I am a long-time professional Nikon shooter. Several years ago, after my back started giving me problems and I couldn't lug around shit-tons of heavy kit, I decided to go mirrorless with a Fujifilm X-T1. I have since upgraded to an X-T4 and, good Lord...it's awesome! My Nikon D850 sits in the closet most of the time. Recently, I got a Leica Q2 and, holy crap...it's simply phenomenal. Will it make you a better photographer? Absolutely not. But, for me, it makes me want to grab it every time I leave the house. For those who don't have the budget, fear not...you will get a very very similar experience with a Fujifilm X100V or an X-T3 or 4. All three of those cameras are an absolute joy to use and you sacrifice almost nothing.

As a long time Leica owner I can really dig your enthousiasm. For my professional work I use Hasselblad most of the time together with Nikon Z (until Profoto supports the SL2). For my personal work it is M and Q2 Monochrome. It is indeed utterly satisfying to create images rather than taking photos. On one thing I have to correct you though. The amount of sharpening of a digital image has nothing to do with the resolution the lens is capable of rendering (‘sharpness’). By nature all digital images need sharpening due to the layout of pixels. That raster pattern creates softness caused by ‘bleeding’ light to adjacent pixels that needs correction (sharpening) in all cameras. Regardless of how sharp the lens is. What Leica does so well, is that they keep sharpening to a minimum. That creates a beautiful natural (almost 3D) look to images, unlike many other brands that aggressively sharpen their images causing them to look very sharp, but quite artificial and flat. Of course the lens quality helps here to create beautiful contrast and the ability to resolve to the limits of the sensor (and beyond). But its mostly the algorithms that make the difference here.

After 20 years of a couple dozen digital cameras, starting with a Kodak DCS620X, I walked away completely and went all in on Leica. The thing that Leica has allowed me to relearn is that through constraint comes creativity and you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. Indeed the Leica is less featured, slower, and not suited to every type of situation, but your wins are 100% yours, as are your failures. No regrets and never going back. I can't speak for prior generations of Leicas as I have never used or owned them, but I do think the sensors on the M10M and M10R and distinctive and a dynamic range that is just jaw dropping. Nice video.

I was incredibly fortunate and someone gifted me an m11 for Christmas. I'm still learning to uit but, from what I've seen so far, post processing is going to be playing a far smaller role in my workflow. I just switch the camera over to high contrast b&w and the photos coming right out of the camera match my intentions behind them flawlessly. It should be said, if you can't afford a Leica and don't have the incredible luck I do, a 35 year old Olympus held together with duct tape and dreams (my daily driver for the first 5 years of my time as a photographer) can work just fine. It's what's behind the camera that matters most, not the camera itself

I've never held a Leica in my hands, so I'll take your word for all this, but the first serious camera I used was a Nikon F3 and I would say the way I felt about it was similar. Everything was intuitive and worked very well, the thing felt solid as a tank and yet balanced in my hands, and we became like an old married couple who understood each other perfectly. The images nearly always came out the way I expected, and I could concentrate on reacting to what I was seeing and trying to convey that. And the "kit lenses" of the day were fast, sharp, well-built primes. I'm not comparing the cameras, but simply saying the way I could work with the camera is a way to grasp what you're saying here.

No Leica M camera will ever be recommended by Consumer Reports. Neither will a Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar, a Bentley automobile, a violin made by Antonio Stradivari or a painting made by Claude Monet. The last thing I want to do is put a plastic camera in my hands and fiddle with buttons and menus. Another brand that I like is Hasselblad, and I have several Hasselblad HC lenses that I use on My Leica S. The results are excellent. When you import your images into LR, you'll appreciate that what comes out of a Leica doesn't need much post processing. In most cases, playing with the sliders makes things worse. In my opinion, go for the best glass and the biggest sensor, or film size. Medium format produces much better images than 35mm. @coasttocoastphotoatl

I totally understand the point of this. Leica is for a niche crowd. I personally would never pay that price for a camera like that, mostly because it doesn’t fit my shooting style. It’s like comparing cars: People would spend an insane amount of money for a classic car, even though most modern cars can do pretty much everything better and more efficiently, and for a fraction of the price. From what I’ve seen, Leicas produce images that fit a very particular style of photography. So for people looking for that style and feel, assuming they have the pockets for it, I can see the benefits. Btw, don’t publicize the fact that your expensive Leica lives in your car. Be careful!

In July 2020 I purchased a M 246 Monochrom with a Voigtlander, 50mm f/1.5. (they always travel in the same bag, no matter where I travel). Used to shoot digital - then got a minolta film camera. And then another, and another. A 30 year old film camera which takes the most beautiful photos. Fits in my tiny hands like it was meant to be. Film forces you to be better. Forces you to think. And no digital camera can duplicate the excitement I feel when I get my developed film back with my shots on a memory stick. I now own 10 film cameras - the youngest is 20yrs old the oldest around 50. I use them all all the time. I get to know them like old friends, and I see my growth as a photographer with each roll I hand in. My Sony Xperia is the greatest piece of tech I have - but I know that every photo I've taken with it, isn't really my own talent or brilliance as all digital cameras are designed and programmed to enhance the end product, whether you are doing. There is no skill in that. And then there is Lightroom and Photoshop... If I had stuck with digital, I would always have been mediocre, always been average. A very good photographer once told me - when I was fretting over my second hand gear compared to his arsenal of mouthwatering Zeiss lenses - that if you have talent and skill, then you don't need a £2k Nikon to show it. At the moment I'm working a Minolta Dynax 505si with Kodak ColorPlus 200 - I'm so in love with this combo and my friends have all asked for prints to hang in their homes and offices. I will never go back to digital.

I’m using Leica M’s for a long time, but I’ve also owned several versions of the X100-range and the X-Pro1 and 2 (and a few other X and GFX cameras). Actually the X-Pro’s are closer to being a poor-mans Leica but in the end it’s more the looks that is similar to Leica than the actual feel and end results. Fuji did a great job with the hybrid viewfinder and the film simulations and they deserve our applaus for being different than most other brands. However, they don’t reach the level of IQ of a Leica. In fact the Fuji raw files are quite cumbersome to edit well, whereas the Leica DNG-files are super easy to process.

Dude you chimping every time you take the photos kinda defeats the purpose of using a leica. Get a mirrorleas and you see your photos right even before you take the shot.

I think everyone has their goldilocks brand. Leica is good - but so are other brands. I actually love hearing why people love their cameras - passion is in such short supply these days that it is always music to my ears ❤️

Stupid opinion. Many of us pros earn 20 to 30k a month with our gear. its a tax deduction as well.

Leica is for the rich and amateurs, definitely it's not for the professionals. Mercedes Benz vs Honda comparison doesn't apply here. Technically and with performance Mercedes Benz is clearly ahead, but Leica nowhere near Nikon, Canon or Sony, Technically, performance and price as well. I don't buy this!!

I come from the Sony I’ve used Hasselblad as well and I switched all my gear to the Leica m10 amd the SL. I say leica will always win no matter what. Leica is very special. Once you pick one up you’ll and use it you’ll understand.

@@mikeyestrada1674 yes, mate, i have a leica m8, r6 and an iq4, no way am i ever gonna give up my iq4, the leica is just the experience, yeah it's cool and all but what more? The r6 with a 70-200 kills it in terms of image quality and my iq4 is a much more pleasureable experience, you can say all you want but to me, leica is just a gimmick, for those who want to "look rich", like, it is not pratical, not reasonable and definitely not a great camera for anything other than feel and show-off.

Oracle Testlab, you are wrong about professional photographers not using Leica M cameras and lenses. Magnum photo agency is the pinnacle of professional documentary photography. The hundred or so Magnum photographers who are currently active are the best of the best in the entire world, bar none. Since Magnum's founding in April of 1947, easily 90-95% of Magnum photographers have used Leica M cameras and lenses. Photographers like Eve Arnold, Werner Bischof, René Burri, Magnum founder Henri Cartier-Bresson, Bruce Davidson, Elliott Erwitt, Jean Gaumy, Bruce Gilden, Thomas Hoepker, Conatantine Manos, Sebastião Salgado, Nick Ut and Alex Webb have shot with and continue to shoot with Leica M cameras and lenses. Peter and David Turnley have put many thousands of rolls of film through their film Leicas and continue to shoot with Leica digital M cameras to this day. Google search any of these titans of photography and you will see that Leica M cameras are very much alive in the world of professional photography.

I've watched 1 minute and 10 sec of this video and stopped to write a comment and probably won't be continuing watching. Why? Because I am not going to listen to somebody who being alone, outside, in open air ... wears a face mask. I do not intend to offend anybody, just to make it clear, but if somebody is not able to apply some basic logic, some common sense into life... sorry Gregory.... Coming back to leica, and rangefinders.. never had one, but have similar style camera, GX8 by Panasonic. I can say, they are not the best cameras to operate in busy environment. Proper, bigger DSLR feels much better in hand in my opinion. Some cameras seem to be designed to some type of work. In all other fields that fail. That's my 2 cents, anyway. Image quality? Are they so outstanding, if they are at all? It'a a matter of taste of the person who judges the work, so we can not generalize.

@@deantaylor1512 Indeed. Troubled times. Breathing through the mask can give you a lot of trouble. If not now, in the coming future. Your health, your thing. God bless.

Erm mate - he's in South Africa where its currently illegal - yes illegal - to leave your home without a mask. He has no choice as he can be sent to prison for not wearing one. He's not being PC - the ANC government also bannec the sale of alcohol and cigarettes during their first lockdown, as well as the sale of any non-essential items - you could not buy a bucket or a mop! They had a curfew and police shot and killed people who broke curfew. Just think before you type...
