Hi Nik I have owned a Mercedes since 2009 and have gone to a private mechanic because they are a lot cheaper than Mercedes. As I have moved recently the local dealer told me off the record where to go for a cheaper service.

Nice video thanks Nick. If I could throw a spanner in the works. Customers aren’t obligated to go back to a dealer for service and it’s the customers choice on who works on their car. Nor should they be thrown a carrot to get free roadside assist. The customer has the consumer right to visit any dealer for warranty work and the dealer to honour the work providing the car has been services as per MB requirements. The care plan is similar to having a fleet vehicle. The company arranges a quote and a service cost on that vehicle for let’s say 5 years. The company pays for the car and the driver drops the car off and has the car serviced without changing money. An important note here: pay attention to the service advisors and service managers when they ring you. Dealers are known for upsells and selling you things that’s not required or needed and is not part of the so called service plan. Eg: wheel alignments and rotation of the wheels. You need to weigh up the service plan cost as a pose to your mechanic down the street. You would find his labour rate would be half of the dealers and parts as well. I’ve been a fixed ops manager for over 30 yrs and I know how dealers works. I threw a lot of that gimmick crap out the door cause I saw my customers getting ripped off and they didn’t know it was happening. Customers do your homework before you jump into the water. Trade off 3 dealers against each other on that new car and watch the dollars roll off as they beg you to buy their car.

I have a 2018 C350e and after looking at the prices for A and B service my jaw dropped on the floor! I mean seriously how can you justify that cost? I changed every filter (except fuel, cause it’s in the tank) engine and transmission oil, brake fluid, spark plugs,rear brake pads, rear prop flex disc for less then £600 last year and this year im just going to change the engine oil and filter. Always remember people, Your car is only safe with you. If you can, do whatever it needs by yourself or get it done by a person you fully trust. I had a very bad experience at Hedins Mercedes in Sydenham.

I took out a service plan for 4 services it made sense in the long run, monthly payments are better than a lump sum payment, my local indy garage were only £40 cheaper than mercedes and did no payment plan (his loss) did not know about the roadside assistance so just enquiring about that now . cheers

Nick, you should look at a Mercedes dealer list of items done with a A & B service. The exact same list with a price difference. Some dealers include cabin filters and windshield wipers on the B service. Engine filters, fuel and air, and brake fluid flush are separate line items and can make a B service go over $900 US. M1 is $25/5 US quarts but MB service charges $8+/qt or $30+ over the shelf price, not their wholesale price. Everything else is inspections and fluid (washer, brake, power steering) checks. So I change my own oil, check my fluids and change my filters. About two hours of work once a year. With flat rate you can pay double for R&R of the intake system to have air filters and a fuel filter changed on my 642 diesel.

It can be quite complicated comparing all models for servicing so to make it easy I only picked one of the most popular. But good to know! I guess it varies round the world too!

Great video - thanks for covering this which was an earlier request! On the monthly plan, you do need to factor in that if you return your car before the last service is due the saving versus paying as you go isn’t quite as generous. For example, if you took out a 4 year plan on a 4 year car lease, you might only need to pay for 3 services if you returned the car before the 4 years were up.

Cheers for this Nick. Perfect timing too as we pick up our new C class next week. Had the service plan with our CLA & are taking one for the C class as we knew we saved money but didn't know exactly just how much. I don't know if all Mercedes garages do this but the one we use in Glasgow also picks your car up from you home or work & returns it too you the same day after any service meaning you don't have to take time off work when service is due. Which is a nice touch 🙂

Martinb, I have just traded in my GLA for a GLC and was told I can claim back the unused service plan payments I have made. Will have to put the money straight towards new service plan for the GLC, which is double the cost of the GLA.

When I brought my A200 from Portugal's main Mercedes dealership I requested a 4 year maintenance package they won't very keen on me getting that and in the end I demanded it. I paid 1,200 euros and it has saved me lots as the normal price here without it is 739 euros for a service. Every year I visit for its service they automatically place a tick in the box as without maintenance and when I collect the car I always have an issue over this. Once my 4 years is up I will go else where for a service as I get very fed up with all the issues it has caused. You wouldn't believe what I went thru requesting this and the amount of paperwork I had to sign and after a few months they wanted me to sign more paper work at that point I refused. I believe here in Portugal they never offer the maintenance package.

Thanks Again Nick, another clear and thorough run through of the subject :) I'm due the first service since I bought a 2019 A200 (still only 9,000 mls) and had the Service Plan quote: £40 pcm for 4 years hard to argue against this. Yes, it does include annual MoTs now, so another £50 p.a. 'saved'. I guess it's to MB's advantage if you do need work to pass the MoT as they will likely get to do it (tho' you are permitted to drive a failed vehicle to other place for fixing and re-test.). But how likely is it to fail ? not likely at all I'd say. (My other car of 22 years only failed once I think - Alfa Romeo Spider 2.0 Twin-spark!). There is a £45 cancellation fee if one wanted out ... most likely reason would be selling the car. You're right to high-light the benefit of the included Roadside Assistance - this costs me way over £100 p.a. (even with many years loyalty discount and a lot of hard bargaining) and does not include Europe of course, you have to pay by the day extra for that so it could add up to a lot over a year, if you like to drive over there (which I do ;) The Plan also reduces cost on some of the 'recommended' consumables. E.g. I notice there's an option on my next service pay-as-you-go quote (following that link you gave below here somewhere...) to opt out of replacing the brake fluid as it's only 'recommended'. This would save £150 almost - a temptation you won't be troubled by if on the Service Plan as it's included regardless ;) Probably the biggest benefit these days is going to be fixing the prices at 2023 labour rates - even if an independent service centre was half the price of MB right now there's no way they won't have doubled in even three years let alone four!

Love your videos thank you from across the pond. The service plan is tacked onto the sales invoice and there's interest that needs to be factored into this. The average car loan in the US right now is 72 months. Using the same numbers someone with great credit the difference might be about £20 less. Someone with marginal credit and an extended payment schedule could end up paying a lot more. For me the savings is about 25% but only because I prepaid the service by increasing my down payment.

Hey G W, thank you! Ah yeah this is where it varies massively. In the UK, it’s a direct debit and not linked in anyway shape or form to the car finance so is a completely separate payment.

Another great one Nick. A few points though from a customer point of view. I’ve got the service plan and extended warranty. My overhead centre unit that has climate control fan, sunroof controls, Mercedes Me button etc. failed under the 3yr warranty it failed again three months later they said as the car is out of warranty I have to pay as when in new warranty period no parts warranty apply outside the car warranty if fitted during warranty period. I said but I have extended warranty they said Oh ok free then. This was Brooklands which by the way has been taken over along with Croydon Dartford and West Bromley by Hedin Automotive so no longer Mercedes, why? bit of a shock so I will have to go to Ascot branch. Takeover 1st March this year.

Hey Jasbo 72, yes as I mentioned it will vary massively depending on model, mileage, age etc If it was due an MOT then that sounds like it was either 3 years old or over 3 years old meaning there will be additional items to cover which I would guess at that price probably includes the change of Transmission Fluid and a couple of extra things like an Air Filter or something similar. That would push the price up quite a bit which would explain why it was higher than just an A Service.

Sad day last Friday. I had to sell my 2016 Mercedes S500. I'd bought it a year earlier and it came with a third-party warranty. On expiration of it I asked to extend it, they refused. I'd made no claims but they weren't interested. I asked another third-party warranty company who also declined. I asked Mercedes if I could get back into the "up-to-12-years-of-age" warranty they offer, but they wouldn't let me back in. The car was nothing but perfect and had its last service in November with zero codes found and zero fixes required. But still I wasn't welcome back into the warranty. I had no option but to sell. I couldn't drive round in an originally priced 157 grand car with no warranty, that'd be crazy. This time I've gone back to the dark side and got a BMW (X3) but I'll no doubt be back with Mercedes again. It stands at 8 BMW's and 7 Mercedes now. Doesn't make much sense to stay subscribed, but good luck with the channel. It was always entertaining. 🖖

I have a 2017 s550 coupé I bought new ( it cost a lot more than yours as it has the expensive options, Sky magic roof, exclusive designio interior, night vision and high end stereo, plus lesser options totalling over $20k). I did not buy the extended warrantee. It has 49k and is perfect! I had the paint corrected last year ( it’s obsidian black and shows all defects and scratches ) and ceramic coated. If you drive an S class, you should be able to pay for maintenance and repair. I would never buy a second hand BMW. But that’s just me. Good luck with your car as I hear they are more problematic after the warrantee period.

@@fh6258 There's being able to afford the bills and wanting to pay them. I watched too many youtube videos of older S classes randomly hitting you with 5-10 grand bills. I try and avoid those. My new car is a 3yo X3 with 2y premium warranty. I'll be out of that before that ends.

@@veemacks7255 yes, I have seen a few of the videos but they are the 2 generations before the ones we have/had. Their air suspension goes on all those! The generation before 2013 did not have these issues. And the 2013-2020 are good cars if people look after them. There is an Australian ( re driven ) who tested the 2015 s500 (v6 engine) and it did not have any mechanical issues, they were the wheels and run flat tires. I wrote him that the interior defeats ( wear and tear) he found in that test car should have been all taken care of at the dealer with the 4 year warranty. ( you could see how the leather ( non nappa like mine ) was shinny as he had an inexperience detailer put product like armour all ( you need to take care of your possessions….lol). My dealer ‘s service manager advised me against buying the extended warranty ( I am in Canada so the warranty is 4 years or 80k kilometres). My car is is extremely low mileage (49k kilometres) as I am not around a lot and I only have normal annual service appointments. I did prepay for these so it’s nice coming out with a zero bill. I only had to change my rear brakes at $1250 plus taxes at 47K. So far it has worked in my favour as I did not have expensive repairs or paid over $8000 for a 3 year service contract. The service manager said you are driving an S class, should you have expensive issues, MB will probably assist. I used to drive v8 E classes, but what a difference the S class is, there is not as much difference besides size and equipment between a C and E class, but the s class is the automotive benchmark and the coupé was the hallo for the S class. I presell my car to friends or neighbours as they are waiting for it. It goes through the dealer as a convenience trade -in at a value I sold the car so I save on sales taxes ( you then only pay the net difference for the new car versus the trade in ).If my cars were not in such condition, ( I do charge a premium and no one minds because they know what they are getting), do you think I would do such a thing? You just have to find someone like me who looks after their cars……lol. I would never sell a problematic car. The buyers know that….

Main Dealer Servicing. Hi Nick, I am on my third Mercedes but found main dealer servicing always turned up about £1000-00 of issues no-one was aware of. Thats why i use good quality independants. Anyone else out there come across this situation.

Air balance basically is a fancy air freshener in the glovebox and an air ioniser. Basically uses high voltage to improve air quality. I did feature it in a Mercedes car review recently (very briefly)

Thank you for the video! But I still don't get it why the service care plan is cheaper than paying upfront? What's the deal for Mercedes? The plan is pre-defined for every particular car. It's the same job that has to be done. So why doing the same job would cost differently depending on how I pay? Do Mercedes dealers want to lose money getting me on a service plan? My local dealership wanted me to sign this service care plan (and yes it's a contract), but they couldn't explain why exactly they take less money for same job if sign the plan rather than pay them upfront each time. It' didn't feel right, so I refused. I am still looking at it as a possibility, I just want to understand what's the deal here, cuz people usually don't charge less money when they can charge more.

Hey Alex, thank you glad you enjoyed it! Just double check it’s the official Mercedes Service Care Plan. I don’t think dealer groups offer their own version but the Mercedes one can be cancelled at anytime. Any amount (if applicable) that hasn’t been used can be refunded although if you’ve just used a service on the plan, you might not have anything to refund so bear that in mind. All the details about the plan are found on the Mercedes-Benz website 👍🏼

I ran into the same issue and the sales guy wanted to add the cost to the financing of the car. He told me I would save money because the cost of the plan might go up, but I just wanted to pay when it's time to service the car. I don't want to add it to the car payment because of the finance charge I would have to pay for the service plan.

Hi Nick, Another useful video on servicing but what really bugs me is the 'annual' bit, especially for very low mileage owners. By this I mean 5K miles annually maximum and probably less. Having to traipse into a dealer and cough up with year on year increments like this seems like a massive waste of time, money and natural resources. The system fails to accommodate such owners and only seems to threaten warranty invalidation for non compliance. I've been thinking about a new A200 but I see the BMW 118M servicing interval is much wider at 2 yearly / 19K miles whichever first. I'd agree with brake fluid change every 2 years because it's hygroscopic (absorbs water) but no way with modern engine oils especially with such low mileage. Probably outside of scope for your videos

Hey Edward, no worries glad you enjoyed it! Ah all cars are like that with an annual service or mileage limit for service. My only guess is that engines can be complex in the engine bay especially with Mild Hybrid tech appearing in the modern engine. Of course there can be many variables when an end user then uses a car. Mercedes state for most of their cars it’s yearly or every 15k miles (whichever comes first) to back their warranty. I guess it all depends, if a car is not being used at all and been driven a mile or two each day with the engine barely getting warm, that probably wouldn’t be good for it if it was doing that for months on end, hence why oil changes on a service would be good.

I just took delivery of my new c43 amg last week and I turned down the service plan. I estimate I will put around 40k miles on the car in the next 4 years and I’m assuming from past experience that my services will consist of oil changes, an air filter or two, and maybe a cabin air filter. I was quoted $3000 up front for all of that which just seemed extremely overpriced

Hello Nick. I have been a loyal client at my local Mercedes dealer since buying the E250 CDI eleven years ago. They do a good job but yesterday I asked that they step up a notch and at least clean up the local area where the work was performed. If they are going to remove and clean the injectors they can very well pass a rag over the rocker covers and local area whiles its exposed. Did I overstep the boundaries of client shop relations?

​@@npoleary well, the car runs smoothly and the power has returned but there was no extra clean up. Cost 10% more than previewed. It was quite encrusted. Took a half day of meticulous cleaning before removing the injectors. Its an expensive garage. I wish that they did something extra to demonstrate the value. They should have a vacuum and glass cleaner person or something. Service is a changing experience.

Also having the services done by the main dealer can affect the trade in value, as full Mercedes service history means it can be sold on as Mercedes approved used.

I’ve both. Both are different products, service plan is used annually when you service the car like oil, filter change. Warranty is when things go wrong covers such as when your car is still covered in the 3 year warranty.

Never knew about a service care plan. I think I purchased a 4 year plan when we brought our C-Class last year. Is there a way I can tell if I did?

Nick, can you provide first hand info about electric tailgate option in W177. Does a-class have it? What is the code in MB configurator?

Hey eMike, sadly I can’t help with exacts specifics but your local Mercedes can let you know what’s available. When filming the cars though on reviews, I haven’t seen an electric tailgate option on A-Class. I believe it’s B-Class, CLA Shooting Brake & GLA. There are other models too but those ones are similar to A-Class.

Hi jodi3767! Ah that's new! I'm literally just reading about it now. It has changed quite significantly since I made this video at my local Mercedes dealer. Looks like their ServiceCare plans now include MOT's which is cool and then the CompleteCare seems to include what they say 'Wear & Tear' (although this excludes tyres from the looks of it). So my presumption is that it includes brakes pads and disc and wipers but I would advise to speak with someone who works at Mercedes to see the full list. I also noted that some form of warranty was offered too which is interesting! Sadly wasn't available last year when I bought my car so must be a really new thing!

How does the care plan work? Do you have to pay the whole amount off before you can service the car ?

No you can pay monthly or in one lump sum. It’ll be serviced while you pay if you do monthly by direct debit.

Ah so when I made this video I researched pricing with my local dealer. You’ll just need to ask them and they can give it to you and work it out.

Hey Nick, it appears the EQS service plan is £31 per month for a 4 year policy, with 25k miles per year. That’s £372 per year, £1488 over the 4 years. **ON A FULLY ELECTRIC CAR** 🙄 That feels like a lot of cash, with not much return, other than breakdown cover renewal? What do you think?

Ah okay, I mean I’ve not really looked at the cost of EV servicing as when I made this video I don’t think Mercedes dealerships had even serviced an EQS or many newly released electric cars at the time. I don’t know how much pay as you go servicing is for an EQS, have you asked Mercedes at all?

Really sorry I don’t work on cars mechanically so I don’t know what the impact would be on the drive. I would always advise fitting the exact tyres that are on the car to prevent problems.

In the UK new cars (within the first year of registration) have slightly cheaper service care plans. Same price online vs a Mercedes showroom 🤓

Well, I live in the Costa Blanca and have a Mercedes e class 220D (2019) with 22,000 km (13,600 miles) I was a loyal customer to the main dealer here and in the UK, Two years ago I had a B service, I was charged €1300 last year an A service at the dealer. This year it was due a B service again and I wasn't going to be ripped off again. I did the service myself which was the first time I had ever worked on a car, I am 64 years old. I spent time on KZbin learning everything I could about servicing the car. I must have saved close to €1000. I replaced the oil with Mercedes oil 229.52 and filter. I replaced the Air filter I replaced the engine pollen filter I replaced the cabin pollen filter I replaced the brake fluid with Mercedes Dot 4+ I replaced the fuel filter( under the car) I also replaced the rear brake pads with ATE OE pads(not needing to be changed) Brakes even better then before. I also replaced the front wiper blades Do you know the satisfaction of knowing that it was done properly is the best thing and with the proper oil than hoping that Mercedes had even done a proper service, I have found two screws missing on the air intake pipe, also one clip on the air filter not fixed and the air filter itself not properly in place. This service is easy people have a go yourselves.😊

The problem with expensive cars is they are expensive. Not better. More expensive. Good maintenance of equipment is necessary to keep it running well. Expensive maintenance is expensive. If you purchased your vehicle new or early in its life, preventive maintenance is worthwhile. If you purchased an old Mercedes plan for a lot of expensive problems as a precaution. Plan to spend whatever you paid for the used vehicle up front in two or three years again. Or buy Toyota.

Mercedes Roadside Assistance: Waited an over an hour and a half after damaging a low profile tyre sidewall on a pothole when I was setting off on holiday only to be told by RAC to whom MB subcontract that they were only authorised to take the vehicle to the a Mercedes garage, which was many miles in the wrong direction, did not stock a replacement tyre and would then have to get it in from a tyre supplier. I had a ferry to catch. Luckily my separate holiday Insurance called out the AA who fitted a replacement tyre within an hour. No spare on most cars these days presumably to save the weight and space for the 30 litres of adblu you have to carry around with instead. What are you supposed to do if you are in an area without a phone signal?

I have it on my current car that I bought from Mercedes Poole and as long you plan on servicing at a main dealer then yes it can do. I believe some of the newer plans (since I made this video) offer MOT’s included or something as well now.
