Sure. For this photos, if exported for the web, you don't need medium format. And - also don't need full format. Also don't need APS-C. Also don't need MFT. You even don't need 1". All you need for this shots and this purpose is a good smartphone. So - are 1" sensors worth it? No, definitely not. A smartphone is all you need. So let's find another situation where you only need a smartphone and make a video about that situation.

Completely agree with you here. The difference in quality screams and jumps to (my) eyes! Even through YT! If then this guy claims that MF or the best FF is not worth it, well, keep smiling stupidly. You know exactly that your video is nothing else but clickbait or you’re completely off tracks and should change activity. Never ever a pro would make such stupid affirmations! So no, I’m not feeding you positive comments or congratulate for the choice of subject you made. You chose to say something senseless, now get the critic.

You don't even need full-frame camera for that. In fact you can just shoot with portrait mode with your phone and will achieve 95% the same results. Medium format cameras are targeting specific usecases like extra large prints of very detailed landscapes, architecture shots, etc., not for posting on instagram.

I understand what you say. It is difficult to tell in this format and in other such formats. I have seen RAW files from the FUJI 100 and the R5 (I own the latter) and in the raw files one can see the difference as you also say. For social media, and small size print output it is hard to tell. The key GFX advantage (besides the obvious resolution) is in the dynamic range and variation in tonality the superior sensor is able to capture. However, it comes at a very high cost not just for the body and the lenses but also weight, and AF speed, storage, having to shoot at higher f/ for the same DOF.... The issue is if you value these, the trade off, etc. This is something one has to decide given their circumstances. I decided to go the R5 route, maybe in the future I will revisit or even buy a GFX but at present and the foreseeable future for me the scale doesn't tip that way.

For me, Medium format is for commercial purposes (eg architectural/print/catalog/scientific), where technical performance and raw resolution are hard requirements. Back in the day when I was shooting weddings and portraits on film, it was easy to justify and distinguish shooting medium formats above 35mm since I could show clients on an 8x10 and 24x36 prints the quality and resolution differences between shooting Canon or Nikon 35mm negative (like most of my competitors) versus my Mamiya and Bronica 6x7 120 slide film. Nowadays with digital and social being the primary delivery and viewing platforms, the advantages between digital full frame and digital medium formats are lost on most people. The platforms and bandwidth limitations simply crush and negate the color depth and resolution advantages. I haven’t had a single customer in the past 15 years even question the camera system, resolution or sensor size/format. Modern software makes image upscaling and editing for full frame sensors a non-factor for large format printing versus larger sensor formats for most use cases. So unless your line of work (or hobby!). specifically calls for delivery of images to a certain resolution and color depth, I don’t find medium format digital worth the expense or hassle for paid work. All that said, you will have to pry my cold dead fingers from my freezer stash of Velvia rolls and medium format cameras and lenses!

I recently (December 2021) bought a Hasselblad camera. You're absolutely right, the moment they hit the internet, it's sad. I guess the aesthetic that the optics bring makes it worth it. The fall-off depth and Compression to Field of View ratio is a big give-away. I guessed "A" right off the bat. You are correct, MF is mute if you're only posting online. However if you are printing [mostly large] you will then see the difference. A lot has to do with lenses as well. However, in print or online, that extra sensor size with the right lens is something magical. I shoot Hasselblad 6x6 which is a MUCH bigger image area, but have yet to dive into DMF [crop or full] and looking at images from that camera with native Carl Zeiss lenses is something that you can not get with anything smaller. Right now on special photoshoots I use my 503cx and scan the negatives with stunning and unique results until I can afford to jump into DMF.
@ajcr5880

The field curvature made it very obvious as well as the subject compression. If those artifacts are *also* OK for soc med then WTH anything goes. As for IQ, for the same FOV a 44x33 100MP sensor spreads the same image out over 40% more pixels & 70% more area, vs. a 61MP , 35.8x23.5 , sensor. Plus the Sony doesn't have automatic focus-bracketing (stacking), Play-memories is abandonware, their menu-to-feature schema is a renown wreck & so on .. Heck even Tony Northrop posted a rant about the A7r4's deficits. Meanwhile a Mamiya 7 goes for $4k with a 55mm lens... :).

Agree in some point, but think Medium format is not just about the resolution. I bought GFX100s recently as well in addition to my Sony A1 and A9, but main reason for Fuji was the color science. Because doing more of the commercial work using GFX blew my mind in more ways - yes, resolution and detail is amazing and it's crazy to zoom in your Lightroom or Capture, but the most I love the colors. There is no much need to adjust the files at all, because they look amazing as they are and since GFX, don't need to do anything to the colors anymore. And ofcourse, pictures look different, there is something nieche that is different and is hard to describe, but is definitely more than just the resolution. But agree in general, it's definitely for everybody

From a practical standpoint, I know I have all I need. But, there is an itch I need to scratch. This video reminds me that it is just an itch. Doesn’t mean I won’t buy a Canon R5, Fuji GFX 50s II or Sony A7IV. It just means that I realize that the purchase has little to do with growth.

This video is so timely for me- I’ve been shooting hair portraits with an R6 and some of the pricier RF lenses, but I recently started using an M50 and an RP with a nifty fifty for sort of research to guide other barbers and stylists into a cheap easy camera for their portfolios and not a soul on Instagram noticed when I’d post the much cheaper images. So I destroyed my own worldview and realized that for what I do I can use pretty much any camera, but at the same time it made me think that maybe medium format would offer a noticeable advantage that apparently didn’t exist between my cheaper test cameras and my work horse. I’m thinking now that it won’t.

GFX with 100mpix can be something that puts you in front from other photographers. Often clients (non-wedding) are looking for best quality they can get and if you can offer for them something that other photographers can't then it is worth to own GFX just to get more jobs. Sure, in perfect world your talent should sell your job not the gear but we all know it doesn't work that way very often. On the other hand sometimes getting RF50L or 85L can give you that leap ahead of other photographers in terms of visual quality. Crisp and sharp images is mostly what clients want not the ones with perfect color tones. It would be so nice to own R6, R5 and GFX 100s with all best lenses and just to choose from them sitting there in your camera bag to do the job you are doing at the moment ;)

What's the point comparing pictures into small YT video size or unsocial networks? Literally, you can also use a cheapskate 3 or 5 MP Camera from back of the heyday, or any current smartphone Sensor nowadays is good enough for this task. ;) Each Sensor size and therefore system does serve a purpose. Keep that in mind. Of course, you don't need a digital Medium Format System for unsocial networks - totally overkill, joke aside, for archival imaging, haute couture, landscape photography, and huge print sizes - it does make sense.

If you’re just putting it on the web, you don’t even need a FF camera. If you’re looking to print them for an art gallery, then it makes a difference. The one difference you will notice in your images is the depth of field not matter what platform you end up displaying the images. That was a dead give away in your images. The Fuji images had more of a 3d aspect to them because of the depth of field. The issue you bring up was the same issue back when film cameras were the only still image medium. Do I shoot 35mm or medium format? Back then you either shot for photo albums, for printed advertisement, or for gallery work. Now a days we have the internet, which essentially replaced most printed magazines. Frankly, nothing has really changed except for the fact that digital has caught up with film image resolution over the past five to ten years, and today’s cameras have much better autofocus capabilities. The gear wars were the same, only now we have the internet to amplify the noise.

If images are going to be viewed on the web or in magazines and newsprint the test is valid as long as there is no need to crop heavily. And in that lies the problem. If one needs to crop heavily particularly in order to print e.g. for sale like fine art or landscapes then MP matter. I'd say 45 or thereabouts and above is right. The format of choice will depend on a variety of factors, not least the depth of one's pocket. For my own photography the R6 doesn't have enough MP. Lovely camera. I'd say for 80% to 85% a z6 II or X-T4 is great. Trouble comes when I want to print say 30% of an image up at A3+ or beyond.

Thanks for doing this! Serious question though: you might not be able to see the difference in the output file, but what about the editing process and getting the subtle nuances of color/tone gradation that you can bring out in your images? Or what about the edge sharpening? (I have no pre-conceived notions about this...I'm genuinely curious!) I'm a Canon shooter and am seriously looking at maybe jumping to the GFX 100s. Honestly, I know that I don't need 100 MPs for each shot--it's WAY overkill for the images I do...but I do want more than the meager 20-30 MPs that Canon seems to think we should be happy with and I'm frustrated that they don't have an option for those of us who simply want more. One thing about Canon files is that they tend to over-compensate for the smaller pixel dimensions by over-sharpening edges to make everything seem sharper and crisper than it really is. From what I've seen, this edge contrast is baked into the RAW file and I'm constantly struggling to try and undo it...and it's super frustrating. My hope was that the huge dimensions of the GFX 100s wouldn't need to resort to that and edges would be appear more natural out of the camera. As far as the subtle nuances of tone/color, I notice that a lot of the fine detail or texture in areas that are the same luminosity or color is lost unless it stands out a lot. I know the argument is that once you export the image, no one would ever see that anyway...but it frustrates me while I'm editing (because I think I'm too much of a perfectionist.) Plus I can't help but wonder if I could be getting better results if I can get those subtle details when I'm doing my overall grading. Have you noticed either of the above problems in your Canon files? If so, do they exist in the Fuji RAWs? Many thanks!

I completely agree. I’ve always thought that the Fujifilm Medium format attracted a niche group. Mainly Fuji users that wanted bigger than crop sensor and since Fuji doesn’t have Full frame a lot of Fuji users went straight up to the GFX line to increase their sensor size capabilities. The rest who this camera attracted are folks with high resolution print and commercial needs. Otherwise most folks will get what they need from APS-C or Full frame cameras. Even my 12mp Sony A7sIII produces gorgeous images and even prints decent medium size prints.

Dear Alex, thanks for the interesting video. I actually own a GFX 50R and love it, but indeed I don’t have for the image quality when I post stuff on Instagram. Frankly nowadays an iPhone 13 gives you perfectly looking images and you don’t need a canon r6. However I don’t use an iPhone for photography since I don’t like user experience. I love to shoot my Fuji cameras hence I shoot more. But I don’t need to make money with photography I don’t need the most efficient work flow. What I am really interested in the GFX line is the sensor size, since in theory it allows for more depth of field, although Fuji do not offer enough lenses to actually take advantage. To sum up my comment: for the sake of image quality you don’t need a new camera you could use a Nikon d850 or an iPhone. It is all about the user experience.

Hey Alex👋! I completely agree to your findings. When Fuji introduced the GFX 50 R I felt a little bit of a GAS itching. But then I thought “Where will I show the photos I’ll take with the camera?”, and it was clear to me that most of the pics will be shown on the net. And as you’ve pointed out clearly - there the medium format advantage will be gone! Since 2014 I shot mft cameras, APS-C cameras and fullframe cameras. And when I look at these pictures on my iPad Pro I can hardly tell which photo has been shot with wich camera. So, I think your conclusion is very reasonable: As long as one is not shooting professionally for a customer with specific demands that make it necessary to use a medium format camera, it doesn’t make sense to invest in medium format. And specifically as someone who is into streetphotography I can say that the sensor size is more or less irrelevant for my personal style of photography. Thanks for the video😉👋!

Having the latest and greatest doesn’t prop up our egos. At the same time medium format used to create beauty may be more useful in the distant future as technology increases. If we can save the best files somehow without corruption, long after we’re dead they may bring that beauty to generations hence. In reality this type of photographer does not exist. So for those who want the ultimate image quality it still makes more sense to buy the larger sensor and larger glass. The A1 is more expensive than the GFX 100s and you will need equally expensive and heavy Sony lenses …for no gain at all.

Nice video Alex. I agree with you on where most of our images are displayed at the end. I have brought my 36MP Pentax K1 to vacations (for spectacular images) and we ended up using iPhone 10 pics my wife took, AND posted on the spot, way before I could get home and process the pics I took for web posting! BTW, I contemplated upgrading to 100S for my clients who want the ultimate in resolution (36MP was not enough!). So, my compromise was to go with the Sony A7R4 both for added resolution (60MP) and better video (4K) capability. Before the switch, I augments my Pentax with some Fuji cameras (and lenses) which I used for video only. At the end, I got tired of carrying two systems and wanted to integrate the two needs into one system with higher resolution, hence the A7R4. These days, I only bring my iPhone to family gathering and social occasions, as the video and photo quality are more than enough for social platforms!

I guessed correctly, the colors the depth of field is just on another level. The canon was typical results, dull colors, so so depth of field, lack of character overall in the shots.

the question should never be if you need the GFX. Do we need a car with 400hp? nobody can ever use the full power of that car., or an appartment with 200sqm, you can easyly live in 1/4th of the size. Or do you need a TV with 75inch? you could easily stay with an old 40 inch. BUT. the people enjoy, and the GFX is to enjoy even for yourselve when you look the files on your Computerscreen even without printing them large. There is also NO reason for posting pictures on Instagram. Why does everybody take pictures and giving them free to the whole world on insta. Take pictures for yourselve and enjoy the beauty of them you can achieve with this awsome camera. And yes, by enjoing the awsome imagequality, this makes you using the camera more and this makes you a better photographer. using an iphone will never make you a better photographer.

Big commercial companies pay big money for the best photos so medium format is the best but for the average weddings a canon r6 is fine so the average joe blogs doesn’t know or even care but commercial photography is all about medium format 💪🏻 it’s more than full frame!!

I still love the look of the 15 year old fuji s5 pro 12MP max in reality it was probably a 6MP I take it out every so often and shoot and side by side newer cameras it still wins in looks without pixel peeping also no editing right out of the camera can be used to web. Just very slow good for work that is not moving around so much.

I do really like yours video, and all what you have said is true and still there is that unfeeded hunger to own the top of the line, that gear fetishism which never ends, because the industry is given us always new goals to dream of, and to be honest, I'm just a little hobbyist but I'll save the money and get me a 100s. And if it's only for that stupid, unnecessary selfish feelings of satisfaction and happiness,.... Hopefully it will last a while.

I've got the GFX100s and like you say nothing can challenge its details at 16 bit. I read a lic plate from half a mile. But if your only doing web stuff its a waste. If your doing for say P&G shampoo shot they would demand 100mp or more. They want to see every strand of hair and not muddy images .

Comparing medium format and only talking about the megapixels its a huge miss service to the medium format sensor size. Would you use a crop sensor size, camera if the megapixels were the same? Maybe not because full frame look, well the same here, full frame is a step up from crop sensor, same full frame to medium format. You dont need 100mpx at all, but bigger sensor and 16bit color for the color management and image manipulation. Then there is a difference. Megapixels are irrelevant in most cases. You could’ve made the same video comparing the r5 to the r6 and arrive at the same conclusion.

And I have 😆 the fact is people aren’t paying attention. Medium format has its place, and I am not disagreeing with that. I have photographed over 100 weddings and not a single client can tell what camera was used. My entire point was not to buy a camera for GAS, and only buy it if you truly need what medium format has to offer. In my “field” it’s not necessary. I am not bashing or saying medium format is not worth it for other genres. That point is being forgotten clearly.

Sorry. But on the internet images do look similar due to compression, artifacts etc. I own the Fuji X system together with the GFX 50r and the 100s and just between the 50r and 100s I can tell the difference. But hey, I’m not an internet photographer; I’m been shooting medium format since 1982 and there most certainly is a difference in quality.

Great talk! I totally agree with your points. There's something special and engaging in the experience of using a Fujifilm in general and especially their medium format cameras for their quality.. but once the images go around the web or Whatsapp, much of the quality goes away. I personally aspire to print very large prints one day, until that day comes full frame or even apsc will do a great job!

Why even shoot with R6, I can get same shots with APS-C, smaller, lighter, cheaper. I only had 5dmk3 when I moved to Fuji XT1, I was amazed at what Fuji can do. Canon had no viable mirrorless options for so many years. Sold my Canon FF gear and started shooting Fuji. When Fuji announces GFX50s, I wanted to give it a shot and bought one. Slow AF but man those files were sublime. Better than any FF camera till date. Now GFX100s is a step up from GFX50s with much better eye AF and IBIS. AF is still not as good as say a Sony but not bad. For portrait needs, I can get almost 100% in focus shots at f1.7 (f1.2 FF equivalent with 4:3 crop).

Only buy medium format if you need insane cropping power (FF DSLRs are matching a larger number of MF cameras in this dept), if you are printing mega huge or need 16bit files for precise color control. if your work is primarily viewed on a screen literally any FF or crop sensor camera is more than sufficient . Your throwing money away if only put MF images on the web. Social Media Compression absolutely destroys any benefit medium format gives you.

So, you can change to 3:2 the fujifilm in camera, second you don't compare final images and add a preset on top of it, that is not comparison of what the camera is good for, have you seen the raw files fuji camera has? I can use a 8mp camera and show you is better than r6 20mp...why you put the images everywhere and shrink them, make your own web page, anything you post on Instagram and FB is not your anynore....

First guess: you did not watch your own footage on a 4K screen/TV. R6 images are sharper, her face has texture, on the fuji it's just smooth skin. And lightroom is crap and it is showing 20 MP cameras like 720p images in the preview. Try the same in Capture one. You will be not able to tell apart.

You might as well shoot APS-C for facebook or instagram. If he shot with the x-t4, with 50mm f/1, nobody would be the wiser. Also your pictures are just a model in front of obliterated background. If you had something more complex you gain so much flexibilty. You won't be able to crop with the R6 like you can in medium format which can very much be useful in so many professional situations, or even as deliverables for companies that can then crop certain bits for certain uses across the web. Also you mention a billboard which doesn't need high mp in the first place. Only large prints you see up close need the high mp. The high mp in ff and especially MF is mostly good for crop-ability. This video is not useful other than to say people don't need much at all to make web photos, just a fast lens because the gear head circle jerk just wants to look at image after image of fake smiles with a blown out background.

You shouldn't be losing deepth of color because you're looking to a smaller size, right? I would love a more scientific take on this comparision to see if something is actually going on or is everything in the eye of the beholder. Words like "magic" are meaningless... can or presets, not optimized for the Fuji, take away from the color and it's special caracter? Does the profile color have an impact? sRGB holds less information than Adobe 1998, can that be a factor on the apparent lost of quality? I'm a Canon R6 shooter, but it's strange what you're describing about the Fuji. If the quality is so apparent in the inicial files, it shouldn't just dissapear.
