The problem with "you can't trust anyone" is that one can fail to see those who you actually can trust. This made Kiwi vulnerable to Farraday. To her, he was no more untrustworthy than David's crew when the fact was David's crew would have had her back and Farraday killed her the moment she ceased to be of use.

Yeah a self protective shield of cynicism may help you avoid attachment, but it also blinds you to making a ranking series of trust since you dont reach out and expect everyone to hurt you somehow. It essentially gives you false confidence when you actually need to make a unbiased analysis of others

I think she saw that coming, she just ended up trapped after burning her bridges with everyone else. She knew Faraday was one of the least trustworthy people around and was trying to cut him off asap, its just the only kind of people willing to work with a backstabber are...other backstabbers.

In addition to your points regarding her personality being good for netrunning due to the data processing, I feel it would also be good to be very calm and controlled as a netrunner due to the fact that netrunning heats up your body to dangerous degrees (which is why netrunners have to wearing cooling suits, or sit in tubs of ice if they can't afford a suit), so you'd have to learn to control your emotions to avoid heating yourself up due to emotions, because you'd want to minimize internal body heat increases when you're already having to be concerned about netrunning body heat increases. Also, a lot of people forget that edgerunners are, at the end of the day, mercenaries. They get into edgerunning because they're looking for a way to survive in a very dangerous and morally-grey world/city, so at the end of the day, your average edgerunner is always going to be looking out for number one. Honestly, the "family and loyalty" dynamic of the other characters is probably looked upon more strangely by the average citizen of Night City... Lucy is the normal one. 😅

I would think Kiwi's betrayal is based on Maine's actions and on David's. She was there to see Maine's symptoms first-hand and could have died due to his psychosis. She is also present to see David exhibiting these symptoms. With these observations I would think she is calculating how long David will last before falling to the psychosis. Lastly, I think she identifies herself as a survivor in the harsh environment of NC which guides how she thinks. So, when Faraday comes to her with the offer I would argue she doesn't think "what should I do" but instead thinks "what would a Survivor do?"
@zotaninoron3548
@zotaninoron3548 Жыл бұрын
I am not convinced she had any idea that the offer from Faraday would intersect with the gang until Lucy was finally exposed after springing the trap. I don't think she even knew it would be Lucy until she was lured there. And by that time Kiwi was stuck within Faraday's scheme. Going along with it was the only way forward.
@MisterCynic18

Actually I think the biggest factor for Kiwi's betrayal was Lucy. She could tell Lucy was keeping secrets and after finding out what she did to protect David ended up sabotaging their mission and getting Maine and Dorio killed, she knew that Lucy's priorities meant everyone else would be collateral. So she stabbed her in the back before what she expected Lucy would inevitably do to her. Imo Lucy and her critically poor communication skills is the primary reason for the collapse of the gang.

Imo, if you're truly being empathetic with Kiwi and don't rely on a kneejerk reaction to judge her, you know she isn't a villain. Context is key, and in the world of Cyberpunk, what she did can hardly be counted among the worst things. Trying to survive through a betrayal when everyone around you is on a path of self-destruction is hardly a villainous thing to do, especially when it isn't done out of malice.

Yeah, I consider myself to be a softie, and I see Kiwi's pov, even if I wouldn't do the same. I would take Maine's attack much more personally, even if I knew he was under the effects of cyberpsychosis. And I would constantly be looking for an out, even if I would never consider selling out the team. When I play Cyberpunk 2077, I feel so overwhelmed by the filth and unfairness, that I just kinda detach from it all, and end up a little like Kiwi, or even the Edgerunnner's portrayal of Adam Smasher, a detached, violent individual, who has a little respect for certain things.

V and Johnny would just take the most time as she'd need to play through every Side Job Gig, debatably all the NCPD Scanners too so that she never missed any scenes with Johnny and got every bit of dialogue possible from both V and Johnny, however it would make for a preem vid given that she'd be able to analyze Johnny, and then in analyzing v she'd be able to pinpoint almost exactly how far the relic is in taking over V at certain points just due to how V changes overtime to Johnny's influence. The romance options would be the next best ones to analyze, then the prologue characters, certain side characters like some of the Aldecados members etc, a lot of characters she'd be able to analyze but obviously a lot of work and time required to do so thoroughly

Kiwi's betrayal was foreshadowed too. She expressed her discontent with David repeatedly in passive-aggressive ways; she didn't feel appreciated or listened to. If Edgerunner was a trolley problem, her staying "loyal" to the team would have been equal to throwing herself in front of the trolley hoping to derail it. She probably realised that, when it came to survival, she couldn't trust Lucy or Rebecca as they'd go down with David, and David was losing himself to cyberpsychosis. For some reason I feel like Kiwi is kind of what Lucy could have become if Lucy had lived longer and experience a few more hardships. If Lucy opening to David and her loyalty to him had turned to betrayal, I could imagine her fitting Kiwi's role in her growth. Kiwi's a Lucy that never had a David in my opinion.

You view them from a different lens because of your background in psychology and it provides a very good discussion on the characters we love. Kiwi seemed to be one of the least popular of the gang from what I've seen on the internet, and there could be multitudes of reasons why. But as you explain in this video, her actions are justified, and really not a by product of malevolence or empty-heartedness, but rather it is just her way of surviving the Hell-on-Earth that is Night City.

By definition, just surviving to adulthood in Night City in the lower classes would be enough for a PTSD diagnosis, elevated by Edgerunning being such an extremely dangerous job with life-or-death decisions being made multiple times a day in an environment of constant betrayal. Being in the job is going to filter you into the categories of cPTSD, deathwish, or dead first job. The others on the team either have literally no way out, can't leave the group because they have someone more important than their own life, or are on the deathwish path. It's very obvious that the group is on the verge of disintegrating before she decides to turn and that when it blows up it will take all of them with it. It's only after she accepts that there is no way she can change their path that she gives them up for a lost cause and decides it's time to go. In her lexicon, that's probably not that much of a betrayal. And tellingly, when her way out fails and she knows it can't work, her second priority is immediately doing what she can to keep them alive a bit longer.

And yes, a lot of people forget that there are some choices with no good outcome....

I don't think she actively betrayed the squad, actually. The initial capture of Lucy was entirely incidental that it ended up being Lucy; Faraday was just catching the Runner who was mucking up the corporation's information digging. But then as soon as they caught the Runner and it turned out to be Lucy, Faraday had Kiwi on the hook and could just blackmail her into making the situation worse for the gang which gave him more fuel to blackmail her
@Ruggedtoaster
@Ruggedtoaster Жыл бұрын
Kiwi’s phrasing is important, she says first “I taught Lucy not to trust anyone in night city” she states her regret and then jokes about turning that lesson on Faraday. It’s the same regret that had been building in her and was why she went against her own beliefs to tell Faraday no in the first. It’s not about revenge but rather a last wish, get Lucy back using her betrayal of Faraday.

Kiwi's betrayal to me is hurtful but I get it....but betraying Lucy to me was the worst part but when Lucy and David became a package she could no longer get away from just David alone without losing Lucy as well. I'm a very analytical person in the abstract but socially extraverted (INFJ in MBTI land) so I can easily see both sides and it is SOOO hard to say whether she was right or wrong.....I relate to both Lucy and David equally and that has made it difficult too because I got attached to them.

I think her experience with Maine and David's instability were the largest factors in her decision making process. I don't think she was exactly bitter about Maine assaulting her; I think she just saw where David was going and figured that the next time could very well kill her. To quote another great TV series, "You're a ticking timebomb and I am not sticking around to see the boom." Plus with what Lucy was up to; Farraday probably laid it out that the group's days were numbered and she could either walk away with a decent chunk of money and immunity or stay on a (from her point-of-view) sinking ship. I also get a bit of a vibe that Farraday and Kiwi had a bit of thing going on. Now, I am not 100% percent committed to this theory, so if there's something that I overlooked or forgot that proves me wrong; I am open to it and I think it's more of an interesting possibility as oppose to "They're absolutely sleeping with each other!" The reason why I think that might be the case is because when Farraday sets her up to kill her; she knows coming back to see him in person is a bad idea and does it anyway. Farraday also phrases it in a sentimental way. I cannot see someone of her personality type not recognizing it as a complete trap unless there was some type of emotional attachment or sexual attraction going on there. I am not saying they were in love or anything. I am saying that I think they might have had something going on either before the events of the show or later into the series. I say this because the only time when I have seen calm, rational, and logical women make such a clearly stupid and obvious mistake it was because it involved either a family member or a guy she slept with.

I dont think the two are mutually exclusive. A lot of comments coming to the defense of her are that the gang was self imploding and its only natural to cut bait and run. But in the context of villainy vs heroism villainy is largely based on acts that will harm others for your own benefits. Frankly the gang themselves when viewed through this thought process are villains. As such kiwi is a villain and a survivor to try and get rid of a group of villains close to her for her own sake, not to stop a band of murderous thugs cause their killing is going to get out of hand. Even stopping the corporate empire cause its corrupt, no its revenge.

I like your comment on living in a safe vs dangerous part of the world. An opinion I hold fairly strongly is that morality is a luxury of the privileged. If you have the space to think about "right" or "wrong", then you have the privilege of having a choice that isn't afforded to everyone. However, there is a downfall to being hyperanalytical in this way. Empathy and valuing social bonds is a part of survival, that's why we have these tools in our brain to begin with. We're weaker by ourself, and stronger in a pack. Kiwi is a survivor, but she was limited by her understanding, this idea that she's the only one she can rely on. She probably had a higher chance of survival sticking with her pack.

I really do forgive Kiwi for her choices. As a viewer everything about the show spells out the impending tragedy if you pay attention (even the OP tells you *exactly* how David died). So of course someone as analytical as Kiwi who finds themselves in the midst of that tragedy would do the only thing that seems logical for survival and try to leave the group, no matter what their heart may say. Alternatively, I like to imagine Kiwi's downfall is meant to represent her fatal flaw: her mantra that you should trust no one in Night City was incomplete, and her ultimate downfall was that perhaps she never realized it's actually about not trusting the wrong people. Who knows how things may have gone differently for the crew if Kiwi chose to embrace and trust the "right" people, Her people?

Though Rebecca is my favorite girl in the gang because she's the one I'd like to hang out with the most, (also she looks simultaneously cool and cute), Kiwi is actually the one I relate with the most. I just learned I'm a bit of a pragmatist. I know her betrayal is super wrong, but she seemed to hate it too, so redeemable.

i wish there was a good reason for why she betrayed them. Unless i missed anything that action of her was totally random and dump to trust that guy and sell out the people she could rely on. Oh and you missed to censor a nip of Kiwi at 5:43 if its your censorship of course.

Might be relevant to the faceplate situation. We learn from CP 2077 that you can replace major parts of your physical features with cyberware and although kiwi instals a mask plate, its very likely that she has a plate with her 'actual' face in her possession as we've learned from certain joytoys who visit Finger's clinic in the game. I mention that all to say its possible that kiwi was never truly inclined to reveal her identity to Maine's group and it's likely the only person who knew who she really was is Faraday.

Evil no, Foolish yes. People make foolish choices out of fear sometimes cause when you're so afraid of something you're not usually thinking clearly I can't call her a survivor cause she was trusting a guy with spider eyes.

There is something about Kiwi which is not ordinarly. She has tattoos on her private parts, and not concerned about showing up naked, However she is well suits up for walking in the streets even giving the impression of shielding herself. It makes one wonder what her previous workplace was or what she was engaged in for living before went to hacking. Having those in mind the lack of her mounth area gives people horrible conclusions. (Horror story for each of my 3 Theories ie. Gotten removed for expanded fuctions/ Received syphilis/ Breaken off after bite)

As someone who played the game and knows how Night City is I understand why she did what she did, even if it sucked for everyone else and was awful. But she saw a way out and she wanted to take it, something almost everyone is aiming to do who lives there. You either want to leave or take it over, more often than not you get neither outcome because of who is actually ruling it

Well Georgia...betrayal is always a cowardly and selfish act which tries to hide behind words like "pragmatic". And the results tend to be very much indistinguishable from evil. An act of betrayal is synonymous with treachery...which is regarded by many as the WORST kind of evil.

Kiwi was honestly the only truly emotional character. She knew what was going on at all times and responded to it accordingly and wasn't betraying anyone because all of the other characters would have lived if they simply trusted her. It wasn't for the eddies it was what would have been good for the crew if they listened. They were all broken characters but Kiwi was literally the only one who put in the effort as they all fell apart. buuuut that's also a weird dichotomy when one assumes they know what's best for folks in crisis.

Honestly despite her 'betraying' the gang, I love her so so much as a character - she both looks and just IS badass. Always felt that she was looking at Faraday's offer from a realistic pov, and honestly felt like if she'd declined he'd zero her for knowing so much. Underrated Edgerunner's waifu fr

I have maybe a bizarre view on Kiwi, whereby I think her survivor status isn't inherently a good thing. I'd personally rather die a hero than survive a villain, or survive compromising my morality. And what many ignore is her unnecessary nudity in front of a child? :/

I wonder if any of you would be as fair to Micah Bell from RDR2 given the similar positions... At least ignoring the sadism he partakes in. It’s very clear his decision to betray the gang (if he did) was out of a need to survive. Just curious as a lot of you seem to be cutting this person slack when I’m willing to bet you don’t for many other characters...

As a INTP (probably one of the most logical personalitys) never even considered kiwi as a villain just as someone that did ehats best for her self and her own survival.
@honkbrother8000
@honkbrother8000 Жыл бұрын
Nah it's maybe not malicious. But it's selfish it's clearly an evil act and she knows that or she wouldn't feel remorse. And logically it doesn't make sense either. The logical decision would be to double cross Faraday since he can't be trusted. Think back to the job where kiwi got punched out. They thought they were set up when Tanaka short circuited. We later on found out it was Lucy but kiwi would have no way of knowing that so Faraday is a potential traitor and honestly one of the most likely on the list. The second Faraday insisted they meet up face to face she should of known it was fishy. When I first heard him say that I immediately knew what was about to happen. In that moment where she has nothing more to offer Faraday and he has the money she's completely at his mercy. She should of known it would go south if she just thought about it logically. (Also wanna point out. For someone who's whole moto is never trust anyone. She trusted Faraday A LOT in that moment. She had played her cards had no back up plan and still showed up) In the end. That entire event was preventable by kiwi. It could of easily gone another way. She could of gone along with the mission captured Lucy then helped her escape to take down Faraday and warned David of the exo. She had plenty of opportunities to sneakily set somthing up.

If she was really a "survivor" who's code is to "never trust anyone in NC" then she should have left town or hid out. She had the skill and means to do so but chose to undermine the crew. You went from explaining why she did what she did, to justifying her decision. If you don't want to do this drive by cool but don't call the folks we rollin on. Her redeeming qualities don't absolve her choice. Also I find it interesting that you didn't she that her saying "never trust anyone in NC" was her talking about herself. Her saying that over again was the loudest foreshadowing Ive seen in a while

I find it interesting that due to my psychology I play Cyberpunk 2077 very poorly. Instead of the canon "I want to be a legend!", I reflexively try to help out the little guy and make the world a better place. Hell, even when being hyper-violent it's to protect people or avenge them. I fail at being an edgerunner methinks 😋
