The thing with this is, if they go under, yes you own the movies and the hardware but if you loose the hardware or hard drive you’ll have no recourse. No cloud source to re-download your movies, no way to export your files and play elsewhere.

I can't afford a $10-15K native 4k projector but I find value in that and wouldn't call it a rip-off, I think the kaleidascapes are rip off's cus I have a fair idea of what the hardware should cost and the delta between that and what they are charging. What I don't know is what their company operational and licensing costs are, which is I'm sure a decent chunk of the cost, maybe they can't sell it for less for other non profit motive based reasons, but somehow, I doubt it. It's almost to the point where a rich person won't buy something, or think it premium unless it hits a certain price poit, and that is their market so that is what they are aiming for, just need another company to come in and offer a similar service for the enthusiast. not even regular people, they will stick to discs and streaming, but we need a version of this for people who will spend $2000 on a sub woofer, $10,000 on a projector and want something less clunky then disc, higher quality than streaming and doesn't have the time, interest, or know how to do it themselves. Nvidia, get on this, you have the capital to make it happen.

I hear you. But you do not know the licensing costs. So even if you know the actual hardware costs we are missing the biggest cost for delivering this media device. So we really don't know if the company is trying to rip people off. They made the hardware and the licensing agreements . Is is not a crime to make an obscene profit. If you want the price to come down startup a company that delivers a cheaper better product. It really is that simple. When it gets to $2000 come back here and post your product for sale. I will see you in ten years. At least.
@Antimonkat
@Antimonkat 4 жыл бұрын
@@keepingupwiththejones2933 never said it was a crime but it's potentially bad business for them and that's there right. They can charge whatever they want but one can still evaluate the product value and decide of its worth it to them or not and honestly their cost isn't even that relevant to that decision. Really the main part of the pricing that bothers me the most is the jump up in cozt from the 6tb to the 12tb by like $2500. That's just pure greed.

@@Antimonkat well like I said my a better less expensive alternative. Honestly complaining about the price won't make it go lower. Creating competition will drive the cost down. Simple business . Supply and demand. If there is a demand for a product and you have the only supply, you can charge obscene prices and make obscene profit. Just look at oil industry. 99.999999% of cars trucks and SUV'S run on gasoline. Oil industry laughing all the way to the bank because Tesla is the only alternative and most people can't afford to pay $100k for a 4 door sedan.

Shane, we share the same passion in our hobby. I’m a big fan listening to your contents. Specifically speaking, I used DVDFAB and have spent time to be able to rip over 300 blu rays and 4K blu rays on my hard drives and I play them thru my Oppo-205 as well. This beats having to spent the $8000 for sure. It’s a lot of time but I get a lot of satisfaction from all that time and work. Keep doing what you’re doing brother.

It is a high price to pay for the average consumer, who would love to access this type of premium service for a reasonable price. Can it be done for a lower price...yes, absolutely! However, as you have clearly stated Shane: 1. Little to no competition in the market with this type of offering. 2. Do it yourself is very time consuming and therefore as much out of reach as the cost factor for most. We (the average person) hope to have an offering like a NETFLIX, for blue ray quality release without compression and yes..May be a premium solution with Day/Date release as well. Is that too much to ask for..? Currently..yea, apparently it is. Sigh...Such is life.

Assume much? I have Kaleidescape since their DVD version, I qlso have a stable 600 mbps downstream to download the movies I purchase from Kaleidescape, and even I stillthink it’s a ripoff. I now end up buying 5-10 UHD discs a month. Plop in the disc, and the picture quality in virtually all cases are identical (I use UB9000 as the UHD player). It’s easier for me to get my movies from Amazon and get them delivered within 24 hours. Kaleidescape didn’t give me better experience or making it “easier” for me to watch a movie.

Its more about ripping movies tho. The file sizes are huge because it provides the highest quality. Obviously better than streaming but also even better than a 4K UHD Blu-ray Besides being higher quality in both image and audio, it will adjust the aspect ratio which is huge. Dont have to worry whether content 4:3, 16:9, 2.35:1 ext I cant stress enough how huge that is So keep in mind its not just simply a library where u rip your collection

Food is a necessity for survival and you can get it for free from many places. If you're complaining about that you need to get your life in order. The kaleidescape is a luxury item and not a necessity. If you can't afford it why are you even looking at it and why do you feel the need to complain about it? They've been in the business for over 2 decades and have their niche in the space. Nobody wants to deal with the legalities of copyright, pirating etc. This is their corner of the AV market and they've owned it for quite some time.

I kinda don't understand why you seem so sensitive about this but the bottom line is in a few years the price will drop as competitors come into play! I'm old enough to remember when VHS players were 5 grand ! Lol! But you know what ,that didnt last long at all! I think people see it as a RIP off because its basically "software" and of course a huge hard drive! But it's not like thousands of man hours of men sweating and hand building anything lol! Its only expensive because some people are actually buying it at this price. Personally I dont think this company is going to be successful and it wouldnt surprise me if the company went into this knowing that! Sometimes businesses are only created to get investors interested so the entrepreneur can make a qwick buck and walk away! It's called business and it's done on a daily business! Most company's start out knowing they wont show a profit for two years and have the owners pre determined salary built in to the initial business loan or investment from private parties! So even if the business fails the owners are still comfortably paid ! Sure its not "ethical" but unfortunately it is legal and done daily!

I think people get that this is luxury product. Even for some of the wealthy, they don't all get the purpose of some luxury products. There are probably quite of few people even here who could whip out a checkbook and cut the check for the device without skipping a beat. Just because you can doesn't necessarily mean you should. I read that lot of millionaires live rather modest lives. That being said, you posted a provocative title to your review. You got provocative responses. What's the problem? You make ripping a movie sound like it's a trip to the moon. I just ripped six this weekend. I cleaned, watched a game or two, and even slept while ripping a disk. It was really hard work.

They could make so much money if they wouldn’t be so greedy. Make the cost of entry reasonable and build a huge user base. Make your money from movie sales, or better yet make it a subscription-based movie service. $29/mo for access to the entire store. That’s a movie sale every month from every subscriber. Plus their user base could be 1,000 times larger than what it is now. They aren’t making money like Netflix is.

Also Libreelec is a version of KODI operating system not a device. Its a more optimised version of KODI which is why I am using it. My Zotac Zbox is an old box with Nvidia ION CPU / GPU which is underpowered and official KODI runs like crap on it which is why I use Libreelec on it. Libreelec runs very smoothly on the box. Kaleidescape is an excellent product that STILL has no equal in the market. Are they expensive? Well, for the do-it yourselfer, sure, $6k for their entry level model is a lot of money. They/we aren't their target market. So while I would like to own one (and can afford it), it doesn't allow me the control I crave with storing my movie collection on a server. I do believe that someone with some skills and $$$ can come into this market and create a "cross-over" product that would feature a KILLER UI AND allow us to stream our content from servers in the best possible quality WITHOUT breaking the bank. Zappiti and Zidoo (what's with the Z's??) look like contenders but so far, they're not even in the same league. I've seen better Kodi front ends and I own the Zappiti 4K HDR unit! A very underserved market imo.

I'm thinking that it would probably be quite expensive. Ironically, there is a really nice Kodi skin (I forget the name) that comes pretty close to the look and feel of K. Unfortunately, Kodi has some issues and just isn't ready for prime time. I was "hoping" Zappiti would be the thing that just works and looks good. It's pretty glitchy and the UI looks like an old Kodi skin from 10 years ago. I guess it's still a better solution than Plex.

I can afford the product and yet, I think it's a rip off coming from a broadcasting background. If this has a harddrive, then it'll fail in time. Personally, I feel that Apple make far superior software than what Kaleidascape is capable of. I don't appreciate why a Pioneer or top end Panasonic 9000 UHD player is not a far better way of delivering film at one eighth of the price along with the first class reliability and multi platform use of 4K Dolby Vision Apple TV at £200 for 'every day' use. I'm not convinced that in five years time Kaleidascape will still be around - I know that the Apple TV / iTunes and 4K UHD Disc experience will still be on AV enthusiasts shelves. From what I can see, the Kaleidascaope approach is over complicated and unnecessary.
