It's a game of two halves. One is a very fun standard JRPG, the other is a fantastic meditation on what being immortal would be like. The short stories are some of the best things I've ever read. If nothing else, people should read them.

Fantastic video man! I felt the same about the game which is why I never finished it. Really want to give it another chance though. What I loved is how dynamic and natural the dialogue feels. Really unique for a video game.

I agree with you on basically all fronts here; I had a very similar experience finally playing through it this year, and feeling at once nostalgic and enraptured by a new JRPG experience that was unmistakably Sakaguchi. And I also made the Palom and Porom connection to Mack and Cooke, very nearly down to their respective roles as mages save taking the more buff/debuff focused spirit magic for Mack. Gongora was goofy in a way that didn't serve the story, and I felt they spent a little too much screen time on him "behind the scenes" manipulating very stupid people when there could have been a bit more mystery to him. A Thousand Years of Dreams more than makes up for it though; however, I do wish they would have spread the dreams out a little more evenly, because there were more than a couple times I encountered several in quick sequence and felt bogged down reading them all while trying to remember what the hell it was I needed to buy in town. And yes, Jansen gave me several laugh-out-loud moments; his English VA killed that role, and it was great to see him occasionally drop his humor shield and have vulnerable moments with some of the cast. Some characters needed some more attention, probably Sarah most of all. Overall an excellent game and a worthy must-play for JRPG fans, if they can get a hold of it while it's marooned on a nearly 20 year old console. Did you tackle the post-game content, like the Temple of Enlightenment or the Backyard's ridiculous final challenge? I found those where the places where you really had to strategize and think on your feet, and as the last things I tackled, it made for a thrilling challenge to close out the game.
@ErekLadd2 ай бұрын
I didn't do any post game content. I did grind at the temple of enlightenment until most of my party was about level 60 before I tackled the final dungeon, but that's about it. Once I got to that point in the game I was ready to finish it up and move on 🤣

I’ve just started this, got a discount with my game pass. I’m so pulled into the world and love the combat, music and story. I sourced a strategy guide off Vinted. It’s a beautiful game with some frustrating mini games and segments but it’s of its time. Immortal memories have some dreamy tear jerkers.

This game is absolutely off the hook 😊- I came across it looking for another game like Dragon Quest 11 and it popped up in my search; so glad I indulged. If you are a fan of turn-based JRPGs it’s hands down a must grab. It aged perfectly 😊

I had the exact same thoughts/takeaways Erek! I appreciated the game more than I actually *loved* the game, and ultimately I never actually finished it because it didn't connect with me beyond the battle system and short stories. I really want to give it a full playthrough sometime though =)

When I originally played it when it came out I was loving it. Disk 2 I put it down at the time. The pacing alittle rough. Picked it back up a few years later and I’m glad I did. My biggest gripe is the main villain. Kindof lame in my opinion. Overall a great game and it needs to be on more platforms

If only the game had a better villain the story might have been more compelling IMO.

Maybe my tastes are too ‘Western,’ but the character designs kept me from playing this game. It reminds me of FFXII, which became one of my favorites in the series once I got over the character designs. Like you I'm playing 360 jrpgs I've missed out on and will give this game a shot.
@ErekLadd2 ай бұрын
I understand what you mean about the designs. I didn't mind it as much. I think it's just the specific art style they went with, it's not my favorite thing ever but I didn't mind the game. Def give it a try!

@ErekLadd2 ай бұрын
Yeah, the stories were really so good for me. I didn't mind the ring system as much, honestly I just picked whatever I thought best for each character and left it on for the majority of the game. I didn't even know you could change equipment mid-battle until disc 4.. haha.
