Question time. Is Lando Norris, just another pay driver? His dad's a multi millionaire, so he's no better than Latifi or Stroll... right? Well, it's not that simple. There's a LOT of money in motorsports, but I want to uncover some truths. Today I'm jumping into the phenomenon of pay drivers, their history in Formula 1, and ultimately, if Lando qualifies for that title.

One thing I adore Kimi Raikkonen so much: he was very poor, jis family is very poor and they didn't even have an inside toilet in their house. His dad worked as a street cleaner and a taxi driver. Kimi needed to proof himself all the time he got in a car. He was always very much tested. Kimi has also silently donated to poor children's charities.

@@TheNecromancer6666 honestly, I'm pretty sure Hamilton does participate in smaller charities as well, but for other stuff he posts it on his social media... so what? Can't we just agree that there's nothing inherently wrong about raising awareness? Why should he not talk about it? Ya know that when a celebrity endorses a charity, that's worth a lot to the charity! Now you can criticize the way he's doing it, that's your opinion, but I don't understand how Hamilton talking about it is inherently a bad thing. This is why I think Lewis Hamilton is so insanely fast. The way his dad worked to get him into go karts I think Lewis feels like he almost owes his dad 110% effort every time he steps in a car to repay the opportunity his dad gave him. That’s something most other drivers won’t have.

Tommo F1 i actually don’t think he’s a pay driver, taking aside his talent -which he obviously has as we’ve seen- i’m of the idea he had some help in climbing the f1 mountain, he started very young with races which i suppose is kinda common between drivers at this time and obviously money did much of the work at first. talking about how much he brings to the sport, as you said about some other pay drivers, i think his sponsors bring but not that much. i’m going off topic right now but i think he brings a younger fanbase, so he’s ‘helping’ without money, i just wanted to add this thought of mine lmao.

@@jordishima well yes it does ;) 2 years at that age makes a lot of difference. I just checked their respective height. Max is now 10 cm taller than Lando. When this photo was taken, Lando was 13 and Max 15 years old. It's not so surprising that Max is a "head" taller than Lando. Don't know how you remember yourself at that age, but in a very short period of time, you grow up very fast. And you can see at Max's head that he's starting to become a teenager and you can even "see" the acne coming out ^^
@ellis1034
@ellis1034 3 жыл бұрын
Lando just didn't grow until he was like 15, in other pictures you can see he's also a lot shorter than other people his age at that time. And he was also still growing a bit when he started in f1, he's just a bit of a late bloomer. The picture I'm reffering to was in his karting days where he's standing next to Max Fewtrell (who is the same age as him) and he is a good head shorter, but now he is slightly taller than Max, so it all evened out.

It’s always been a game of boys with toys. I can imagine most of this is just being envious because a 17 year old is making millions while already growing up crazy rich. It does seem unfair, but to be honest it has been like that in F1 always. Instead of being mad about it people should be more focused on being able to afford to get their own son through a karting and into a F1 career.

Lando was a top driver at every level. He outshined the other drivers (he has so many karting titles, and in cars, blowing out whoever was in second place). It's not like Mazepin, who barely cracked the top 4 in his championships and still got promoted to the next levels. Lando earned his seat in every single championship he has raced in. Yeah, he had the financial backing, but other drivers get this financial backing through sponsors anyways.

I like Lando because he's a great driver and brings some joy and comedy to the grid. He takes his racing extremely seriously but he also provides fun to the sport when he's not driving. He's not just racing, going home and taking his father's money. He has his own Twitch and KZbin network that he built with friends. He's extremely humble and I think that's amazing with someone as young as him and as successful he has been/will be. His parent's seem like they let him be independent and only give him what he needs and he fills the rest in. Like they gave him the ability to start racing but he took that and ran with it and it became his passion. He then found Twitch and KZbin does that now and streams with his friends.

There is a slight difference between coming from a family comfortably being able to pay for karting - which is a very expensive hobby - and your family sponsoring or buying an F1 team for you to race in. Still, neither money nor surname can drive a car, and you do need a portion of talent and ability to do well enough to earn the licenses needed to get to the higher ranks of racing. No super license no F1 seat, basically. Yes, there are probably better drivers than Mazepin, Latifi and maybe Stroll who have lost the opportunity due to less funding, I won't disagree to that, but without their funding we might (and would in the case of Stroll) have lost teams on the grid. And that wouldn't have been nice either.

@@shafwandito4724 It was used as a "part" of the discussion not to say that is the sole piece. If you want to compare though, Verstappen was part of red bull junior program previously so it was natural if he did move up it would be to TR. They wanted to make a driver change and in their stable of drivers Max was their pick to get the call up. Stroll on the other hand was part of ferrari's driver program and then switched to Williams straight from F3. Going from F3 and being moved up in the team you've been developing for is a little different than making that kind of move from a different program. It was never really hidden that Stroll got the seat because of the money his father brought to the team. That's what made the jump more drastic.

Even for me in Karting, I race people that are on 5x the budget and they just pay their way into series' such as Formula Vee, but at a certain point in the motorsport hierarchy, team owners will look and see that "He isn't actually that good" or "He has money and can drive". Motorsport is one of the best sports to watch and to be in, but as you put at the start it has one of the biggest barriers to get to the top. Edit: Changed "I race people on 5x the budget" to "I race people that are on 5x the budget", may be causing some confusion.

For me the issue is less pay drivers and more the idea of how hard it is for a kid from a working class background (like Lewis and Ocon) to make it. The Lances, Landos and Nicoloases of the world had so much money to help them get the best of everything and participate in the best of series. As a result, they became very good drivers. That said, I do think Lando is head and shoulders above the other two. I just wonder how many of the others on the grid came from working class families (maybe Seb? but I doubt many others).
