Is Mabinogi REALLY a dead MMO?

I really appreciate everyone coming through with their thoughts on this topic in the comments. I want you to know I'm reading all of them, some of you have some strong opinions on the future of the game and I respect them.

Going by the auction houses numbers theres about 2000 people on at any given time on nao it some times goes up but that requires a good event and that is purely based on the auction house alone

As someone who plays MMO's more than single player games, I always compare Mabi to other games. FF14? They added RP missions in their second expansion and I basically yelled in excitement over it. Play Dead emote was added, too. But you obviously don't fling off the side of the screen-- When my friends die in game, I sit on their corpse. I have all these habits still ingrained in my system. Can't log in as a pet in other games, you can't swap weapons and have a new, nearly 2 hotbars worth of skills to use. Most things in Mabi are just there and in others, it's an add-on, a 3rd party program. I can rant for hours about how much Mabi, to me, is more amazing than WoW or FFXIV. I honestly hope that the new Mabi "mobile" will come to PC and revitalize the community.

Mabinogi mobile has been available in Chinese language for years. It is like the same game with swapped out better 3d models, except there are ways to automate play. You can set your character to automatically fight and run throught dungeons. So the combat is sort of ruined.

I actually miss the whole sun and moon gate system, and I miss starting out as elf in the desert somehow trying to find my wat to Dunbarton (which was fairly new when I started playing) I also miss my dead bird eagle which I deleted because I didn't know I could heal him, and I miss looking all over mabi to gather pices of paper for magic spells, and gathering herbs for potions

as someone whos bin around since the CBT, this game has had its ups and downs in its popularity. on nao server alone i can see atlest 30 people on the weekends doing avalon raids, and i know this is like a 10th of the active community(not talking about alts here, single individuals who actually do stuff). infact ive bin seeing more new players trying out the game lately. im just waiting for a couple more of the agregious issues to finnaly get adressed in NA mabi to start recommending mabi again(reforges is the major, and erg progression is secondary for me atm)

This game is possibly the best mmo i've played. The battle system, the open world, the stories, the rp, the social aspect! Everything about this game is somehow exactly what I think of when people say good mechanics.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. While I can hate on Nexon, for alot of things, I cant hate on DevCat for just what they've done with this game. The only mmo truly like this out there is FFXIV. Which is a shame, really. If more mmo's out there were like this, I could see a very big resurgence for the MMO genre.

I've played Mabi on and off for many a year now, and regardless of when, I always find myself atleast thinking about it and coming back to it. Just started playing again this past month or so. It's like catching up with an old friend, even if none of my current friends have any interest in it. I'd say it's probably more alive than it's felt for a long time, it's just that it feels dead because of it's niche-ness making it so not everyone you know is playing it, unlike more popular, flashier games like say, Genshin.

It may not be dead, but I swear if they put me on the design team it would be far more engaging. No/reduce afk events Better balance with classes Expanding missions in the open world Pretty clothing to craft More mini games like Mafia!!!! Maybe even consider taking away the level system and only making skill training the goal since it's such a massive gap But most importantly, merging Alexina with the other servers would have made the population feel better then the old days

Mabinogi is dead. They only keep it alive because they refuse to let it die. They do their best to keep people, but they shut down two of the servers because the player base had dropped so much and migrated everyone over to the two servers. And now that same problem is happening again and people are calling for the two remaining servers to get merged. The player base keeps dropping and Mabinogi flatout doesn't seem to want to do anything about it. They keep trying to do flashy stories, but a lot of these flashy stories they're doing require people to be at such ridiculous levels that even me, being over 15K total level can't keep up with what they want. You have people with 2K stats these days and honestly I don't even know where half of those stats come from because I've mastered so many skillsets and gotten almost all the skills upgraded to the point that I should be at as high a level as I can be. And when I went to the devs to ask why I wasn't as powerful as these 4K total level people that were hitting WAY harder than me with stats way beyond mine, the devs said that there was nothing wrong with my stats or my profile but couldn't explain to me why my character was so weak in comparison.

Hi, if you need help with how stats work in Mabinogi, there's a lot of great resources for it. Try joining the official discord or checking out the wiki. It's likely the players you saw where chain users with a dex focus.

I have chain slash trained and maxed out, even have a decent reforged chain slash weapon. That's not the reason. Trust me, I did the research, as well as went to the devs themselves. No one seems able to explain why my character is so weak compared to where it should be given my very high level. That's why I gave up, because no one, not even the devs, can explain why my character is so weak. Back when I stopped playing the first time, I was at a pretty high level, and above a lot of the people playing the game. Now, I can barely keep up with people who are really low level compared to me even though I managed to catch up (through special training events like the summer and winter 2X Exp events) and train stuff like chain slash and ninja despite not having them fully trained before. I grandmastered almost every skillset up to G23, and even maxed out the training of the Alban Knight skills. And even doing that, people of much lower level still have much higher stats than me. I do know part of the problem is that my equipment is a little lacking. I don't have the G23 onward super equipment you get from the Tech Duinn missions. By the time I started playing again, no one is doing those missions, and those that do only play the missions with people they know. No one would help me even though I tried to get help. At this point, I just can't do anything more in the game. My character's growth is negligible at best, and even if I train the new skillsets that have been released, my growth would not be good enough to finish the generations I got stuck on because my stats just aren't high enough.

I used to play this game back in the late 00's. And you are correct about graphics. As far as I'm concerned, aesthetics >>>>> graphics. A game can have low graphical design but still be fun and pleasant to look at. If I don't like looking at the game, how can you expect me to want to play it?

The game aient dead. If it were, It would not still be updated. Nexon likes money. If it does not make money, it goes bye bye. Mabinogi and Maple Story are still around. This shows they are making enough money to matter to Nexon. Mabi.... I love old-school Mabi. I was in the Era of g1- g12. I respect new-school Mabi. It had more content and features than the old game, but it still retains the feel of the old days. They have problems like pay to win and power creep. But, I feel the game is still growing. It has more content than the game I used to play, for sure. I hope the mobile/pc version they are working on gains support. I want this great game to continue into the future.

I think what you spoke about from 3:10 to 3:50 is actually the reason why people might consider it dead. It's not at all that there weren't enough updates. I think it's the contrary. The game has gone through so many changes that took the challenges that made it original out of the picture. The moon gate system was unique and made you really have to plan/time your adventures right. The ideals were fun, and were part of getting to know the characters in the game and the storyline in general! The spice of being an archer was the risk of missing! I do think that some of the updates like free rebirths and the dungeon revamps were good, but they need to continue focusing on improving the old generational content before coming out with boatloads of new skills and features - a lot of which were p2w, creating a HUGE gap between new players and endgame players.

for me, it's the time zone, the community(all my friends has quit), reforges(inaccessible unless you spend money), skill training(I can't even rank enchant without spending adventure seals?), for me it's just all a chore to do. Avalon raids are only active for a short amount of time. The power difference between the whales and the F2P players is a joke.

Mabinogi isn't really "dead." It WILL be dead once Nexon considers that it costs more to maintain the game than the gacha/reforges selling in the game. Not going to lie due to Nexon's mismanagement of this game it's just now implementing changes and updates to existing features like dungeons and shadow missions instead of fixing it a decade ago. Imagine having consistent monthly (1-2 months) updates and fixes instead of prioritizing profits from this shitty ass company. This game would have a large following, but ultimately Nexon cares about one thing and that is to milk everyone's money. Now they're trying to get people back into the game with Soul Streamers/Influencers, which is honestly going to be an uphill battle. I placed my hopes on New World online from Mabinogi and I was not disappointed. In New World, guilds can take over land and rule over it. As a 70k total player from Mabinogi, I will no longer look back and hope some other company or publisher takes Mabinogi instead. Fuck you Nexon for ruining this game and just realizing that your player base is dwindling because of the mismanagement.

Mabinogi was one of my go to games along with Maplestory I vividly remember playing Mabinogi constanly around 2007-2009. My pc started to dwindled around 2012 then I stop playing nexon games and went on a hiatus from mmorpg games.

I don't think in Mabinogi's case a graphical upgrade is an easy thing to approach. I think its worth trying but in a weird way, the games look is more than just dated, its a unique visual aesthetic. I will say the other servers have been slowly rolling out small visual changes, like blinking, hand redesigns ( soon? ) among other things. But a complete graphical overhaul runs the risk of the game losing perhaps the last few things that set it apart from the ever growing list of competitors. I think the best we can expect are more minimal changes and maybe new models in the same way giants got revamped.

its dead to me particularly. i played since 2011. everyday dunbarton and tir was always packed with evgers, duels, groups talking to eachother etc. nowadays everyone is afk, no evg, dueling is way less popular, and not many do activities together. with all the updates since i played, i feel its a different game now.

They used to make and release trailers and I used to see banners and so on, we have had none of that for years, so no wonder people have to stumble into this game instead of seeing a trailer or similar. Nao server for sure is the most populated atm. Mostly due to the previous ones being merged. I personally kick it on Alexina from time to time. The official discord and the reddit are great places to connect with people if you're looking for some friendly faces. 😀

Now, if only system requirements didn't go up. I used to play all the time, but my computer struggled to run it at first, until I turned off post-processing effects, then it ran okay. But now, even with settings as optimized as possible, my computer simply can't run it anymore.

Mabinogi is a dead game because it lost its soul. The combat is now spamming whatever is OP at the time instead of the innovative rock paper scissor combat it had at the launch. Moon gates, while extremely convenient, makes the paths between destinations lifeless and void of any players. Events are sparse, while being either afk-friendly or worthless. It's fun to walk through Dunbarton and see tons of people but no chatter. The worst offender however, is that fashion has evolved so much that 99.9% of clothes sold by NPC'S are garbage. Guess where all the good clothes are? In boxes where you almost literally burn your money for trash or the auction house where everything is extremely overpriced. Also, pets are in loot boxes now? Sheesh. Mabinogi is extremely reliant on loot boxes now instead of offering fair deals like purchasing outfits directly like they used to offer. I loved Mabinogi as a closed beta tester but I refuse to play it anymore. It died and became a zombie obsessed with money. I don't want to see Mabinogi in that state.

You can play as a pet forever, just use Fynn Sync and fuse all your pets that have timers into one, up to 23 hours max. On average 1 pet starts with 90 minutes or more, so it just takes maybe 9 to 10 fusion and you have enough duration to keep them up the entire time. Fynn Sync is overpowered for general pet usage, you can farm a lot of purple or red gems mobs drop and give them to other character alts on your account and mass produce pet whistles and sell them (whistles can be traded, the gems not). A lahgodessa spider in a dungeon isn't hard to kill for an intermediate player.

bit late answering but. is it dead.....idk i return time to time, and i'm happy its always there for me to return to. this game IS my childhood and teen years. and honestly one of my biggest fears, is it will go down someday and i wont be able to replay the story (gen1-3 are my golden stories) heck thats one reason i keep suggesting they make an offline version just in case (i'd buy it full price if mabi ever goes down) so the fact its there for me to return to, i guess means its alive still. there to welcome me back but....its certainly not the game i remember, mostly cause the people who made it the game arent there. all my old friends. still in a guild with them, and its rare to see them in the short times i return. but they feel the same, that "15 weeks since offline" is rare, usually members always have a 3 days, or 3 weeks. or so on. they all return time to time.

Oh, man. This game takes me back to 2009-2014. I had so much fun playing playing my friends, sadly we all gradually quit and went onto other games. I did login like 2 years ago just to reminisce. Mabinogi is a fun game. I think the graphics keep most people away, imo. It needs a reboot or something.

played for 7 years, decided to stop last year and played ffxiv. Though i often find myself reminiscing on mabi, many updates that served as talent fixes were behind heavy grind walls and ptw reforges. After getting tired of rewardless dungeon spams and alt grinding for event stuff to make gold, i kinda left burntout and went for something more simple and skill-based. But mabis talent designs are so much fun! puppetry, alch, chains, dual guns etc creating some fun combos to play around, nothing other game ive seen gets even close to that. Now i look at ffxiv and sometimes think thats what mabi might look like if it got really popular, the friendly community, less grind but more content for every player type, skill fixes that didnt require grinding, simple combat reward and gearing systems and so on

The difference? You can finish FF14 in 6 months. Still working on my 10 year old char in Mabi. I agree that might be an advantage and not a disadvantage for most gamers, though. None of us are suddenly gaining more free time now.

@@Paxseko im not quite sure what youre talking about but im sure you didnt play ff14/not enough to reach any side content. The "6 months" to "finish" ff14 is simply the fundamental basics of a storyline, like just finishing all the generations in mabi and nothing else. Theres much more content than the main story quests and theyre also more engaging compared to the endless dungeon/sidhe/tech/kraken farming with a abysmal chance of getting the stuff you need and then the floating numbers of crafting and enchanting it in mabi. ff14 also has a much lower requirement to participate in high end content, reach end game, and is more skill based than gear based. What my from my previous post is, I love mabis combat system design but the grindy and gear based content and the lack of ppl has made me lost interest over the years. so sometimes when i play ff14 and notice the many shining points of it, i kinda think that mabi would be like that if it was super popular

Now it feels like a dead wasteland, people are on. but no one talks, their all doing their own thing. Its definitely a lot more peaceful then what it used to be. So I have what's probably an unpopular opinion. I actually think removing ideals wasn't ideal for Mabinogi as an MMO. Maybe as a game, yes, but what removing ideals did, as well as quite a few other changes they made over the years, was remove a lot of the need for lower and higher level players to interact- or really, the need for interaction at most levels. Changing the need for both low and high level player interaction, and really interaction overall, kind of removes the whole point of Mabi being an MMO to me. Like... I lost the need to really interact with newbies and help them with so many of the things I really loved to be able to help with. And honestly, being able to just run ideals, or RP dungeons, or Glas or whatever with people just to screw around with the game was one of the most fun things for me. Or yanno, maybe I'm just old and I guess never really understood the new Mabi whenever I can back to it lol

"Back in the day~" Man.. I used to play Mabi. I think it was the longest mmo I ever played (6-8 years), but haven't played it in a very long time now. (was on the Tarlach server) I picked up Mabinogi back in the first day/release of the open beta. Back then there was just Tir, and I recall participating in the first event (a player race on foot). Interesting to see this mmo still has an active playerbase. I ended up no longer playing, cause of the lack of friends/community I had from the game. Lots of friends left the game over time, and I grew more and more anti-social from the rest of the community for reasons that are too long to explain here.

It's dead to me. I don't want to run dungeons for money or dumb items I want to run them for fun. Every little thing feels like you have to BRIBE someone to play with you or turn it into a matter of "Make it Elite or GTFO". ... And that's only if you can actually find someone who actually plays. And I don't mean the 'computers' permanently logged in to sleep on channel 1. If that's what counts as 'alive' then I might as well play Lucent Heart today on October 16th 2021 with that game's permanently absent market-channel-sleeper-accounts and 100% empty battle terrain

As a casual player myself, I feel you on the hard mode or no go but I also see it being indicative of another issue, if it could even be called that. Since a lot of the older players have such high stats, some people will literally steam roll mobs on lower dif. personally, I'd like to see more creative missions like SCC and Provo. With the newest updates some of these missions are leaning in that direction and I am hopeful that in time more of the newer players will warm up to running content with folks.

Unfortunately not an easy question for me to answer, its my understanding though that as long as you are under a certain total level, the base plot is doable without too much of a grind. I cant speak for the Divine knights. The Shakespeare questline is super doable!! ( and one of my favorites ) I'd personally drop a word on the reddit or discord to link up a guild of experienced players. There's no shortage of people looking to help new players through the story. :)

You can do the story up until G18. After that, if you’re not near a certain level. Don’t even bother, lol. You won’t even finish them. Boss and mini-boss fights after G18 are extremely hard. Mostly because you have to fight enemies that are sponges with no knock-back.

It's been years since I was last able to play, due to no laptop/computer that could run it. I would be so sad to hear that it was dead, if that were true (to me it either means it was shut down or barely anyone played). Because this was the one main game on my mind I couldn't wait to get back into. Here I am finally able to play again. ^-^ So much to catch up on and remember. I miss playing Mabi I stopped around 10k ttl like 4 years ago, back then that was a high level. When I went back on the server to see what was new ttl level 10k is the new noob level lmao there is like level 100ks running around it’s ridiculous! If you didn’t play every single day like those who persevered through the game you’re kinda left in the dust with nothing to do 😪 I miss those old days though but nothing ever changed too much to keep me interested and all my old friends who played all quit as well 😩 Still love the channel tho bro haha I used to play with you too back then Crimzonflame was the name, hope you are well 🙏🏽 I was the pvp elf guy 😂 RIP MABI

I played this game from 2008 to 2019. Made some very fond memories in the game, but at the end of the day the power creep and the obscene amounts of money you have dump into the game became too much for me. I still go back to the game every 2 or 3 months but I doubt I'll ever play it as often as I did back in the day

Man, after looking at everything and playing for a bit online I wished I had stable Internet. It seems nice but being in basically a swamp town doesn't allow for the most stable connection with data. And that mobile version just looks perfect but guess have to wait till whatever time perfection sets in.

I personally can't speak to if Mabinogi is dead or not. What I can speak to is why a game should only be considered dead if there is no community for it. Some counter examples for updates defining the death of a game might be the PC StarWars games. Despite the lack of official updates or first party servers, many of the more popular Star Wars games still have active online communities with unofficial patches and community hosted servers. I would claim that those games are alive and well. I think that first party support vanishing is more so a cause of a video game dying rather than the actual death itself. I think popularity tends to lump in with the community, though I dont think it is particularly important for the survival/growth of a game.

I used to play mabinogi.what did they do to it? They ruined it. It used have more of medieval theme to the game mixed with a little victorian but they ruined it.theres to much going on.I checked on the game about 2 or 3 years ago to see if if it was still active.last time it didn't have as many players when I first played it.I wanted to see if it got any better.But I can see they ruined it.

Ah I loveeeed Fashionogi! I was super rich and did nothing but collect the best outfits. I had to quit cold turkey because I was addicted and it was interfering with real life. Got way too attached to my pixels 😅

i stopped playing years ago got sick of the bots most people were AFK all the time and just sit around a sell junk. really hard to find gear just to repair it and fail is durability lost for good and that was it for me lol

I do not think Mabinogi is dead per say. I just feel like things are a lot more difficult for new players. I also think since people who are already high-level stick to high level players leaving upcoming players in the dark or they try to take money from new players in order for them to help us in hard quests. That was the only reason I stopped playing and I have been playing since the 00's. I just recently started playing again with a new character.

@@Paxseko a lot of people were unfortunately. It was like you had to pay a certain amount in order for them to help with you with missions and certain high level places that one person cannot do. Like it was not how it was before where you make friends and you go on quests together. It’s kind of sad but I’m trying to be optimistic about it since I started back playing recently

The only game I know of that can hold a candle to just how truly brilliant Mabinogi is, is FFXIV. However, what 'kills' Mabinogi in that comparison are the 'life' skills. in FFXIV these are your standard crafting/gathering skillls. In FFXIV, these skills are fairly easy to get into and fun to level. However in Mabinogi, these skills are very tedious to even start out in, let alone to level up. However, in Mabi, these skills also go a long ways in buffing your character, while in FFXIV they are really only if you want to get into the economic side o things, outside of cooking skills, which allow you to make buffs. This structuring, I believe, is deliberate. Life skills in Mabi directly give you power. But to get that power takes time and dedication. In FFXIV, they are fast and fluid, if you have the necessary materials. They do this so the player can work on things outside of the story, while also getting coin for selling their crafts.

I remember when I was 10, one of my friends had a wedding (dunno what his name was but he was a boy), he was getting married AT LITERAL MIDNIGHT. and since I was 10, there is no way I can stay up that long. I felt bad so I wrote a formal letter, it was too formal. Said something like “dear (insert guy) I am sorry that I cannot attend you wedding, insert formal apology sentence, also I bought fireworks for your wedding” then to top it all off, I ended with “yours truly, skydaw” it wouldn’t let me use my name when I tried to use it when I first downloaded it, so I randomized and it became “skydaw” I thought it was cool, so I went with it 💀 and my friend saw the message and he was like “wait wait hol up😂” he was probably thinking “why is this kid apologizing to me?” And he said “that’s ok sky 😂” I don’t remember what I said after that lol

It's not "dead" per say, but I don't think a lot of people play it anymore, including me. I used to play daily, having started back in August 2013, but after a while, it started getting boring: not a lot of players were around (aside from AFK players and moneygold bots in Dunbarton or Belvast), events were almost always an AFK event, the generation stories are more focused on the Alban Knights instead of the ACTUAL STORY OF THE GAME, I got what I wanted in the game (titles, grandmaster classes, weapons, etc.), and literally none of my friends play it anymore. I stopped playing earlier this year (2021) and moved on to Final Fantasy XIV. The game will be dead if Nexon doesn't clean up their act and stop pushing Gachapons, AFK events, Alban generations and reforges onto people.

For my thoughts. As of now the MMORPG of Mabinogi is sort of dead. There are the majority of idle faking players than those active and on the go for Nao server. I don't see high amount of opportunities to create party for Girgashiy, Thetha, or advanced dungeons. Sad. #Mabinogi #Activity #Events

the problem with mabinogi is the watering down that devcat/nexon has done to the game. to fix this game heres what needs to be done so this is my message to devcat: -delete blaanid, brave boost and brave boost quests. you shouldnt be raining 6 million exp to anyone for tutorial quests. when you do that, you cheapen the game's experience as a whole. it makes it like some shittily made DnD game with a DM that doesnt care. as if a DM just said "fuck it i dont even want to play this game.. 6 million EXP all around! fuck it you're pro's now after 3 sessions." it should take at least 5 hours instead of 5 minutes to get even half as close to that much experience -Deletes dungeon guide and adventurers guide! if they want to know how to play the game, tir chonaill already had a line of quests and there also was a spirit weapon called eiry that helps you learn the game. you dont need guides. you have the tutorial. -Delete mabinogi NEXT update/rollback your game. r1 for any skills should take forever to fully complete your CP on. its on purpose, it makes the master title have its own value, as the player will get a sense of accomplishment if they spend weeks just to get that far. it really should apply across all skills, and waay before r1. rA is where things should start getting difficult because thats when your skills start getting high enough to take on big league challenges like the Old rooms in the back of dungeons. the point of this is to give the players a reason to return back to the game over the course of long periods of time. -Delete the skill seals. they are cancer. They made them for lazy gamers, who should stick to sims 4 and raid: shadow legends if they cant be arsed to play a game and want a game to play itself. -Delete Fynni pets: pets to help you level up your pets? really? just play as the pet then and upgrade the pet by playing as the pets, thats how this works. you play the game to upgrade the pets, not put them with other pets to water down that experience -Better events with better rewards: fishing event that gives out gems and junk for fynni pets and homesteads? if i wanted to play a sim builder, i'd plays sims. -lock up the moon gates and sun gates: moon gates are called moon gates becaue they originally activated at 6pm-6am. the sun gates activate from 6AM-6PM on purpose. people can still get almost everywhere without these except Ceo Island. -bring back the old rebirth system. people SHOULD have to wait till they're 20 to free rebirth at least. this generates demand for character cards, which puts money in Nexon's pocket, while simultaneously leaving the door open for non-paying players to enjoy the experience of a free rebirth at age 20. -Delete this time shift crap. if a meteor crash requires 5 minutes to cool down, you shouldnt be able to trump that by resetting the cooldown with a cheap trick. cooldowns are important so it forces the players to strategize their attacks, and motivate players to level up their characters to face challenges. ruin that and you've watered down the game. but for who? obviously for people who dont want to play the game in the first place, and those people shouldnt matter. -chain whip skills, dual gunner skills need rebalancing. chain whip is overpowered for no reason. everything chain whip related is overpowered. you can attack from halfway across a room in a dungeon. thats broken! do something about it! Dual Gunner is overpowered! I can also attack from halfway across a map with no success/failure rate like with archery, and that should exist since they are ranged weapons and should have a hit/miss mechanic. dual guns need a rebalance, and their skills need tweaking. These are also overpowered. -Raids need better rewards. for example: Nobody fights black dragon raids anymore! the rewards arent worth it! do something about it, devcat. as a returning player these are some of the most critical complaints i have about this game. it would do Devcat well to listen and honor these complaints. PS: Bring back dropping unblessed equipment when you die. why did they take it away, I will never understand. that added difficulty is intentional in design. bring it back. remove perfect repair too. perfect repair ruins the point of blessing your equipment: to insure your equipment from repair fails. risk is important in an online game. it sweetens the rewards, it enhances the value of equipment. stop removing it! people should fear consequences for failing a dungeon. people should want to use the in game insurance for equipment to enhance its chances against risk of failing to repair or risk of dropping equipment and having to buy it back from the lost and found. these are intentional game designs. bring them back!
