very slight complexity... give it a go. You won't regret it 🙂

I tried hanging some dried (not fermented) catappa leaves + put some shrimps, and they're good to prevent algae bloom on new tank. Sure, it turns the water kinda brownish, and definitely not suited for dutch style with fully-packed stem plants and high lighting. But it prevents algae bloom and instead of an empty tank, you can see some shrimp happily swimming around.

Your FIRST BIG MISTAKE is to use ‘DIY fertiliser’. You cannot know the real PPM ratios in DIY fertilisers without testing in the right environment. This is the main reason why there is algae in your aquariums. In newly tanks, you may not even give any fertiliser for the first 2-3 weeks. Because the fertiliser at the bottom of the tank supports the plants sufficiently. The main problem in your tank is WRONG FERTILISERING.
@glork60099 ай бұрын
Nice, clear experimental setup. However, I have the feeling that practically no CO2 is flowing out of the diffuser?
@AriaArah7 ай бұрын
It's worth it if you have the means, time and money for CO2. But if not, just be diligent in maintaining and fertilizing your tank. It also depends on the types of plants you have. If you plan to keep a tank with high tech and carpeting plants, then you should use CO@, but if you plan on keeping the low tech route then it is not necessary.

Excellent video so my opinion is ok to run co2 but dont need to run it for long period through out the day when lights are on .when lihgts go out the plants no longer use co2 and that when alage take advantage. 1 or 2 drop per second only for 2 hours my opinion and for us who have fish must pay attention with co2 and not kill our fish with excessive co2 must be a balance must always keep youre eyes for fish rushing to surface looking for air so it recommended to have an air pump to stabilized co2 abundance keep the drop per second nice and slow and dont run all day with lights on .so from this video plants need it but not that much .the plants need rich source soil with fertilizer place in soil for roots for wonderful growth and also fertilizer place in water column for floating plants and plants with roots .this video is.excellent also always test ph and kh before co2 injected and when co2 is injected with 2 hours time frame and if you get reading of ph and kh droping then co2 should stop immediately. Again use co2 with caution for us aquarist with fishes

I think that the No CO2 tank will grow slower. From my experience, plants will use less resources to photosynthesize if the photo period is shortened or if the light source is dimmed. It's not uncommon to see plants kill parts of themselves and only preserve the most viable parts to reproduce when conditions are more favorable. We see this in java fern a lot.

There are many reasons for it. Planted tank is an ecosystem. In an ecosystem, there are many creatures that we can or can't see. Those creatures are including plants, fungus, bacteria, protozoa, etc. Those creatures have their own role, ie nitrifying bacteria's role to oxydize ammonia. What we want to prepare before we add fish in our tank is to ensure our ecosystem with all of the creatures in it, ready to process the fish waste. It is important because fish waste can kill our fish. We purposely add something like fish waste to our tank to grow those creatures. Fish waste come from fish food, so by adding fish food, we are simply adding something like fish waste, but have more nutrients in it.

Rotala color explanation: red color is always a sign of suffering. The redder the more he suffers. It is mostly caused by nitrate deficiency. In this case, it is redder from the lack of CO2.

@Nutamago17 күн бұрын
fish food contains protein and nutrients. In short, it's a way to feed everything in the tank. Plants, bacteria, critters, worms, etc. If you need more info, read diana walstad ecology of the planted aquarium

Co2 make more nutrition for plant but more nutrition for alagae too. Algae growt faster on co2, with no co2 alagae grow slower because plant use it for them.

The algae to your maintenance problem.. You need to perform 10% water changes daily so that they’ll give you gradually gets reduced . Hydrogen peroxide for every 20 days Might help you to keep of all the algae and keep the tank healthy
@dougclendening5896 Жыл бұрын
Interesting. I thought faster growing plants meant they would soak up the nutrients and choke out the algae. I wonder how much lighting or lack of Amano makes onnthe algae here. I'd love to see a similar experiment with and without Amano. No ferts. Just feeding fish. Otherwise, it's not safe to assume that more "critters" means less algae. That's simply called a correlation. Lastly, the red color difference for the Rotala could be a protection mechanism. The one without co2 might not be able to grow fast enough for the light and is protecting itself. Similarly as terrestrial plants do in too much sun.
@CoretanIjo Жыл бұрын
There wasn't any amano. The critters are some kind of infusoria, copepods, scuds and insect larvae. The experiment with or without those critters can only be done with lab equipment. Hobbyist trully has no control over those critters. Nutrients competition between plants vs algae has been questioned for long in aquarium setup. Even with excess nutrients, algae can't grow in healthy ecosystem that makes aquarist questioning the real mechanism of plants vs algae. The other explanation other than food web like in this video is allelopathy which was rejected because of lack of evidence. Edited: Evidence for the first thing is not needed as it can be seen clearly that the critters do eat algae. It is visible with naked eyes, so no evidence that they will exterminate algae is required. We just have no control over them, whether they'll appear in our tank or not.
@dougclendening5896 Жыл бұрын
@Ai's Vivarium thanks for the reply! I'm not saying the little critters aren't the reason for the algae getting smaller. I'm just saying that they might not be the main or only reason. For example, the main reason for low algae could be simply due to less co2, and the little critters eat up only 10% of it overall. Obviously, it's hard to test since the co2 prevented them! Very interesting outcomes! Another thing to consider in the future is exact plant matching. Specific plants let off different chemicals (like nicotine) to prevent the growth of competing plants and algae. I'd still love to see matching tanks with and without Amanos! It's my belief that their nonstop moving and feeding paired with the little turd pellets they make perform a role similar to the ecosystem that soil does: a nutrient buffer. The other interesting experiment would be testing those electrical algae killers that release bubbles into the tank on a set schedule. You could figure out algae once and for all!
@CoretanIjo Жыл бұрын
@@dougclendening5896 Alright, I agree with it. We should test how significant the impact of these critters. The one about plants ability to excrete chemicals is called allelopathy. That's the one that's been rejected by the majority of hobbyist. The reason it lack of evidence is because how hard it is to test in a functioning ecosystem like home aquarium. The lab test show it does work, but the question is about whether it has significant enough impact in aquarium or not. I can't set up any side by side comparisson for now. My hands are full, sorry.

Ditambah ikan guppy, moly, keong tanduk, udang red cerry, ikan corydoras panda & pigmy. Substrat pakai rumah bakteri+ aquasehat bakteri starter, soil dari aquariset+pasir malang merah. Pupuk pakai pupuk cair aqua segar seri tanam awal 1 kali pompa untuk 3 hari sekali+co2 tablet 3 hari sekali 2 tablet. Tanaman rotala pertumbuhanannya bagus, water sprite banyak daunnya yg kuning+ada bercak2 coklat, cabomba kalau daunnya di bawah banyak yg kuning2 tapi yg di bagian atas hijau, yg paling parah sih kadaka banyak titik hitam di daun seperti transparan.

How you make diy fertilizer
@myleswilson360811 ай бұрын
the reason for the algae issues is because you are only doing 1 water change a week in a new set up. Way too many nutrients from the soil along with the added fertiliser you are putting in each day.
