In this video about our visit to Gwennap Pit, near Redruth, we explore some of the history of this extraordinary place, sculpted in the ground by man in praise of God in heaven, its unique reason for being created and its lasting legacy - is it really a mile if you walk every circle up and back?

What a wonderful video!... "Like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel, Never ending or beginning on an ever spinning reel, As the images unwind, like the circles that you find, In the windmills of your mind." (sung by Noel Harrison for the film: 'The Thomas Crown affair' (1968). ...stunningly beautiful Cornwall brings out the old hippy in me! 😚

Ring a ring a roses!! And talk about Speedy Gonzalez with Andrew fair skipping up and down the circles! Myth or no myth, that's a little piece of Cornwall that's very special. As I mentioned once before, John Wesley's house, chapel and museum in London are also such a peaceful place to visit, even though the hustle and bustle of London is just yards from the front door. But there's something about the quiet & secluded area of Gwennap that has it's own special magic for sure........ J x

GPS on a phone isn't a constant update, it only updates every few seconds or so. So if you are walking in a circle or around a curve the two or more points of the GPS update will in effect be a straight line between points. So some of the distance won't be recorded, hence it only showed about half a mile. It still might not be a mile top to bottom but it will be closer. But it was still good fun to watch, keep up the good work.

Now that makes sense of the time and distance and pace etc - I thought I walked a little quicker than 2 mph! Sarah :)

As already mentioned, GPS is not continuously updated. However, Map My Walk/Run/Ride is terribly inaccurate, and can be up to 10% short. We can have our phones running (identical models) with one of us carrying them both (to prove the point), and MMW will give significantly different results. And both will consistently record shorter distances than RWGPS or Wahoo, as well as being less than the pre-plotted route. It's not you walking slowly! Thanks for another entertaining video.

Lovely video and great fun. I don't think a telephone GPS is accurate enough to work out the distance in circles, you'd be better using a step counter. 🐶🐾🐾🐶🍷🍺👍. 1,760 yards to the mile

I think that the app was definitely wrong, the half mile time would put you on for a 27 minute mile and judging by your pace you would easily have achieved a mile in around 17 minutes, still wonderful fun and indeed an enchanting place to visit off the tourist map.

Hello Sarah. Your phone app was using GPS, so as far as the app was concerned, you hadn’t really gone anywhere. I’ve got a walking app, but that measures steps, which is converted to miles. When we come down in September, I’m going to try it and let you know. Thanks for a great video.

Had you measured the diameter of a halfway step (looks around 20-21yards) out of the 13 and then used Pi and then multiply by 13 you may have got to around 880 yards. So walking up and down around all the circles would have been a mile, give or take a yard or two, but the exercise must have been well worth it. :-) Nice place, is it still used?
@CornishWalkingTrails

Oh wonderful! A mathematician using cold logic always wins the day! I believe it is still used, I know of someone who was a friend of someone (you know how it goes!) and they had their wedding ceremony there; not entirely sure what faith these days, Sarah :)

I call for a recount! The sign at the front says (3:49) if you walk DOWN and back UP it’d be a mile - not the other way around In other words, if you start at the bottom, you’ll have only walked the top circle once, missing off an extra 100 yards off your total C'mon guys, where are Jamie and Adam when you need them smh
@CornishWalkingTrails
@CornishWalkingTrails 4 жыл бұрын
I think the important thing is to walk every ring twice, regardless of whether you start at the top or the bottom! Given that I only walked the top ring once, that would be another 100yd but with 1760 yds in a UK mile, 100 yds will make very little difference, still not a mile. I still claim Mythbusted! :) Sarah (aka Jamie, the cool one!!)
