The Kingi movement and those Maori that are supporting it, are being hugely disrespectful of their Chiefs who either signed the Treaty in 1840 or ratified it at kohimarama in 1860. Moari need to read the 1860 transcripts of those Cheifs to understand exactly how the felt about the Kingi movement and how they felt the treaty was improving the lives and wellbeing of Maori under one law with the "Queen above" and "Chiefs below", but with Maori and Pakeha as equal .

tommcg7564 is yet another misguided person who has been mislead by the revisionist Maori historians and their children's bedtime story version of NZ history. You are 100% correct allice444. I'll try to be brief: The Govt called the Kohimarama Conference at Mission Bay to make the anti-government King Movement, and their supporting tribes, realise that not to honour the Treaty of Waitangi, would result in bringing the wrath of the British Empire for breach of it. They, in their futile ignorance of realpolitik, decided to take on Queen Victoria's empire that ruled over 1/4 of the Earth's landmass, and 1/3 of its population, and whose Indian regiments alone, were more than the militaries of the whole of Europe combined. Yet the Kingitanga, in some misguided belief they possibly had any chance of winning, decided they were in a position to do just that, and so set into motion what happened to other Maori tribes too. The unnecessary deaths of Maori during the NZ Land Wars were a direct result of this deluded decision, which the Kingitanga has never taken responsibility, or apologised for. They have no care for what they caused. In my tribe's dialect we call the Kingitanga "Te tangata whakahihi" - The arrogant ones.

In terms of kingitanga today Waikato where aware of the issues that were to come because of how Tueitia was appointed and he wasn’t chosen by the hapu's, it was the Taumata and they went against the Queen's wishes and that was because her choice was consider inappropriate in terms of the korero that was handed down apparently.

Yes you're right and that's generally the way it was before the Treaty was signed, which gave every Moari the same rights, privileges, and "obligations" as every other British subject, It was allowing Moari to be unique individuals with individual rights to buy and sell their property as they wished that started this Kingi movement, because those Moari who held power over the tribe and its members saw their power diminishing in favour of individual rights under British law .

I think there's much ambiguity that surrounds Tuheitia's title and his role. As much is the same with most things that pertain to Maori - that there is no clear understanding which is why 170 years on, there is still much debate that surrounds the Treaty of Waitangi

The tribes all unanimously voted that Te ATA would be queen and the motu kept the taonga in tainui. Tainui are only kaitiaki, the motu decides not some whakahihi who say we give it to us.

@FQuee that would defeat the whole purpose of the Kingitanga. it was established to unite Maori. the Kingitanga is for tribes that wish to support it. if you don't want him to be your King then he's not your King. They saw British governance & law in action how it was good for Maori but not for the Chiefs, and wanted to take back power
