I love the moments when metalhead guys are 'call me out' saying I'm a poser and that I should go back to listening to pop and stuff like that, as a female its both annoying and unproductive because, all metal girls can attest to this, we'll school you with our endless knowledge of the culture and the community. I love how you don't even associate those guys with being metalheads, just misogynists who happen to listen to metal music.

Gender roles/norms/stereotypes are terrible. If you are a girl that likes metal and is interested in death and gore, then that is great. Also if you are a guy that likes to read romance novels and is interested in colorful art and poetry, then that is also great. why should you be discouraged from doing something that you like because of your gender? Be whoever you are, not who others say you should be. "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined" (Henry David Thoreau (AKA really confusing writer that we read in high school but has some good quotes)). Follow your interests.

Andrasté Reminiec Yeah. Environment plays about a 50% influence in our behavior (rest is heredity). Everything around us plays a major part in shaping our thoughts and behavior. Males may be praised for doing "manly" (hate that word) things while women may be praised for doing feminine things (social learning theory). Gender norms are also dependent on culture (gender schema theory). A lot of us then accept those roles/norms (gender typing). But should we really base our actions on that? we should have the ability to reject our roles. After all, we have rejected our evolutionary role (just to produce offspring). Our society allows us to pursue other roles. Just following what everybody wants you to do is boring. Life is too short to just follow the crowd. Use the 80 years (about) that you have to be different, explore, and experience. Don't limit yourself because something deviates from the norm. Be the person you want to be. Be an individual. "The meaning of life is to give life meaning."-Ayreon......might have gotten of topic...But yeah. Roles/norms are like traditions: They are not rules and they do not have to be followed. In some cases, it is best to do away with them... tl;dr: Fuck it. Live your life. Give it meaning. Bleg Bleg bleg.

I think we may not generalize the issue. My girlfriend plays bass in a melodic death metal band and and she kicks ass. There is sexism, but it doesn't come from metal. It comes from the values that are prior to metal. So if a guy who listens metal is sexist, means that he would still be sexist if he listened to techno, pop or rap. The bottomline we can establish is that we can find dicks (pun not intended) in any genre.

+Tiago Costa That's true, but with all the sense of supposed community in metal wouldn't it make more sense to fight the values prior to metal instead of helping propagate them in a way unique to metal? There is sexism and stereotypes that are specific to metal, too, so rather than resolving metal of being the source of sexism and being done with the issue, shouldn't we as a community strive to be free of sexism?
@TiagoCostaMusic

Yeah, it makes sense. First, I must establish the following, I live in Portugal and after many years listening and playing Metal, I have came to believe that despite being us having a metal sceene, there is not sense of community. My belief is that each of us is responsible for our beliefs and actions. That is the extent of what we can do, and that's where the change begins.

When i went to my first Slayer concert, i was questioned and "quizzed" on how much i knew about Slayer. And if i didn't know who Darkthrone or Overkill was, i was a groupie. Or a poser. I asked this guy why he was asking me all these questions, and his response was "Because girls like you piss me off. You claim to know this music but you really don't. " This guy had no idea who i was nor even bothered to get to know who i was. It was really rude and just douchy. That he would have that ugly mindset on women who go to Metal Shows. To him, if i couldn't name at least more than one album that i liked from Slayer, i was a poser and a fake. Anyways, i really enjoy your videos. Sexism doesn't come from the fact that male metalheads don't like metalheads women. It's the opposite, mostly. Metalheads guys want metalhead girls, like, what could be better than a woman who listens to his shit, right? But that sucks really hard for us. If you're a metalhead girl, lots of metal guys want to date you. That’s all. A metalheads guys whenever there is a girl in someplace that like the same music as him, the guy never sees or treats her as a friend, as a dude. No, you will always be treated as a woman that they can possibly relate, never as a person who simply likes the same shit. If you are a metalhead girl and go to a concert, an extreme metal concert, and you are the only woman in the whole place, all the guys look at you, again, you are not seen as a metalhead, but as a female metalhead. I love mosh piting and they keep looking at me like and a few of them come talking to me just because I was in the mosh, just like he and his fried were too. Anyoing as fuck. The last Megadeth concert I was like happily mosh piting and a guy just pointed at me as if I were some exotic animal in the zoo. And it is hard to be friends with a metalhead man withoug beeing invited to date. Sometimes I just want to hangout with my metalhead (male) "friends" and listening to Pantera and having a beer without any of them trying something with me . That’s fuckin sexism, man

most of my conversations with male metal heads are pretty respectful and i don't have too many issues. the main problem i've experienced is an abnormal amount of groping at shows (as opposed to mainstream concerts) and some bands disproportionately sexualize violence against women vs men. that's one of the reasons i really like amon amarth and dethklok. they write brutal shit about everyone! equality! metal really doesn't seem more sexist to me than any other genre. everywhere is a boys club i think metal just gets shit for it because everything in metal is more explicit/exaggerated. great video! i always enjoy your level-headed opinions.

>It's one of the industries where women are more overly sexualized No, it's not. It's the complete opposite. Matter of fact, in heavy metal music if you sing about hot chicks or other inessential crap, like fast cars and money, you are seen as corny and lame (see hair metal). You confused metal with pop and rap, where it's often female ''artists'' themselves doing that. It's pretty evident when a band like Steel Panther sings about gross sex stuff and has to be labeled a spoof band in order to not be laughed at while every corny-ass rapper talks about the same stuff but are unironically celebrated for their ''music''.

I think that metal isn't exactly sexist, but I feel like if you are female people think you can't really like it, that if you say you like it you are just a poser, which is probably part of the problem, that and album artwork, like I know White Zombie has an awful lot of naked sexualized women in the album artwork that is a bit uncomfortable for women to look at, and you don't see men being depicted that way as much

I'd trip in the pit or something and there where always five or so guys trying to help me back up. I've also noticed that the guys that I hung around with where always quick to defend me as well. You know what's sexist? Society's 'standards' telling a young girl at an early age that she can't listen to a certain type of music because of her gender. "Metal is boys music." No wonder the male:female ratio is so unbalanced. Although, there are exceptions within the music itself. You said, "Intentionally sexist metal band." Well, just listen to Thy Art Is Murder's first EP. Or any slam metal band. The lyrics/album art can be very off-putting to women. But those are just exceptions.

@ThisIsMaiAccount

+Insightful Lad But there's a difference between the music and the community. Sure, glam lyrics are obviously trying to compensate for something, but the appearance factor of the bands obviously drew a huge female crowd. Even though modern metal is comparatively tame in terms of sexist lyrics, there is still the very clear virgin/whore dichotomy if women are referred to at all in the lyrics, and the community sees a distinct gender imbalance.

Okay so just to clarify: 1. As someone already commented below "Sexism doesn't need to be intentional to exist" 2. Stop asking a metalhead girl to cite "5 songs of the band she has printed on her t-shirt" because she doesn't have to prove you anything. Plus it directly implies that she is a "poser" and therefore, why do you ask her that? You wouldn't ask a metalhead dude if he knew the whole discography of the band t-shirt he wears so treat everyone equally. It just sounds like you're testing her, having a conversation about metal music/music in general is very different than testing someone on their knowledge.

I know you hate it when pop and metal groups/artists cover each other, but hear me out on this. There's this tv show in Finland (idk if other countries have it as well) called Tähdet, tähdet ("Stars, stars") where artists from different music genres compete. Every episode focuses on one of their genres and all the artists have to perform a song from that genre, keeping the original genre. I think the show is pretty great and they always talk about last night's show on Radio Rock, especially when they have a punk/rock/metal episode (otherwise just to talk about how the punk/rock/metal artist(s) did last night). And some of the artists are actually pretty good at doing metal. Then, in every episode people at home vote who should stay and the one with least votes has to leave the competition. Metal musician hasn't won yet, but they've done pretty well. :) The judges are Juhani Merimaa, who owns the most legendary rock music club in all of Finland called Tavastia. Most of the bands who have played there have become hugely successful soon after. Mr Merimaa is just that good at his job, choosing bands people might like but have never heard of. Another judge is Maria Veitola, who has been a music journalist for decades. Idk if she has a focus on any specific genre, I think she has pretty much done it all... Her taste in music also varies "quite" a bit. The third judge is called "genre guru" and it's always someone who really knows the genre they're talking about in that specific episode, usually a musician of that genre. This has really nothing to do with the subject, except that it has both men and women performing metal... But I'm posting this anyway.

The ONLY thing i would deem not even sexist just kind of exclusive is the clothing and merch. Most stuff is straight up TOO BIG and we should be able to wear stuff other than these boxy sizes and having to cut it all up (which ends up making it more metal usually tho) but still. Bigger sizes too as it should go both ways. But patches help a ton in that regard for vests and alot of metal style is formed thru improvising.

I think the only sexism is that women are presumed to only have a shallow interest. For example, only be into alternative bands like avenged sevenfold; black veil brides; my chemical romance; bullet for my Valentine; Evenescence and such like. Tbf, that is generally true in so far as these bands might be gateway bands and they have a big female fan base. These bands have a greater commercial approach and therefore more of a familiar 'pop' style. Women are not encouraged to like extreme music by mainstream culture and so women who do are considered and are exceptional. I've never liked those bands personally, as I just went straight to Deep Purple; Black Sabbath; Judas Priest; Venom; Motorhead; Megadeth; Celtic Frost; Death; Saxon; Saint Vitus; Pentagram; Candlemass etc. Which I've found to be somewhat unique compared to most women my age (18-24), and to an extent ones who into the alternative scene. Oddly many have not listened to the 70s metal bands, which isn't compulsory, but there seems to me a lack of knowledge about them for some reason. Perhaps it just doesn't click with people getting into metal now. Did for me though.

The only thing I keep noticing is that some metal bands use women as lust objects on, for example, album covers or in music videos. If you want to look at male dominance in the metal genre as the result of interests as you mentioned, I think you could say that this is a result of sexism, or gender roles more specifically, rather than being sexism itself. It's still just a fact of life that girls are raised in a much more flowery way, being more kept away from morbid things than boys. It's something that is gradually changing, but for example my mom still tends to try to get my dad from telling me about current events to do with war because "it's too morbid for a girl" (although to be fair my mom and i share a huge interest in horror, she just doesnt like real life horror). tbh i could probably write an essay on a topic like this, but basically what im getting at is that women still tend to be guided away from things that are darker or aggressive as metal tends to be, but it's slowly changing and im sure as time passes we will continue to see more women in metal

I have never experienced the metal community, in my hometown, to being sexist... at least as a whole. I have heard several individual members of the local metal community purposefully sounding sexist and purposefully putting women down and excluding them. One of the worst things I ever heard was "bitches don't belong at metal concerts", to a group of sisters who were in to the bands that were playing that night.

Part of it also involves society, it sets a stigma that men can only like x and women can only like x for example. For some of women who listen to metal they are putting off getting more involved because of what the masses think of their music choices. No one likes being judged and looked down upon so this is part of the problem

If they consider you a sexual being, most guys seem happy with you being around. If not, you'll most likely be tolerated if you have a welcoming personality, but rarely taken into consideration (though this is the general male attitude in my country, so it's not a Metal-only problem). Sometimes it was a bit disappointing for my former overweight self because, as you said, I thought we were supposed to be the outcasts and come together.

Well spoken. I think you bring up some very true points. I do honestly feel a little intimidated by men in metal at times, but most men I've met in the metal community have actually been quite nice and treat me as equal. There are the few bigoted people, but that goes for anything really. As for morbid subject matter, I can see that having a bit to do with it, like you said, most certainly there are women who can get into the more morbid stuff, but personally I like more fantasy/history lyrical content. Though that's something that is good about metal, there is so much variety out there.

I think people see metal as sexist because it can be a hard and brutal style of music and women are seen as fragile and sensitive. I've seen women into darker music or tougher then I am so considering them as little dolls is ridiculous. Metal is for everyone, it is not sexist nor is it xenophobe.

I agree. I think it also has to do with cultural perception of the culture and music, as well as active female representation in at least somewhat visible and well known acts. I think because, especially in the US and Canada, we see metal as this mostly very aggressive, masculine subculture, because these are the most obvious elements in the most well known acts, women don't even think they may enjoy it. From what I understand, female metal fans are more common in Europe, and this probably has to do with cultural perception, as well as female representation in very popular acts there, which are well known here but not to the same degree, such as Nightwish, Epica, Arch Enemy etc. The bottom line is that women relate better to women, and are more likely to be interested in something that they see other women are interested in. In the US and Canada, we don't really have any really popular, well known female representatives in metal that are readily visible to those outside the community. I think an even better example of this is Japan. Japan has an incredibly disproportionate amount of all-female or female fronted heavy rock and metal bands, and it isn't at all uncommon to here what are essentially pure power metal tunes from j-pop artists. I feel like this is largely due to a couple bands that attracted a large female audience early on, like X Japan, and the prevalence of heavy metal influences in anime music, which is often sung by women. There are actually a whole bunch of them, many all-female, and many more female-fronted. Off the top of my head, I can think of 10+ bands. Mostly sort of power metal stuff, but most subgenres are represented somewhere. I actually just got back from a 2 week trip to Tokyo, and it wasn't at all uncommon to see a girl or woman with some sort of metal merch or looking through the metal section of a CD shop, and from what I have heard, they show up to shows there a lot as well. I recall one of the members of Iron Maiden in the Flight 666 documentary talking about how they have never seen more teenage girls at their shows than when they play in Japan. It's a fascinating contrast.

Yeah, but America in particular, has a mainstream media that pushes garbage to dumb people down. Pop music is pushed down our throats on the radio and on commercials. Women who listen to metal, are seen as freaks by other Americans, and automatically are hit with stereotypes, as many average Americans are run by ignorance. I see it a lot, and the ignorance usually comes from people who listen to American pop, rap, and hip hop. If you're a metalhead here in America, you automatically are considered an evil person by ignorant people. The media hates metalheads because we don't buy into their bullshit, so they make a shit ton of crap and stereotypes about us as punishment.

Metalkid1500 Interesting point. I'm not from America, and back home the metal community is virtually nonexistent. I've seen more metalheads of both genders in America, and while we're definitely a fringe/underground group, there is a well-defined group and people know we exist. In other places, not so much. Of course, the traditional "girls shouldn't listen to aggressive music" thing doesn't help me, but there's so little knowledge about it I could walk around in band shirts and get no flack for it.

Honestly, as a girl myself, I think that sexism in metal is just based off of the fraction of the population who like things like pop and clothes/makeup that metalheads generally wouldn't wear. Yes, metalhead girls can be girly, but based off of the women and girls that I see daily, most girls are very girly, generally weaker than some boys but, we are two opposite genders, of course we're different. And I know that most metal bands have male members, it's is usually odd to see women metalheads, but then again there are bands like Arch Enemy who have female vocalists (and other instruments) who are equally as good as any other band. Of course metal is much heavier, darker and has a lot more meaning than most mainstream music such as Justin beiber, and because men generally are the dominant gender, they (I'm guessing) think that metal just brings them to another level of manliness and then seeing a girl in "their" music (maybe) makes them feel challenged or whatever. But I have a ton of metalhead friends who are both boys and girls and we all get alone just fine

I don't think a guy can really say whether or not a group/place/community is sexist towards women because it's not your experience we're talking about. It's one thing that you don't get the feeling the community is sexist - it's a whole other story for women and girls themselves. Although many would probably not recognize sexist treatment from men because we're sadly quite used to it. It's normalized. That being said I don't think the metal community is inherently more sexist than society as a whole, or than you would expect from a group of mostly men. That doesn't mean it isn't sexist, though. The sexism isn't caused by metal somehow though, it's more the fact that it's a group of mostly men and very few women. And the fact that people in that community grew up in the same world as everyone else (so you're bound to always have some people in there with toxic attitudes towards people who are different from them).

I feel like it is a bit like in the gaming community. Most men don´t care who else plays, but then there is individuals who are sexist. And if a woman is in to gaming, some men make it a big deal and some women make a big deal about it. It is kind of similiar with metal. But as I come from the metal country #1, so it is like 50-50 men and women who listens to it. Men do more often have the bands. But at gigs there is as many women and in some cases even more at the shows.

I'm female and have been to a fair amount of metal concerts. The audience has been male dominated but there have always been other women there, on average about 30% are female, I would say. Especially since there has been a surge in female members of bands, particularly vocalists and keyboard/synth players. 'Female fronted metal' (Yes I like that term) is becoming increasingly popular now. In 2006 my music taste was considered by most to be very underground, but now it is more mainstream. I have never had a problem with male metallers at concerts, they have always been very welcoming and are interested to hear what I'm into. I still experience some discrimination from idiotic men from outside the metal community who call me weirdo in the street because I wear a leather jacket and black eyeliner. I've never had a male metalhead be sexist to me in person. It's usually something I only see online. Comments like: "If you're female and listen to metal, you must be fat." Yeah, I happen to carry extra weight... what does that have to do with what I listen to? But I've also heard the same thing about playing video games. Apparently there's no thin women into metal or video games, according to those guys. I had a guy online tell me that I listen to "chick metal" because I enjoy genres that don't include a lot of harsh vocals. I didn't realize that not liking super heavy guttural vocals was strictly a female thing.

Online you don't have to worry about immediate and painful repercussions for saying the wrong thing to the wrong person. So the barrier between you and everyone else can make some people a lot more bold. There are plenty of internet badasses that could probably be beat up by the local 1st grade tee ball team offline. If they even had the nerve to open their mouths in the first place. Maybe they'll dox you. Or threaten to at least. In really bad cases gamers get swatted. But the people calling in the swattings are the biggest losers ever. I really don't look at all like the type of person I really am. And that's one of the reasons why I do not express my interests too much to strangers. I don't feel like dealing with it. I really don't socialise much. So I live in a sort of bubble. Because of that I can be myself a lot. But on the flipside I realise that what I like doesn't equate much to what I look like in the eyes of most people who just see a boring passive librarian type. So I fear getting the million questions thrown at me. I can barely get a sentence out to a stranger. You should never put people on the spot like that. Elitists never seem to realise that no one likes them but other elitists. Actually, I'd think that every elitist would hate every other elitist for not being elitist enough. I think deep down elitist are very insecure. They need to project themselves above others to feel better about themselves. For all we know many online elitists come armed with google so they can search while they angrily tweet/comment at you for not being the real deal because you don't know some arbitrary and useless trivia that no one would care about unless they spent all day online bragging about it to other people. I have a lot of niche interests when it comes to gaming. I might know some useless/boring to most general gamers trivia. But I don't weaponize it against people to elevate my self worth. No one should. It's stupid, pointless and it just makes you look like a dick.

Julia, didn't sexism in music start in the 40s.? the big bands of the era were all guys, the actractive singers were gals... it got worse when rock& roll came in... until 1955 or 1956 rock& roll was a allboys clubs.. the hearts were the first girl group..( Lita ford said it best.. girls who stood there and shook their skirts.) never mind that they could sing.. Until the 70s there weren't very many all girl rock groups... this is also is society's fault, for keeping it going... look at Walmart In the front office..female employees have to put up with sexual harassment... so,it's not only in the music business, but also in the business world.

"Intentional remarks and actions that put one gender below the other." Fair enough, by that definition the metal community isn't sexist. Keep in mind, though, that unless it's happening to you, a lot of the microaggressions are hard to see. And I agree, sometimes women in metal don't exactly give themselves a good name - sometimes it's because the label wants to sell sex, sometimes it's of the person's own volition that they want to present themselves in that way. And it works. Sex sells. Obviously metal is a boy's club. As it is, it's not super easy to get into (especially the more male-oriented subgenres eg. thrash, death and black) - but here's the thing, there's plenty of "girly" themed metal out there - symphonic, power, even doom and atmospheric black etc. should theoretically appeal to women. As for my own personal experiences, I've been interrogated by some "metalhead" who liked Coheed and Cambria, 5FDP and the like. Turns out he hadn't heard of At the Gates, In Flames, Omnium Gatherum, Insomnium, Bathory, Emperor, Burzum and the like. On the other hand, I've met super nice metalheads who are not fans of my favourite subgenres but great human beings nonetheless. In response to your comment about those few sexists, I think it'd be a lot easier for women to join the community were everyone else more against bullshit sexist comments - if you see ANY type of bullshit, be it racist, sexist, prejudiced, or unfair, I urge you to CALL IT OUT. Don't pander to idiots, bigots, or even "fans" that reflect badly on the community. It'll definitely make the community better.

I don't think metal has ever really been sexist-per-se. Metal is very masculine and testosterone-filled by nature, so it naturally appeals more to men. But, when you look at a lot of bands that are female-lead(like Warlock, Arch Enemy, Chastain, etc), the front-women for those bands are very well-regarded, and practically deified. I think the metal community is generally equal-opportunist. Look at the success Babymetal is having, and the support they're getting from big-name bands and legends. And that's a band fronted by 3 teenage girls.

I don't know how it is in your area with female metal musicians but we have a decent amount that aren't necessarily singers in Chicago. Good points. Some might think metal to be sexist because of some metal sing about women as sex toys. There is also a very small percentage of metal bands that do sing about violence, glorify rape, or sex with a dead corpse of a woman. I never heard of a female metal band singing about raping a guy with a dildo. I agree with you that most of metal is not sexist. Also we can name a lot of great mean metal guitarists. I do not hear about great women metal guitarists, except Lite Ford. So it would be great to recognize female musicians as well. We only hear about great female metal singers and not musicians.

+Patrick Wilkerson But that's something I think that comes from the habit of imagining oneself as the character of the stories. That unless you specifically wanna address man rape in a song, you would put yourself or someone in the band, figuratively, and if you're straight, the thought victim will be a woman because when you think of sex (or rape), your first thoughts will be alike to your taste or situation or identity. Just my opinion, though.

I found this incredibly interesting! While I may not see myself as a member of the heavy Metal scene my twin sister does and she's always commented on how Metal fella's, for the most part, celebrate females in the scene; be it fans or artists. Though at time she has said that she, being a female heavy metal fan, has been "quizzed" more by dudes about her knowledge etc. But that just seems to be a couple of douchebags here and there. What I find interesting is the comparison to the goth subculture (WARNING! What comes next is just my OPINION ;) ) I feel in this scene there is far more pressure on dudes to *look* or *be* over-the-top goth etc. Haven't got long/dark hair? Not Goth enough...Don't wear makeup? Not Goth enough...Don't listen to specific bands? Not Goth enough...BUT women's mainstream fashion can include Gothic elements and it be "trendy" whereas if a fella were to don all black/goth ensignia/symbols etc it'd be seen as so totally weird... (AGAIN, THIS IS JUST FROM MY EXPERIENCES, few though they are). You really only need to look at KZbin content too, you search for Goth KZbinrs, deffo a female dominated culture whereas Heavy Metal KZbin channels tend to be run by predominately dudes. Interesting, isn't it? :)

I consider myself both a metalhead and gothically inclined, so maybe I can weigh in with something useful. The quizzing definitely happens. There's a lot of little things here and there that may make the scene less welcoming for girls, but really nothing that seems overarching and intentional. I definitely see a disproportionate amount of female to male youtube goth vloggers, and I think part of that stems from the fact that the gothic subculture puts much more of an emphasis on aesthetics than the metal subculture. In the same way that it's not traditionally feminine to listen to metal, it's not traditionally masculine to wear makeup, accessorize, coordinate outfits etc - which seems to be quite a large part of being in the subculture. Of course, music should be one of the (if not the) most important aspects of the gothic subculture, being as that's where it all started, and the music should be equally accessible to guys and girls. I don't know enough to say for sure, though - haven't met any goths in real life. Still, there's a lot of crossover between the two subcultures, and I hear metalhead boyfriend/goth girlfriend pairings are common.

In fact I think metal is misogynist, fortunately not as much as it used to be back in the 80s. If you notice very well you will see it throughout the history of metal. In my perspective I think this whole thing started with Dio, he introduced new thems in the metal scene, his kind of lyrics were kind of like:"the knight that will save the princess in distress"; but of course he didn't do it on purpose,it didn't have a misogynist intention; he was just singing about history, warriors, queens, kings and dragons... Unfortunately, there were bands that had influence on Dio that got that concept wrong, and turned it into a misogynist theam, and I have a very great example: Manowar. They definitely did it purpose, just look the way they behave, the interviews, the lyrics, the image...Even tho some women like it...Maybe because of their image, maybe they don't pay much attention to the lyrics, maybe they don't wonder like me and they rather be objectified...because they gain popularity in the metal scene because of it...being groupies(yes, they still exist) not by going to every single metal concert and enjoying the metal itself. If you notice very well once more the girls who wear baggy metal shirts, battle vests with awesome patches, hightops, collect metal cds, vinyls and go to concerts just for the music itself are expelled from the metal community, or at least most of it, these are constantly being called "Lesbians"; "Tom boys"; "Mary janes" and they will never be as recognised as the women that wear corsets, leather, studded spiked bras, latex and bearly listen to metal (im not judging anyone tho) and these are always called sexy, hot , metal queens...

+Ana Sofia Cardoso I feel like most people who do the expelling and label people are older men and people who are not metal fans or barely metal fans. I have like a huge group of friends and they are a mix of women and men We are all around the same age too 17-26 and all love metal and definitely care about what everyone has to say.

Agreed. Also, I think that men, being like more energetic and stuff (cuz of biology and stuff), are more full of anger and stuff than women, not intentionally but because of natural causes, and are more into metal and brutal stuff than women. But then its also the personal taste and stuff. So I guess its all a mixture of all aspects and the ratio of all that in the person. Just a thought though, came to my mind so I thought I might share. ( doesn't matter if its not so but just what i thought being a bio student)

I don't think metalheads are sexist, just some individuals who apparently hate woman or think metalheads should be a certain stereotype, I guess. I've a couple guys call me a poser or that I shouldn't listen to metal for whatever reason. At first I took offense to it, but when I realized how wrong they are, I no longer cared. I do listen to metal, but I ALSO listen to other genres of music, in fact almost every genre of music, but metal is my favorite genre of music ever.

I think sexism in metal exist because a few men are insecure about the fact that a women can play an instrument or growl better than they can. As if it was somethings we shouldn't be able to physically accomplish. Imo Angela gossow slays most men in the vocals and her stage presence is something to fear(and I don't see her with her tits out or dressed all funky like the new ae singer). I think as long as your there to be metal and not a metal whore, women should be given the same respect as the men. If your interested in some females in bands that are truly talented check out frantic Amber, bullet belt, black thorn, arkona, matriarch, abnormality ..etc

Well, in my experience on this I hardly ever see guys who try to exclude women from metal, I fact they are very happy that women listen to this and they really enjoy it for them that's great and they are very nice with me an other girls but I know that there are some sexist metalheads that just can't stand women metalheads cause they usually believe that metal is a boys club and women should stay out of it but come on that's bullshit it's a very ancient way of thinking I'm happy cause I don't deal with that kind of people, women can do whatever they want to we are free and that's what is the Metal for right? Feel the freedom to express yourself it's a place where everybody that has a different kind of mind can be part of...the men who try to exclude women inside metal are really stupid it even goes against the real meaning of metal... I love metal cause I could find many things that were missed in my life I could find the feeling of being strong in every aspect of my life and I love the metalheads cause they are different from the rest of the people but the sexist are just like the old men Haha we are in the 21st century! They should stop doing stupid things

Society is sexist. This let men do any kind of "brutal" stuff because... well, "men are aggressive by nature", which is bullshit. So women by themselves will not be in a beginning interest on metal. And by that beginning there's also sexist men in metal... because society tries to make everyone sexist, racist, classist, etc. Society tries to classify us. Metal is not sexist, racist or classist... people and this society are. I enjoy metal music and culture and it's where I feel okay. I don't care about the jerks outside in the streets.

I've certainly never felt unwelcome in the metal community. Even though I don't have any close friends who listen to metal, I'd say most of the people I meet at shows are kind and inclusive. I don't think it's inherently sexist, although there are some sexist people within the genre. They can be found in any genre or culture. I've heard people who don't even listen to metal complain that certain bands' lyrics are sexist, but that's a bunch of bullshit in my opinion. They're usually just gory and they've taken offense to that.

Yeah I wouldn't say sexism is specifically a problem in metal. sexism is very prevalent in all of society today, unfortunately, and some of those sexist people are in the metal community. but the problem isn't metal music; the problem is societal norms surrounding gender.

Metal isn't sexist... But ,the jerks who run the record companies can be...( Phil Spector said that he " owned" the names of the Girl Groups. ( He stole their royalties ,by putting them into promotional costs ,touring costs.etc )..Goldie and the Gingerbreads had to go to England to make it in the Music Business ).... Managers also can be sexist.. Kim Fowley , for example ,the way he treated The Runaways ...& the way that he promoted them... the both of them were very sexist ! Watch the movie The Runaways for a good depiction of how sexist the Music Business can be.On every level ...

no not really i as female do not feel being looked down upon inthe metal scene but it is true that most female fronted metal bands aren't that great they tend more to sound overceompensating and dramatic like the vocalist of straight line stitch BUT we girls like metal bands to have male fronted bands anyways i mean long dark hair tall half naked metal guys who doesn't love that haha

Most often we are more discriminatory toward each other than men are toward us. I am particularly guilty of this. There is nothing that disgusts me more than commenting on a tshirt a chick is wearing "Sick shirt, that's a brutal album," only to get THIS as a response "oh thanks, it's my boyfriends though, I'm sure I've heard them when he was playing them before but I don't know anything about them." (That particular quote was part of a real convo I had with some broad in a Sargeist Funeral Curses shirt at a show in Portland OR.) Because we are already such a minority as is, I feel like this kind of behavior reflects on ME and that is truly irritating. If you're a chick who doesn't like metal but is at a show because you support you're boyfriend and his music taste, that's awesome, I can get behind that. Just don't sport one of his shirts to a show for the sole purpose of trying to "look cool" or to pretend to be part of something you're clearly not. Other women I'm always a bit apprehensive or weary of and feel the need to kind of "gauge" before I truly decide if I like them or not are girls younger than 20. Despite that like me, there are ALWAYS exceptions to the rule, it is an unfortunate fact that many young alternative type women experience a "metal fad" in their teens and early 20's that lasts for a year or two and then goes away. I don't want to be associated with that stereotype so I tend to dislike and avoid those people. I'm also very discriminative about female fronted metal bands and although usually willing to give them a chance, am not typically a fan. Either because A. I don't like clean singing (just a preference), or B. because many of them including ones that use more "brutal" type vocal styles are just shit bands put together for the novelty of having a sexy broad as a front woman and you get that "they sound pretty good for a chick" mentality. I don't abide by that. If they sound good they sound good, I'm not going to lower my standards just because they are female fronted. Don't even get me started on Arch Enemy, but if you want to talk Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult, we can kick it. I am not alone by ANY means in this same sex discrimination when it comes to metal either. Partially because of the need to disassociate ourselves with the stereotypes, and also whether of the female gender or not, being metal fans we expect you to be a more worldly, enlightened human being, and are NOT going to over look someone's stupidity just because they are a female, the way some men might just for the "female metal head" novelty.

100% this. I'm all for women supporting each other, but if you have such a proliferation of girls not really into the music, it sucks for the ones that do actually like it. But then again, I call out bullshit by both sexes equally.

+MusicMakesYouBraver - I absolutely agree, you are going to find fuck wits no matter what gender in ANY genre of music fans. For the sake of this particular KZbin video mostly asking about "female" discrimination in the metal world, and because I myself being a woman take women pretenders in the genre more personally because I feel like it reflects on me, I decided to base my above LOOOONG ass comment about discrimination against the fairer sex as opposed to both genders. Although to be fair, I DID mention something about BOTH sexes at the very end of my previous comment. You just have to read what is basically an entire fucking book to get there, ha!
