Your video is refreshing. Feed up of ‘Influencers’ buying and buying new luxury items and not using what they already have. The regular person will save for a bag etc and actually use it not move onto the next thing.

Loving how self assured you are Eva! Also love how open and vulnerable you’ve remained throughout this journey; that’s no easy feat. We live in a time of mass consumption and hopefully globally we can start to reckon with that. The way we’re operating now is not sustainable to the planet, the workers making these items or to people’s financial security. It might sound pretentious but when I shop I like to think that I’m curating my wardrobe. Makes it sound much more glamorous than it actually is but it allows me to more easily say “no” to items that I know have no place in my personal collection! Keep up the good work Eva and keep walking your own path!

Brilliant video Eva! I agree quality isn't always in the higher price tag I have found! And I love a lot of Scandinavian clothing brands still expensive but look quite unique! I have loved these kind of brands for years! So that's my preferance when buying 'expensive clothes' bags I have sold nearly all mine but still feel I want a chanel back in my life (the reissue) but I do think although Chanel is rediculous prices these days (I paid £900 for my first black classic medium around the early 2000 and now what they are asking is shocking! And I dare say although they are more expensive they almost look cheaper! As when I bought mine nobody in my area had one now I see heaps of people with them and that puts me off buying!) I am kind off obsessed with Celine just now although don't own any! And I agree you can be into a brand and not own anything! Before I bought my Chanel bag I used to have a chanel book and would buy jewellery similar to the books (not copys or fakes ) and I would do the monochrome thing etc! So yeah sorry for the huge comment!just find your videos so positive!!x

Life's a journey isn't it, Eva, and as we mature different things become priority. From the age of 18 I loved the mulberry brand , but I was a very poorly paid nurse and couldn't afford or justify the cost . As I got older, buying a home, holidays and then children became priority . I've had cancer twice and finally aged 46 I saw a preloved mulberry on eBay that was one of the earlier styles in really thick Darwin leather, it was about £100 and I thought - go on! I loved that bag but it started a 2 yr period of what I now view as madness , lol. I joined a couple of Facebook mulberry sales groups and went on a silly spiral of buying and selling bags . I came to my senses about a year ago - my financial circumstances changed and I couldn't afford to have money tied up in bags . The new mulberry styles are dreadful quality, but I have a few older mulberry bags and a few Coach that are wonderful quality , suit my lifestyle - and get used . My car takes up a lot of my income, as I have a child with special needs and a grandson . Where I live on the outskirts of London in Essex a car is so important, especially as I have 2 part time jobs and am dashing from one to the other ! I love watching luxury hauls, but I do feel sick when I see some of the excesses on some KZbin channels - I've unsubbed from a few because it's all the youtuber does. I love your channel - the travel and London vlogs are so good!

Great conversation, it was very honest and illuminating. I think that the rise in luxury fashion has led to decrease in quality of the items, especially in 'luxury' handbags. I live in Switzerland and there are so many small, luxury brands here with a much higher quality than LV or Chanel. LV, Chanel, Valentino bags are very beautiful and come from a great heritage but more and more it is just a status symbol. Tumi or Aspinals have a much higher quality for the price of the bag. I know of a watchmaker from Rolex (it takes a year for him to make one watch) and he was complaining because very wealthy clients from the middle east would come and buy 10 and not really care about the craftsmanship it takes to produce the watch. When it comes to luxury fashion, a lot of it comes down to the client's mindset about it.

Awesome video! I shop vintage luxury peices, as well as, thrift shops. I find they are more my style. I love the Boho/hippy/ Vintage look. I feel more myself when I wear these. I got a chanel flap bag vintage that was on sale for under 900 pounds just because the colors weren't in style anymore but, it fit my style perfect. I also like vintage because I find the stuff is better quality then stuff is now. Things were built to last. I agree, Luxury to me means something that I will use for years to come. Luxury is quality over quantity. I am guilty of making mindless purchases/over shopping and this video really helps put things into perspective. Thank you!

Loved this video and agree with the theme and ideas. Re-defining luxury to mean those things which you will use , will bring you joy and last . I think having a minimal approach can sit alongside purchasing 'expensive' items if you consider your purchases and invest time in considering how you are going to use it and what you want to achieve by purchasing it.

Great video for the start of the New Year👍🏽 I also got caught up in the Luxury brand whirlwind and forgot what my mother taught me which was to buy the best quality you can afford at the time. When we’re young and just starting out we have different priorities, education, new living arrangements, travel, new jobs. As we age and we have families and homes to care for our financial priorities change. When the kids are gone we focus on ourselves again, so more of our spending can be on luxury & self-care, travel, etc. So yes, by all means buy luxury if they are the best quality for the money great, don’t fall for junk fashion. If you can buy things that have the test of time (Hermès, Goyard, Chanel) and can afford it awesome. But spending for spendings sake is wasteful and unfulfilling. Shop your closet more, get your cost per wear.❤️😘🙏🏽

Such great insight and so eloquently put! After doing a complete overhaul of my wardrobe and getting rid of most of my clothes, I'm trying to build a small wardrobe of quality items I love, even if it costs a bit more than what I use to spend. It can feel limiting to shop though when trying to find pieces where my style, quality of the item, and what I'm willing to spend intersects. I think it would be a really interesting video to hear your thoughts on how you curate your wardrobe and your thought process on when and how you decide to add in new pieces.

Great video! I went through the same "phases" as you from luxury to minimalism (which in my opinion does not exclude luxury items that you own) and to now more conscious shopping, questioning the ethical side of an item from sourcing to production when buying something new (ideally second hand). I for example loved everything cashmere but now know, that it is everything but environmentally friendly etc. also stopped buying puffer coats/jackets with down, etc.. I think it's just part of evolving, growing and realizing what's truly important in life and that's great! Thank you!

I'm definitely quality over quantity and I do prefer designer because of that. I do agree that quality isn't always in the higher price tag but most of the time it is. Recently my husband and I have moved from London to Stockholm and I could immediately tell the difference in the mentality and how people shop. Here in Scandinavia people are way more conscious about how and where they spend, not necessarily because they can't afford something, they just prefer to lead a so-called 'lagom' lifestyle - not too little, not too much, just the right amount. I have to say this approach definitely resonates with me and I'm loving it. Talking about fashion, I've already discovered quite a few great Swedish brands - Eytys, Filippa K, Rodebjer, Dagmar, Hope, Whyred - to name a few. Not to mention my favourite perfume houses such as Byredo and Agonist which are also Swedish🙂

I work at a large financial institution in NYC and I always take note of what our executive women wear and carry and I can’t recall seeing any of them carrying true luxury items. Maybe the occasional Hermès scarf, but most who are make a point of carrying bags like Kate Spade and Tory Burch. My guess is they want to be careful of the message they send to clients. It’s the younger and/or lower ranked women who are paid far less who carry luxury goods. Even our CEO made a point of showing off his USD $95 Allbirds shoes during speech. It makes me hesitate investing in a luxury handbag because of what it might say about me in an elevator should I encounter an executive.

Great video! I agree with a lot of your ideas. I refer to MK, Coach, Tory Burch as commercial luxury. I bought my first LV piece last July off Fashionphile. I compared it too my MK Tote, I got for $100 at TJ Maxx. The LV was not that old, maybe 6 years, a delightful MM. I found the MK canvas to be better quality. I have since bought a LV pochette accessories, and love and admire many bags, but nothing seems worth it. I think I like the LV monogram print over the MK print. I always say it looks like a bad text conversation MK MK MK mmm k... I feel like if MK was the high end luxuary over LV. I would choose the $200 LV, just because I like their canvas prints more. I would really like a Speedy 30 B, but new it's like $1.8k and used isn't saving that much. I always find it weird when people brag or whatever, about saving $300 on a bag, slg, etc. For me personally, is saving $300 so great when your buying a $4,000 handbag? At that point of spending, does it even matter? I know people say every little bit helps, but when you're spending so much, $300 is basically close to your tax.

Couldn’t agree better with this topic. I was also questioning myself about luxury/minimalism. I am no minimalist but I like to think about what I purchase and think about the cost per wear, is it worth it, is it gonna add something different in my wardrobe, is it timeless, suitable to my lifestyle and my look for many years to come. I like handbags but having 20 bags in rotation in my closet feels just weird. So I have 4 or 5 bags, some of them are 10 years old (bought or been gifted to me when I was 20 something) and they still look nice, chic and timeless. So yes quality over quantity. I am eyeing your former reissue and it’s on my buy list. But buying a Chanel bag is something I look forward to since I am 5 and I know it will never be out of style. And since the quality seems to be there, might as well splurge for this. This said, buying a bag like you said also should mean being in control over your finances which I am. No way I would use my savings (meant to be saved) for my bag. I would rather save longer and have that balance between my savings and my shopping budget. And if I want something as expensive as a Chanel bag, that just means I have to wait a bit longer so I can keep on saving for both my no-touch money and my shopping budget. Anyhow, super video @evainthecity as always. Cheers ;)

I love luxury but not always the prices, and luxury does not always means quality. Over the years I have heard youtubers complain about the quality of well known brands, and yet they charge so much money for their items. I never use to be into Hermes but they have a aspect of their brand called the Petit h range, this part of the brand uses left over materials to make unique and at times less expensive items. This means that materials can be re-used and they are not wasted. They also use unknown artists to created unique and limited pieces. Some of which are much more affordable than the regular items. I have added 3 of these items to my collection and I am planning to buy a bag from the regular range to use as my work bag. After that maybe two or three more items but at a later stage as they are not a priority.

Agree with everything you have said Eva! Great video....how about doing a video on how to stop spending and start saving and keep focused on that. I know quite a few that buy just to buy or because EVERYONE else is buying that item so they think they need it to. Most say they do not go into debt buying luxury goods, but for the most part I do not know how they buy thousands a month on such things without going into debt. Thanks Eva

Totally agree with everything you've said. In terms of luxury I always said I want 3 luxury handbags to stay with me forever but mayve I can cut it down to 2. This will mean I won't buy anything other bag ever and would have to sell one of them before getting a new one. I'm all about this minimalist life. I want to get to a point where I know where everything is and I'll only have stuff that I use or at least look at you know. I find that the less stuff I have the happier I am. Funny isn't it? Space is so important to me and the more I have it the more I can concentrate. I also want to get down to max 10 pairs of shoes coz I do have a problem 😅. In terms of bags I definitely want the chanel classic flap even though the price is ridiculous so maybe one can dream and then 1 or 2 pieces from lv but as you said the quality has gone down which is such a shame. Debating whether to keep my palm springs mini atm. Anyways going off on a tangent here so just wanted to say great video!!!

Hello from Portugal! First of all, really love your videos, they are very enlightening and you are very fashionable! :) About your question, i value quality over quantity, but i never bought luxury products. I think of them as out of my reach, and also, i buy second hand for about 20 years, and find that most of the older clothes are much more resistent than the ones that are sold now. I'm not talking second hand luxury, just second hand of some anonymous tailor or of some brand i 've never heard of. Some of the clothes that were my grandmother's are also still holding strong. :) I'm sorry for any grammatical or other language related mistake. Keep up the good work!! Beijinhos*

LV vintage is the only way I go. It’s to bad because I love there classics and there epi is my favourite. Not worth spending 2 to 3 thousand on a bag that comes apart and my 30 year old bags from the 90’s don’t have much wear. Very good when I started buying LV when I was 55 I was very happy because all my life I always wanted a speedy 30 but I am even more happy that my current bags are all vintage and with LV that would be the only way to go.

Great video. For me I (like you) have a very minimalist style. I think I see value in different brands, but I just seem to go back to basics. For example Im all about the basic t shirts, hoodies, cardigans, bombers, etc. For brands I pretty much stick to uniqlo. Also everything I wear is very monochromatic. Mostly just gray, black, white. With shoes though, I go all in. I love my minimalist luxury leather sneakers i.e. common projects. I would definitely say most designer brands have gone down in value, and more than likely you can get them at outlet malls, or even thrift stores. I do have a coach wallet that I got at the outlet mall for 40 bucks. I think it's worth that, but nah I'd personally stay away from fast fashion designer brands.

Really interesting vlog. I am doing a no spend challenge this year. Mainly to analyse why I buy something. I have lots of clothes that I'm really happy with too. I watched a vlog recently made by a minimalist blogger. In it they look at the need for buying stuff kind of stems from the hunter in us to get food. So I'm aware of that when I go 'shopping' remembering that as long as I buy food I need then it's ok. Plus the fact the planet resources are running out and we have to be mindful of that. With regards to brands I think Hermes is still a brand that creates goods that are made to the highest standard by artisan creators. Brands that are more fashion orientated and will produce goods that sell, but I can't stand the latest it bag fascination. Instagram has had a lot to answer for.

Oooh Eva, love your eye brows! What's on them? I've also loved seeing your evolution throughout the years, I still love your channel to this day. Your video is interesting. The experience is definitely psychological and can have meaning to us. In that light I realise how luxury shopping could be rewarding, but I'm still struggling. I had to redo my entire wardrobe this autumn because I halved my weight, and I really had to rethink what I wanted from clothes shopping and what I wanted to invest in. I noticed that you can have a status piece but that in general, affordable pieces put together with a curated style will make you look more put together than a designer bag ever will. I believe you can look chic at any price point, the only issue is how long what you buy will last. And this brings me to your point on quality... A friend of mine was complaining about buying coats every year that she would throw out. She bought a designer coat this winter for 400 euro (as opposed to the 50 euro I put in my Bershka coat), and now both our coats are equally fluffing. Have you ever experienced this? Have you had a winter coat you didn't have this experience with? I am so confused. ;___; Enjoy your Sunday, hugs.

@@alexlibris9591 Hey Alex, I might know a brand you could be interested in. I bought a 100% wool coat from saint james in october, since then I've worn it on a daily basis and so far no flufffing/pilling. It seems like the wool is even water-repellent. Although it was quite pricy (380€), in my opinion it's definitely worth the money. I'm not sure how cold it gets where you live, but in germany it usually doesn't drop below -5° and with a warm sweater underneath it's still warm enough. On those rare days where it's even colder I just layer the coat with a thin down jacket underneath. Hope that helps you! :) The mentioned coat: www.saint-james.com/eu/atelier-collection-clothing/voilure-reefer-jacket-with-tailored-neckline-100-wool.html

This is a tough one. I wonder if a part of the reason why you've fallen out of love with luxury shopping (my words not yours, I hope I've characterized your perspective fairly) is just because you're growing up and in another phase of life. Like I wonder if it would be the same for you if you'd had another hobby as a younger adult, like going to live music concerts for example, but then you just kind of grew out of it. I only say that because I don't really know any luxury shopper who truly believes it's a quality over quantity issue. Most of us readily admit a leather handbag is a leather handbag and the rest of what we're paying for is branding. Which I agree is pervasive and concerning.
