Is Le Samouraï Criterion 4K a worthwhile upgrade?

Great Review James. I may pick this up later. Definitely an amazing film. I’m definitely a bigger fan of Army of Shadows. But with Criterion updating the back catalogs to 4K I’m going to wait. They already got me a few times already. Never again 😄

Glad you enjoyed the review, Archie! It’s hard to say which titles will get upgraded to 4K and when (some may never get a 4K) so if you really want a title and it’s available on blu-ray ….

Really excellent, in-depth review, thanks. I've seen Le Samourai couple times on the Criterion Channel and love it, may buy 4k disc in future...I already have two other Criterions starring Delon, both absolutely excellent, Purple Noon (the original Talented Mr. Ripley), and La Piscine. Speaking of Delon co-starring with wife, he also starred with an ex wife when filming La Piscine, vivacious iconic star in her own right, Romy Schneider.

Excellent review of Le Samouraï. For some strange reason I’ve never seen it. I’m looking forward to watching my B&N sale pickup coming this Noirvember! You asked what other Alain Delon films we like. Without hesitation, Purple Noon! An incredible Tom Ripley film. I love Matt Damon’s portrayal in The Talented Mr. Ripley, but there’s no denying Alain Delon’s screen charisma is tough to beat.

Agree, Damon great in the remake, love both versions. I also have the blu-ray La Piscine, and have to rate it my favorite Criterion starring Delon.

no it's not the same transfer, I prefer the Criterion.

@@patyounggun5458 It is. Criterion and Pathé worked together. It is explained both in Pathé and Criterion editions. The Pathé edition has HDR and Dolby Vision, Criterion has only HDR. So we can assume Pathé's edition is slightly better

Great review! I ended up picking up the 4K last week along with Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid. John Woo's "The Killer" is a melodramatic twist on the story of Le Samourai and I highly recommend that to anyone who enjoys this film. Walter Hill's "The Driver" is also a fun take on Melville's masterwork.

Well done on the review! I’m eager to pick this up in November. I’m a huge fan and this sounds like a solid upgrade over the blu ray. One Alain Delon title I’d recommend is No Way Out, also known as Tony Arzenta. It’s an Italian crime film and it’s excellent. I think you would enjoy it.
