Press photographer and Leica M and Q user here. The newspaper got a new trainee, who never had a camera, but got job, where a camera was needed. I borrowed him a M240 with a 50/1.5, gave him in short instruction into basic photography and 75% of his first shots were very good. He's improving his skills. The only auto settings to choose on a M240 are ISO and shutter speed. The M isn't perfect for all sports, but some disciplines can be shot. In general, you're right, you've to choose the right tool for your work, commercial or personal doesn't matter. The quality remains long after the price is forgotten.

Great video and conversation! In my experience it’s really important to think about what your subject/vision is for your work. Start out with a cheap system until you know, for me I blew thousands of pounds on Sony systems and lenses because I thought it would make me better, obviously this wasn’t true. I found limiting myself to one body and lens was the best thing I ever did, I switched to Fuji x100f and after a few years I discovered that my real passion is black and white documentary style. I nervously brought the Q2M and for me it is worth every penny and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to the right person.

Great conversation - and love how you recognize that each photographer has a unwise set of needs and that set can be different for commercial work vs personal work. Would love to get to a point where I can play with other camera systems. Until then it’s ride or die with my EOS R and my gigantic zoom lenses. 🤣📸

The digital bodies I believe are a waste of money, but the lenses are a different story. If I thought the digital bodies would last as long as the film ones then maybe I could justify it, but I doubt the electronics are going to work 50 years down the road. Plus digital components are forever changing and getting better and better.

One of the factors that driven me to Leica M system are lenses. M lenses are the smallest in class (they are even smaller than Fuji's crop-sensor lenses), and usually provide classic and very artistic-look, that you just can't find on other systems. And when you read about them, turns out you just can't use them on other systems. I own Zeiss 50mm 1.5 and Leica Summicron 35mm and just don't know what can come even close to those lenses in terms of the size and look of images taken by them.

I shoot canon for newspapers rock solid kit it’s strange tho I don’t find them sexy to use they are just tools absolutely incredible tools. on my own time I try all brands models formats mainly for YT channel content but I love them all I did sell my left nut to help fund my first Leica a Q2 so so happy with that purchase and don’t even miss the nut at all very willing to sell the other to fund an M 📷 the nuts are redundant anyways 😞

My problem is that shooting Fuji for years has given me an addiction to having tactile controls and beautiful design. As I'm looking to upgrade to full frame, I keep coming back to Leica, because the cameras are beautiful and have the feel and design I'm looking for, it seems the logical path is from Fuji to Leica.

I took that path for kind of the same reasons and do not regret it.

I had to sell my Leica M9 Monochrom. It had the replacement sensor but it corroded after 6 years. Apparently Leica used a second replacement sensor that didn't corrode. I have a film Leica but might buy a mirrorless camera to use my M lens. Researching which camera works best with adapted lens.

Without used market I would have never started with photography (first proper camera in 1998: Nikon F2 Photomic with a 50mm 1:1.4 Nikkor). Now I am grown up and shoot Leicas (M4/M5/M8/M9-P with a bunch of ancient Leitz glass). Just shoot whatever fits your needs and budget ;)

If I had no debt, I'd buy one. They have high resale value and there is an elitism and euphoria about owning something of very high quality that you can touch and feel.

I had the Canon 5d with the 16-35, 24-70, 70-200, and 135mm lenses. Then I finally bought the M10 Monochrom, with the 50mm 1.4, and 21mm 3.4. Sorry Canon, but Leica left you in the dust. I don’t want to hear the Leica can’t shoot sports or weddings, because it can. Traveling with the M setup is so amazingly easy. Let me say this, just try the Leica M.

For M series - YES. For SL NO. I will keep my Canon 5dIII equipment. I use Leica, Canon (CPF gold/gold) and Nikon analog and digital. So I'm no fanboy. SL too heavy, too big, no advantidge. And far to expensive with no support for professional users. See Canon CPS.

I’ve heard this from several people. Even some who tried to switch to SL after Canon changed to the RF mount just to end up going back. Canon is pretty unmatched with responsive professional product support

No In my Opinion it is not the money to Own the most Expensive Camera either film or digital. Even if you live in San Francisco or New York, and all you do is stay home while people are still not vaccinated and also do not wear a mask, and so what they do is SPREAD their joy by going out the streets, and with a Leica Trying to be the Greatest Shooter.. No I rather use in what I have - Both film, and digital even though my gear is OLD, and as it does the trick. You are paying for the NAME OK, $6000 dollars for the body, and the lenses even twice the cost, and Again owning a Leica to you new comers, Does not mean that you are a Pro, Just a Bragger, and using the Leica for Click Bait... Yea i have seen them at the Leica Galleries in how they would carry one, and does not use it, and how do we know that their is a roll of film inside, as they throw a bunch of lies in Oh I just got back from Costa Rica, and photograph the sunsets - Big Beal We have Sunsets here in San Francisco - If you mind Fog. And if you live in the city by the bay well congrads that you are living here, that people like me Have to save up for RENT, PG&E, and AT&T, and if you drive that is $6.00 at the pump but if you decide to take the MUNI, and wait 20minutes for the bus make sure that you ise that Leica - as the world goes by, and also not to mentioned FOOD. So put the Leica away, and get real.... Oh My gear yes I do shoot both medias, as my film gear are Nikon SLR, and Canon & Contax RF film cameras as they are old how old does the 2nd season of Batman rings a bell, yea Nikon F 3 models - from 1968 to 1969 OK. As for my digital I do not want to spend a thousands of dollars for a 400mm to 800mm to photograph Pigeons making out... My Digital gear is OLD too from 2006, and still working.... Use common sense People, if you want to learn Photography go to a USED Book Store, and get books, and look at them....

Talking of hammers. I used to work on building sites doing carpentry. I used a basic claw hammer with a yellow nylon shaft. Easy to find it. Cost about £8. Perfect. Other carpenters had Estwing hammers. Leather wrapped, beautiful. Cost, £75. The problem. They always got stolen. Same problem with Leica and Hasselblad cameras and Rolex watches. Resale value. Tape the name over, or only work in classy circles. I use my little unassuming Ricoh digital cameras with 28 and 21mm lenses. Very few have even heard of Ricoh. The name is not on the front anyway. The lenses are incredible anr results are amazing. Not cheap, but not sell your kidney expensive as Leicas are.

This is a very valid point and a great anecdote. Those Ricoh cameras are incredible for sure. Definitely more than capable of stacking up with Leica
