Through this video I wish to address some fundamental questions that students have regarding career within Mechanical Engineering. Many a time, students have some wrong notions regarding the prospects in this field. I hope to dispel some of these wrong notions.
Students also have some questions:
Whether a career in Mechanical Engineering can lead to high paying jobs?
Whether a career in Mechanical Engineering can allow for the creative application of their knowledge and talents?
What kind of career growth can they expect?
I try to answer these questions in a broad way.
Fill this form if you wish to post a question to me for a deeper discussion: forms.gle/M3ksxwjJHSB9zB4D7
Interesting questions, comments from the above form may be featured in future KZbin videos.

In short, if you love and are passionate about the subject you go and grab. But if your aim is money and other worldly things and if you can be influenced by social media , then do what is really required for that. Great respect for you professor you told it in a very sensitive and mature way. I hope the majority of teachers and professors were like you.

@Prof_JC How to learn to become a true engineer ? I am an engineering student currently studying at a government university in srilanka. Now I am feeling like I can't become a true engineer. Because I am not a top level student with high iq. I am an average or slightly above average student. The reason why I am feeling like this is because I have to put a lot of work to understand and learn mathematics and physics. If I can't learn those subject deeply , and fast how can I apply them fluently in real life. Even though I don't have any other choices to take. I have to study it. Is there any way to learn to think like an engineer , I want to learn and understand engineering subjects so deeply and I should be able to use it fluently. Can you guide me

@@jayantsingh3078 it's not over and you know what most people are just ignorant about it. There are areas like turbo machinary, combustion, turbulence etc. That seems to be well established, but they have not even been skimmed from the surface. There are fracture mechanics, continuum mechanics etc. which are very very difficult to understand. If you master some of these areas, you'll be an engineer in demand. But again the path to this is tough. You'll start your true career when computer science guys will be planning for retirement. But that's how mechanical is, you have to work very hard for little return. Probably in future mechanical engineers will be paid well for their work, but that is possible only when some us mechanical engineers change the system.

Thank you for making this video JC Sir. I would be very thankful if you would read and reply to my question. I myself am a mechanical graduate from a Tier 3 college (2022 batch). Right now I am 0 gate preparation level. I wish to pursue a masters degree from IIT Bombay (30 min away from my home and frequently ill parents). I have a practical responsibility of supporting my parents as soon as possible (probably within 3-4 years). I consider myself patient with studies and research but have lacked in discipline as well as practical resource like career guidance and money). I chose mechanical engineering because I was good at physics and maths, and no doubt I have enjoyed the core Mech subjects. But gradually I became fascinated with computer science as well, not only its career prospects but also technicalies. So right now I feel like I am equally interested in both. Although keeping in mind the current job scenario and my responsibility to support my parents fully in 3-4 years, I am confused which should prepare for, Gate ME or Gate CSE? I would be really thankful if you could provide some direction and pointers to me to decide. I am stuck in overthinking.

I understand and appreciate the real picture you have put up here. And, it is correct. As far as I understand, many companies implement things which are passed on to them from R&D divisions elsewhere. There are maybe only a handful of very big companies which have proper R&D divisions in India with proper Mechanical Engineering graduates (Masters and PhDs) working there. And, a lot of it is indeed simulation work. Materials Science is an immensely active field and certainly there is immense potential for innovation there too.

If you are not interested in PhD, then surely you are looking to get a job as soon as you complete your Masters. Doing your Masters in an Interdisciplinary program can certainly give you an edge. But at the same time, before joining, you should try to find out the placement statistics of the Department/Institute that you would be joining for such a program. Interest is not a substitute of reality. Take it only if you are comfortable with being unemployed for some or long time. Other than IITs or NITs, average college won't get you placed. Companies hi nhi aayengi to kya karoge ? Also, vacancies in PSUs are in single digit or double digit less than 40 (being too generous, usually 13, 15 like that). And you will be facing students from IITs.

Hello Professor ! I obtained deep insights from this video, beautiful crafted to address this tough question. I want to work with machines and build robots/automobiles or perhaps do innovations. As of now , I am a first year student of MechE in NIT Durgapur. How should I proceed to pursue a MS in mechanical Engineering from Germany? Have no idea how to prepare. Would be obliged if I could get your valuable insights on this.

I find it very cute how this dude rationalizes the fact that he's in a field that's almost 100% subsidized by the government, almost all its research is people putting stuff in a code and getting it out, even though he tries really hard to pretend it's not, forces students to do menial work in long MSc and PhD programs because it's intellectually satisfying, and when data from the real world comes in proving no one cares about this it's because the OTHERS are self centered. It's way past time that the government defunds this garbage so that we don't waste more creative potential than what we have already.

So, I was thinking of taking DTU Mechanical and then explore the field. Will it be a tough course? PS: sorry for asking this layman questions but I am really confused.

with all due respect sir , Mechanical engineering is not a worth of option in India . The work phenomenon ,the culture , and the prospect are diminishing here . if you want to pursue the academics then it is good . All the talk of interest and passion wane up .Practically , there is no scope in job , marriage or dating zone back here . We cant just live off the interest . When you see the people of IT and computer earning leaps and bounds adn visiting the foreign more often then you would question was it worth ? . you will earn money out of experience but what if i give money to a 99 year old person who was all beggar throughout his prime . Many of the people move towards IT where they earn easy money and enjoy all the perks of the european standards .
@MrSuperpdr

I have not seen the US europe standards of mechanical engg so cant comment but through my friends i hear that atleast they enjoy the work that is demanding and innovative rather than back in india where they were just punching two times and eating luch one time .
