Is Metacam Safe for Cats? (reducing pain killer side effects in cats)

I took a 12-year-old rescue cat for a dental, he had a pre-op blood test which appeared fine, he was several pounds overweight and highly strung, howled during travel and the vet had him there from 8:30am and didn't begin unitil 5:20pm. The vet overprescribed the oral solution (after giving an injectible post-operatively), prescribing it for 7 days when the oral solution should be used 'up to 4 days' post-operatively, it says this on the drug sheet, which I wish I'd read first. All of this was prescribed to his actual body weight, not his optimum, so another overdosing potentially occurred there. Within 4 days his appetite started to slowly go, and he went into renal failure. Across the second week he became bloated and the vet's insisted this was a "coincidental" thing, a UTI and urine backed up to his kidneys, ignoring the sequence of events and their overdosing. I believe by then he was dying, and being a naturally edgy cat he developed stress cystitis. He had to be put to sleep. The British vet's dole this out like a cure-all and then when there's a contraindication they have another explanation, so it does not get reported. The US FDA has the right idea, they've banned the oral solution for cats. No animal of mine will ever have this stuff again.

No it didnt at all and it made him sick :/ The vet gave him Metacam to help for his wounded paw (bad reception after a jump) My cat was vomiting all night long and we immediatly stopped to gave him Metacam. He just had it once and he was vomiting for almost 3 days. If he ate, he would vomit in the next two hours. We made a blood analys and thankfully his organs are okay and he recovered. But after all... Our cat was sick for 3 days because of the Metacam... And only suffered less than two days because of his paw. It may be great, but not for all cats. Be carefull !

This has made my kitten extremely Sick she still not better!! My kitten Bubbles who Is 4months old came in with a uti, I had asked the vet for antibiotics, they told me she needed an injected dose of medacam and a follow up with the oral medacam for 7 days and after a week if she was still in pain she could have the antibiotics… My kitten has a liver shunt condition which mean to can’t process a lot of things through her liver. She also has a history of reacting badly to to medication with side effects. the vet knew about this, I asked: if there were any risks, the vet said no and it was perfectly safe and the safest thing she didn’t mention any alternatives. Bubbles came home and had been constantly vomiting large amounts of blood, passing large amounts of diarrhoea filled with blood, Urinating large amounts of blood. she has been drooling at the mouth hasn’t been able to stand up or use her back legs and is very drowsy and collapsing. I read the leaflet in the box, which says clearly ‘do not give to cats with a liver condition!’ Also I believe it is advised NOT to give to kittens, I took her back to the vets who are refusing to acknowledge any of this and told me ‘ahaha you can’t believe everything on Google!’ Like I’m an idiot, this isn’t Google it’s with the leaflet in the medacam box the official medacam website and UK government official website warned about the side effect and appropriate use. This pain killer is used for cat in serious pain after a surgery for an elderly cat with joint problems, they prescribe this to my kitten who had a very common urinary infection which could have been treated with antibiotics which is what I had asked for in the first place. She is high risk as she has a liver shunt and a history or reacting badly to medication. They should definitely not be giving this stuff out in the uk as freely as they do, I’m so disgusted I wasn’t warned about any of this. I believe they gave this to her so I would spend more money on drugs that they knew wouldn’t work even though there were high risks. I was charged about £500 after the two visits and I don’t even know if this has caused her life long damage to her kidneys.

After an oral surgery that my male cat had had (teeth extraction), he was very slow, lost his appetite, was moving like if he was living in a dream. Sometimes, for a few moments, he was looking at me like if he didn’t see me. And sometimes, for a sec I saw a recognition in his eyes, but than, quickly, it was disappearing. Today, after his third day of using this medicine, he has started to vomit with an acid and than with a little piece of food that he ate. He was supposed to take this for four days in a row, but I do not see any sense in doing so. I’m very concerned. So for now, I’ve decided, that I am not going to give him the last dose, which is supposed to be tomorrow. And if he still will be unable to eat and will vomit, I will definitely call the vet, because all I’ve read about this medicine is making me very very afraid for my cat’s life.

Same here, i saw that your comment was 2 years ago, how is your cat doing now ? Is there a way to reverse or take meloxicam out of a cat system (three doses) ? I will never forgive myself if something happens to my beloved cat.

@@sem9213so glad your cat is doing well. I am very anxious about my cat, he was given 3 doses of meloxicam, one dose prior dental surgery, one dose during surgery, and one dose the day after surgery, he just vomited hairballs with digested food at dawn and i am panicking. I had researched almost everything prior surgery and switched three vets and still missed out on the danger of giving meloxicam for cats. I simply cant trust any vet.

I'm intrigued by this. I have another question I cannot seem to find an answer to. My cat has very wet sneezing that has been an ongoing issue for several years. We cannot find the cause and he is itherwise in great health but I know he's uncomfortable when this occurs. A homeopathic liquid I found worked well but has since been discontinued. My vet reluctantly agreed to let me try a compounded benadryl transdermal gel. It seems to work ok, but not completely. The vet didn't think it would work at all as benadryl is most commonly used for skin conditions in pets. I have asthma and the use a duo-neb for it. I discovered after my cat sat next to me during one if my treatments that he seemed to be better afterwards. I presume he accudentally inhaled some. The vet seemed to think it could be wise to give him a few short inhalations. I am still deeply concerned as nothing helps completely. Is there something else you'd suggest for this? I'd be sincerely grateful for ANY imput. Thank you.

Inhalers are used in cats with asthma, but this doesn't normally cause sneezing but rather coughing and shortness of breath. The most common cause of chronic sneezing + nasal discharge is viral, with herpes and calicivirus being the prime offenders, fungal disease can be really tricky to diagnose and allergies of other problems can be variable in how well they respond to treatment. Unfortunately the nose is a difficult place to examine and sample and even with flushing, rhinoscopy, biopsy and MRI a diagnosis can be elusive with trial treatments then needed to find something that works

My cat has DeveloDevelop Some sort of twitching now and again, since metacam.. I looked it up it seems heaps of people have reported a link between metacam and twitching,, I quickly massage him .it stops it. But bit scary.. Also- I know u say its not a sedative but there is defanatly a change in him.. And his eyes started that 3rd eye thing.. I've since seen a new vet, after fixing my cats leg myself under the most sterile conditions. I got the inflammation down by 30/40% and reduced the puss by 90% .. I bought every variety of food u could think of to help his cells reproduce best .and the new vet told me, he doesn't need matacam any more, or antihistamine .and now his fur looks better than ever , his eyes are clearer,, so I'm in 2 minds about metacam.. Yes maybe for very short short term . but maybe something not so toxic would b better (because as u kno it smells pretty potent, I hope I haven't done any permanent internal damage, as he had a u.t.i years ago n probably has issues already

My almost 14 year old sterilized ginger female put on Meloxicam by vet for arthritis. I feel it definitely helped but after a few days she showed really skittish behaviour..running away from me, looking like I frightened her, showing no affection. I spoke to my sister who is a vet nurse and she said stop medi. After reading about it all I wonder if it wouldn't be better to keep her on the Meloxicam if it helps her pain and put aside my sadness at no affection. Or is it causing her to stress by having the medi.

I had one of my pet cat surgery done n was given Melonix I believe is a same drug with different name and she passed away in less then a week post surgery. Then I had another cat with a mouth enjury & had caught maggots n was in terrible pain so the vet cleaned the worms n she was crying in pain so have her same drug n she passed away the same night that is few hours ago today...

Blinkys Studio I'll give u a link that helped me in what to look for a little bit.. What's wrong with ur cat exactly are u in south Australia.. I ended up finding the nicest vets that had 100% good reviews on google and were a small businesses so what they recommend was for the animal ,not for the money for tests etc.. Not only that, they were hundreds of dollars cheaper! ..

Seriously I had to emergency put my little girl down of 15 years about 15 months ago and still have barely recovered .. now my boy of 8 years having issues and emergency x rays with a torn ligament on an old fractured leg so he is limping bad .: your story has definitely given me enough proof and multiple research that I will be throwing this out without even opening the package and look to alternative sources. I live in Canada so I will stick with cbd oil for pets for now

Mine too. Metacam/Melonex/Meloxicam is dangerous for cats. She would have recovered on her own or lived longer had I not used it. I am extremely sad. Not owning a pet again.

@ROSCHE Same problem here. My cat stopped eating and pooping, then started vomiting and shaking. She passed away. Not your fault. We are not animal doctors. Vets should be careful while prescribing these medications.
