Just to correct what you said, Ali said fighting Joe in the 3rd fight was the "closest" he has ever come to death - meaning they had put so much work into that fight, outside and in the ring that he had no energy left, nothing left in the tank - both fighters were done, stubborn, unwilling to give up, and would have both carried on UNTIL one, if not both of them dropped. That is why it was stopped by Joe's trainer, who was probably losing on points anyway, he wasn't going to knock Ali out.

My take is that both are Phenomenal fighters, however at the end of the day if you have the right to claim to be the best there is Pound for Pound you must fight every fighter that comes to the ring that is anywhere close to your rank. That's what they fight for is the chance to fight the best to be the best. Floyd came to the ring to face the best at the time and won, so he had his chance and Floyd proved to be the better man. So IMO if Floyd feels that he can beat him a winner take all fight is not that far out of the question. When I line up next to a guy and we race, in my mind I have no question that I will win. Therefore it's up to the guy I'm racing if it's for fun or for slips, not me. If I lose I will hand it over, there is no "Oh man I'm the bigger draw for this race I need half the money and my bike back!" Is Floyd the draw? No question he is 43-0 however it would be the ultimate statement if he did it.
