You guys are getting on topics that make me have pull the old man card.... Back in my day I had to walk in snow a hundred feet deep to get to the liquor store. So I got my first job in a recording studio back in the 1970's, then around 2006 I got into the DAW world, just doing audio editing. Now in 2024 an old retired guy decide to get back into recording for fun and my head is spinning on how different the roles are today. Back in the 70's everything analog and computers were something huge corporations had. I was basically "the guy" at the studio breaking down sessions, cleaning control room (and cleaning everything else too), make coffee and run errands. Today I get that is the runner. The goal was to work up to being a 2nd Engineer, today that would be a Assistant Engineer. A Engineer did the tracking and the mixing and would go to the vinyl Master session to approve everything. Producers most could engineer and some did both jobs, but producer worked with artist on song selection, basic arrangement, hiring musicians, overdubs, editing, mixing, translator between artist/musicians and the engineer, and producers most had great ears so they were the autotune of the day telling singer your off. Good producers worked a lot with the artist/group before ever stepping foot in the studio getting the arrangements down, getting the song down to target time, solos, vocals and etc. Because studio time was expensive and the better prepared the artist was the less time in the studio was needed. Also editing tape was very different so if a artist/group could play the song front to back in a take it had a better feel and flow, than today cut and paste assembling a song. So for me it really interesting listening to you all and other KZbinrs on recording today and thinking back how different it was.

They are on decent topics but their takes are horrible ! To say that today's system is working is a volunteered lie from the pits of hell lol ! We can't even remember half the shit that these artist are putting out ! They're so focused on quantity till they have no clue what quality is ! Mannie on the other hand doesn't have to work another day in his life and the same system he put in place is still working ! Even the Bible say's the student will never be as high as the teacher People really need to learn respect and how to listen to people who influenced a entire generation

what Manny is really saying is... having an ear for hits isn't a solo thing. to create magic your ego has to leave the room. Dr. Dre's worked with everyone who says the same thing. If you hire an a-list producer to produce the record (not just make the beat), then you make sure your writing is right and let him produce the record fully.

Mannie Fresh needs to get back with Barewolf- his keyboard player, and Corey Stoot aka Funky Fingers - his guitar and bass player. Barewolf said he was the one coming up with those keyboard melodies and layers you heard on the Big Tymers' albums "How Do U Luv That", Juvenile albums- 400 Degreez, The G-Code, BG albums, etc. I'm sure yall noticed after 2001-2002, the Cash Money sound had changed up. That's because Barewolf and Corey Stoot had left. You didn't hear that funk sound from 1997-2001 when Mannie Fresh was dropping classic albums. Listen to Mannie Fresh's album "The Mind of Mannie Fresh. It doesn't sound like those 1998-2000 albums. It was an ok album👎🏽😢. That's because his 2 main musicians were gone. People say Mannie Fresh fell off or he's washed up. It's not that, it's because his main players are gone

Yall missing the point. The point is that there is a disconnect. Mannie is absolutely right. There are no great albums that are made without the producers and artists being in the same room. Beat makers send beats and producers sees the project through to the finish.

The perfect example of this is shown all over RHYTHM & FLOW S2. None of those artists (including the person who won) could take direction in or outside of the studio. There is no wrong or right way to do it……if the songs come out fire that’s all that matters. Especially if you’re locking in with one artist, because u know each other. U don’t always have to be in the room together for the chemistry and magic to happen.

I totally agree with Mannie ! Hence the reason the music out today is trash !! Just because someone likes it doesn't make it good! Just look at the sales ! Yes you have small niches of music that make noise but when it's time to look at the numbers , they are trash and none of the music has staying power hence the reason in one year we don't remember none of the songs that were put out from the previous year ! The mentality is the issue ! To even try to refute anything Mannie just said is ridiculous ! Here you have a legend that still making money and currently on stage at sold out shows off music he created over 20 years ago versus people who are saying the system now is working ! Denial is a hell of a drug !

There is no singular way to create or to extract the most from any particular artist/producer. Although I choose to create in the way the Mannie creates I do not feel that this is the best/worst way to create. It just suits me and my workflow. Jake One makes great music with Rick Ross but never works in the studio with him.

Email was around with us “old heads “ that is our generation’s technology but as he said it wasn’t always feasible do to bandwidth file size limitations . And You still gonna have to be in some kind of studio to record your vocals and have input on how your Music is mixed if you want quality and cohesive professional sounding music..even if its just your buddies home studio. Whether that producer can also wear a recording engineer hat or if it’s a guy who is a recording engineer

@apexone55024 күн бұрын
It's not an "old head hate technology" thing. The Foreign Exchange (Phonte and Nicolay) literally created their first album by sending stuff via emails and such since Nicolay was still in The Netherlands at the time while Phonte was in North Carolina. That album dropped in 2004. Mannie has a preference for working with the artist in person. That's all it is. That has nothing to do with being a luddite.
@creativeclectic3 күн бұрын
you said hot songs... Say hot albums... There's only a handful of albums made in the "Email me the beat/verse" era that you can make it through without skipping. biggie Ready to Die, is an album with 0 skips. It's also a generational difference of how we intake music/content/anything. Younger kids just want a song and move to another song. Older people grew up listening to entire albums and grew up having listening sessions.
