Mad Max somehow has only had 2 licensed games ever made in its history, and plenty of failed attempts. Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios took their open world chops to the Angry Australian's road raging apocalyptic nightmare with...middling reception. But as we'll hear from me as well as guest stars @Gggmanlives @HeyBlondieGamer @Deadforge (thanks so much, guys!) was the game actually underrated and just swept away in the incredible open world frenzy of games like Batman: Arkham Knight, Witcher 3, and Metal Gear Solid V especially, which released on the same day? Or is it truly just a game that fans will mostly appreciate for its heartfelt attempt to adapt the material but which wears out its welcome through tedious busywork and an underwhelming story?

In my opinion, it's one of the most fun games I played in the last 10 years. It's one of the first games I got when I got my PS4. There's just a lot of personality to the game. A lot of things to do. A lot of things to see. A lot of things to kill. And some people may not realize but when you have headphones on, and the Sun is starting to set out in the wasteland. The music and the sound effects are downright terrifying. Much like when you go into a buzzard's nest with limited visibility. The tension is very real. Seriously. If you've never played it with headphones on. It's much like the original Bioshock whenever you get to the medical district. The subtle and not so subtle audio cues will definitely make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. My opinion on the game... Solid 8.5 with high replay value.

I recall this game surprising the heck out of me by how good it was. I played it back a bit before they announced they were shutting down its weird server connection in 2020 that was needed for the auto scrap collecting. Big achievement fan, and them shutting that down made an achievement unobtainable, so I wanted to complete it before then. Found a really fun open world car combat, brawler game I would probably give around a 8 or 8.5 out of 10 to. Think when I bought it I paid less than 15 bucks(I've not paid more than 15-20 bucks or 50-60+ percent off price for a game in years. Well The Outer Wilds only got to 40% off, but that game is fucking worth full price)for it, and got great game for that price.

For me it's still one of the best open world games out there. I loved the game when it first come out. Unfortunately I had some bugs and couldn't do the 100%. So I dropped it later, after completing the story. Then I've got it years later again and had another really good time. But yes, the huge, beautiful landscape with nothing (at least it fitted to the setting more than in other games) to do, frustrated after a while, so I finished the main story again and let it again. I don't play a lot of open world games anymore (except of survival games), but overall, most of the triple A worlds bored me to their waste of time actions. I think as a real survival experience it would work better. Nevertheless Mad Max was a great game and should be definitely played by fans. Except of a few flaws, it was a real Mad Max game and how it should work and feel. The combat was good and the punches felt heavy. Driving was interesting and the battles great. Visually the game is still fantastic. But I think Mad Max would be much better, if someone would create a hardcore survival game. The last game was def to easy and I hadn't fear of dying there. In this case it was pretty mainstream. Outlander was also very cool. Played 2 versions. The Mega Drive/Genesis was first person driving and the Snes was 3rd person. Awesome artstyle. Great video and I really enjoyed the background informations you offenerd. 🤗👍

Thanks! It was hard to track down good info because it was only on wikis mostly outside of one interview and was sometimes conflicting. Yeah, I hold this as one of my "I like this more than most people do" open world list of Watch Dogs, Saints Row the Third, and Sleeping Dogs. They have more style than GTA or whatever and are more interested in me having fun rather than just simulating realism. I do think its surprising that they make refueling a part of the tutorial and outside of one wasteland mission that makes you gas up a vehicle before taking it out, it never comes up again. I think it wouldve benefited to make this game a little more entrenched in the worlds concerns of gas scarcity and such, as its really the lifeblood of this world
@Predator1981Gaming
@Predator1981Gaming 15 күн бұрын
@@HighFunctioningMedium True. My prob with open worlds is that a lot of them just send you around... do this do that. Exploring is to strictly and not conicidental. That's what I personally don't like. A good survival writes the plot with your actions and depends the way. I loved the immersive world of Red Dead Redemption 2. The world there really felt organic. But it's a game I never completed, cause I got bored after a while. I would say it's almost a perfect open world game, but now game for me. And yes, also thought there would be more with gasoline problems, but I guess they would be aftaid if the players let the game go, after running out of gas, walking for miles and finally die in the desert 😁 what I always liked in Mad Max, they are all running for the rare resource, gasoline, but everyone drives beautiful and awesome muscle cars 😅 so, no, that franchise shouldn't be to realistic at all, but a bit more strugglig to survive would be great. 😊

@@HighFunctioningMedium scrotus and chum bucket cameos, Glory, and Hope specially Glory is the girl in Max's hallucinations which did not make any sense when unless you played the game. I haven't finished the game yet but now that I have seen both Furiosa and Fury Road, the Mad Max video game gives an added value and much needed lore to the events in between both movies. I am theorizing that Furiosa takes place before the Mad Max video game and the game happens before Fury Road. So basically: OG trilogy timeline, furiosa, video game, fury road.

I mean the game released in 2015, what I consider a year of great games. GTA 5 for the Xbox One and Ps4 in November 2014, The Witcher 3, Arkham Knight, Black Ops 3, Metal Gear Solid 5 and Fallout 4. Despite it being am amazing game, Mad Max had to contend with them. We were spoiled back then as gamers, and the amount of inundated games that seek to suck the consumer dry makes Mad Max seem like a jewel. You can't go wrong playing it
@HighFunctioningMedium
@HighFunctioningMedium 4 күн бұрын
Oh shoot, I totally forgot Fallout 4 came out that year too. Good grief, that was really one of the best years the Xbox One/PS4 ever had, huh? Brutal year for a middle of the pack kind of game. Yeah thats honestly what got me into KZbin - seeing how many new games did nothing for me and being crippled by choice as to which of the old classics I wanted to play. Happened to find reviews of retro games that I thought would be refreshing and got totally hooked on them and have been playing many for the first time and rebuilding my Xbox 360/Xbox game collection to play/review. Oldies but goodies!

You've matched a lot of thoughts I had. Unmatched wasteland vibes, still unmatched fire effects, lovely car handling/car combat system. Progression was miffed (esp first half) and combat (despite excellent grimy feel to it) didn't felt reliable. Ending was rushed as do many systems. This is a good foundation for a better sequel, but that is never happening. On another note, PC port is one of the best. I can change the window size with no issues, so I set it vertical right side, while youtube video ran on left side on my browser. So ubisoft busywork chore felt less boring.

This game and Days Gone. Similar in how you are building a vehicle as a play incentive as well as both being underrated gems (atleast as far as critics and their publishers go). You know back in the 90's I used to spend countless hours playing a game franchise where all you did was car combat (that used to be enough) but I always wished I could exit my car a run around looking for upgrades, those games where called Twisted Metal. If I could play a game like this back then I probably would have never left my house.

The same way a game can be 10/10 and still have a bunch of flaws, mostly because it does so much right, I totally agree with Mad Max's 7/10 meta score yet I still really love it. There's something about the "game feel" of this game that makes it greater than the sum of it's parts. Now it's not one of those masterpieces I try to replay once every other year like Red Dead 2, The Last Of Us or Hyper Light Drifter but I definitely feel the two 100% playthroughs I've done over the years was time well spent. And to answer your question: definitely underrated! I mean, the $5 price tag says it all. Obviously nobody's buying the thing.

A potential classic, that fell into "huge open world grindathon" that pretty much all AAA games fall into. They could've kept the map, as it fits the Mad Max aesthetic, but literally halved the amount content. Burnt out on the scrapping for scrap before reaching the northern regions. Shadow of the Collosus showed how to do a large map without all the pointless content.

It's not awful, it just can't hold my attention like I wanted it to. It feels like a smashed together product of several other games that both work together and serves to bog down the experience. As far as I as can tell this is meant to be a loose prequel to Fury Road. It even follows the same general plot outline of the prequel comic for that movie, just... different details. In both Glory and her mother get kidnapped and later freed by Max, but ultimately get killed anyway. And it makes sense, by the end of the game Max has lost utterly everything except his original car. He's mentally broken, haunted by guilt, and presumably on the run from vengeful War Boys. Maybe he was being chased at the start of Fury Road because of bad luck... OR maybe those War Boys were pissed he killed Scabrous Scrotus? Also all that loss would make him mentally unstable enough to start hallucinating Glory blaming him for her death like what happens in the movie. Like a lot of things Mad Max, it's up for interpretation.

Thanks, bud! Yknow, people were balking at Furiosas weird look but ive seen rave reviews this past week. I actually had a line in the original script about how it reminded me of I Am Alive, a really cool type of game thats horribly frustrating XD

Its super arbitrary and frustrating because of it but impeccable atmosphere and tension. One of the great examples that games can be unique, interesting, and not cost a ton to make, which we could learn a lot from these days

@ACougarSwagnum thanks, boss. Dont worry, Ive mentioned I Am Alive in passing before and I think about it from time to time so Ill def review it someday. Ive been meaning to do a lot of the old XBLA games honestly. $15 classics all over the place like Call of Juarez: Gunslinger and State of Decay, etc

I got two-thirds of the way through. There was definitely a very fun game for 10-15 hours there. But it's too repetitive.

Def repetitive. I couldnt believe how long i played on my first go past when i was really getting a whole lot out of it, was just kinda trying to get as far as i could. At times its nice and zen to do something repetitive and other times i wished for a little more spark in these long strings of tasks

Yeah it looks bad as a score but it's really just 7 out of 10. Perhaps 7.5 is really where I'd put it cuz its got some pretty cool stuff but a lot of fluff and it could stand to have more setpieces

The game simply was another empty, open-world slog where exploration outside of markers was unrewarding, like all of this studio's games. Same with Rage 2; It's a good game as long as you simply follow the markers and only drive to the Arches. Empty worlds make more sense in MM, especially with the car aspect, but it was still dragging on. Basically just another Ubisoft game but Mad Max. Still looks good though. Would have preferred a Punisher/Max Payne style gameplay with linear levels or small, Deus Ex like hubs at best
@HighFunctioningMedium
@HighFunctioningMedium 15 күн бұрын
Yeah, it's about as Punisher as it gets (a reference I make twice actually) without becoming a shooter, which Max has never been. Mostly it felt like the world was just split up into too many disparate parts so that instead of 20 of something you had 40 or 50, let's say. Just too much busywork to get started. I do like this a lot better than the average Just Cause game because Chumbucket's a fun guy to ride with and the story's a lot better and has a history with me vs the dull guy from Just Cause and his endless radio chatter convos or generic cutscenes, though. I'll give them that for sure. Not a bad game here, but I do wish they'd clipped out a fair bit of the fluff or gone a little harder into what was working like the scripted sequences.

The game is simply way too easy, repetitive and formulaic. It's a 20 min loop that goes for 60 hours. Nothing ever changes. Once you've had one fight, that's it, you've had them all. And it is so unchallenging, it almost makes you doze off. Graphics and overall atmosphere are good enough, but everything else seems like it was made for the lowest common denominator.

Nope, asked him to contribute as an Australian who might have unique insight, gave him free reign to talk about whatever he wanted, he did, and i just split it up in the video by relevance to what i was talking about. If you'll notice too, his old Mad Max video isn't even available anymore so I had even more incentive to get his thoughts out there on the game
