No, it's not because of the internet. If I was sitting at home and getting a phone a friend I could look it up in my personal copy of Encyclopaedia Britannica, so whether I was an internet noob wouldn't make a difference. I think what they did in old version was that they took the friend to studio as well, but he was sat in a backroom and the call was actually internal. I actually have no idea why they changed it, maybe to not pay for the transport for the friend, or something like that.
