I’ve genuinely enjoyed your channel here, Dean. I’ll be praying for you and your family, and especially your son H. 💖🙏🏻 I also get what you said about talking on everything that’s negative. It can be very depressing and discouraging after a while if that’s all you focus your attention on. I appreciate voices like yours because all my favorite podcasts, preachers, and teachers have become polarized: they either go extremely liberal and undervalue scripture or go extreme right and Christofascist. Nuance and separation of church and state are desperately needed.

I’ve seen behind the curtain on a few big Eva orgs that would never call themselves that and it has been sadly disillusioning… thanks for pointing these things out. Answers in genesis is a para church ministry so don’t have a problem with them making money. The ones that are “icky” are the ones asking people to give tithes and offerings then not being transparent about where that money goes. Churches need to do better.

If you are referring to the same report Julie Roy's did on Mac Arthur, what is more disturbing than the amount he was paid are the accusations of his daughter and Phil Johnson getting interest free "loans" for home improvements that did not have to be repaid from ministry money. If a secular business mogul did this for his kid and business partner, it would be a scandal. If those accusations are true, they are highly disturbing.

Why are they disturbing? The church isn't a business, and charging interest to fellow believers is not exactly a biblical principal. We aren't supposed to act according to worldly principles.

Yeah, I don't want to take sides here, because none of us knows the full story, probably. I mean, are those people on the church's payroll ? If so, is it possible that the loan arrangements are related to some sort of legal & legitimate salary packaging deal ? That being said, I haven't read the Roy's report on this, so may be missing some context here ...

@@johnnydev9318 Phil is definitely on payroll. He's a pastor. It doesn't make it any better for me if he got part of his compensation specifically earmarked for his home improvement. If he needed above and beyond his salary, he can go to the bank for a loan. This was a gift considering it did not have to be repaid.

My family is kind of sequestered for health reasons and I don’t have a lot of fellowship these days. I know this is parasocial but thank you for your service Dean. Also I am a teacher and can handle the kids being whiny and mean, but that’s way different from internet comments. Dean, good episode as always. I'm only half way through, so I don't know if you answered it yet. What do you expect these people's salaries/benefits to be? We also have to remember cost of living is different around the country with different tax rates.

I don’t think I can answer that. I mean you’re right, different places dictate different wages. That being said the average income where Duncan serves as president is 47k. Duncan makes 200 more than that. I’m not sure where the line is but I know he’s crossed it. I would point to what folks would expect a senior pastor to make in that area and say somewhere around that.

I have a tinfoil mindset and immediately went to seeing the male dancer situation as a setup to make Mark Driscoll look good. As you said that makes his brand more profitable, he's a hero. Though Jesus said at the end of the day no matter how well you have done, you say, I was just doing my job.
