i really think the "strange man" is just a mental delusion of John's guilty past life haunting him. the same "strange man" appears to Arthur too but not directly. I think the mysterious man is just a manifestation of guilt.

I think he is supposed to represent “the creator”. He presents himself differently at different times to teach different lessons or for different reasons (strange man, jimmy, the nun, etc). You know “what if god was one of us”. He says as much in his monologue to John about being “many things. An accountant.” He also tells John he will most definitely be judged. The creator also serving as a metaphor for Rockstar themselves.

No, i don't feel so. I feel he is an angel of sorts to test Arthur. To start him on the path of redemption. Arthur is given a pen to symbolically write his destiny. He is there just to explore Arthurs choice.

Great video as always! Interesting theory. Either way, I do wish we got an actual ‘Strange Man’ interaction with Arthur similar to how we got one with John. Had Brooks been the Strange Man, then I guess that is the interaction - but I kinda wish it was more, sorta how John did.

So in Rdr1 John had 3 encounters with the Strange Man, what if Arthur did too? Jimmy Brooks, Charlotte B, and Jean Marc (Jean Marc is just a maybe Idk) I couldn't think of another encounter where Arthur is confronted with kill or let live... I'm at work right now so distracted 😂😂😂 Great video as always!

I really don't believe so. He seems much more like a time traveler like Francis Sinclair. Most likely to test Arthur and to see if it was possible to set the man in a redemption path. and as previously stated «the Register Rock carving of “J Brooks, US Post, 1863” is that 1863 is the year Arthur Morgan was born.», which reinforces the idea he and Sinclair where really from a restrict group of time travelers. About the strange man, regardless of his house near bayou and the photo (which were at the time of very low resolution) with the owner of Armadillo's general store, my opinion it's all of us have their own demons - John's was so affected by them he psychologically projected the figure of the Strange Man, meaning he's a product of his head and the lifestyle which destroyed him mentally and he become delusional as a compensation. It's not the first Mental Health in the game, as Nevil also suffer of Multiple Personality Disorder (read the letter he carries with him) and there is no Gavin because Gavin was one of his alter Egos which at some point, for reasons not explained in the game, lost relevance in the condition and "went away", although creating a sense of void and emptiness in Nevil's conscience, but at the end he's able to surpass it. There were no real experts in psychiatry or psychology (real good made therapists at the time of the events). Psychiatry was giving it's first steps and surely the biggest of them didn't occur in the wild West but in proper places and institutions before being used as science for patient relief and even so psy stuff was seen mainly by men as a weakness; even today in our 21st century society our society grasps with it and with some patients "shame". Modern psychiatric hospitals, even considering Asylums, were not a thing before 1890's (except for Hospitals known as bimaristans were built in the Middle East in the early ninth century. The first was built in Baghdad under the leadership of Harun al-Rashid. While not devoted solely to patients with psychiatric disorders, early psychiatric hospitals often contained wards for patients exhibiting mania or other psychological distress. But as said, because of cultural taboos against refusing to care for one's family members, mentally ill patients would be surrendered to a bimaristan only if the patient demonstrated violence, incurable chronic illness, or some other extremely debilitating ailment. Psychological wards were typically enclosed by iron bars owing to the aggression of some of the patients. The first modern western similar institutions date to not before the 1800's in Europe, maybe 50 or more years latter in the US and again surely not in the wild west scenarios, including where the RDR1 story occurs, early 20th century, in places like wild Mexico - during the Revolution - and in places so remote as John's and his family home, all New Austin at the time). I believed the name J. Brooks 1863 was a reference to General William Brooks who fought in the Battle of Salem in 1863 during the Civil War. On the other hand, Jimmy Brooks would be inspired by the painter James Brooks and Austin Osman Spare, I'm still not sure. What I know is that the painting of the strange man is inspired by the portrait of Dorian Gray. Sorry for my inglish.
