I found a metazoo card in the gutter outside of a collectacon event, where there was a man that introduced himself as the game's creator, who happily offered to sign my gutter card, and gave me a free pack to open. The autographed card has this intense feeling of irony, being the only damaged piece in the collection.

So I’m not sure how much you know at this point but as someone who is big into the homemade TCG community (where the designer attempted to advertise) Michael Waddell designed this game to be a really childish game, his main sellers were tourist traps that advertise stuff like “Bigfoot was here” type attractions. The designer did not start with the intention of it being a scam he made it the way it was intended, HOWEVER as he saw money flowing in he began to change his product in BIG ways. The biggest development late into the life cycle of the game was when the developer scrapped the physical game and tried making it into an NFT project. It’s life was because other people were up charging his product, and it’s death was because he began doing the same. The game was always crap and I hope future designers learn from this.

There were tournaments lots of them and a ranking website. Certain “real life” conditions were banned. And they would have live sets that gave you certain real life activations if they were in your deck. It was a lot of fun but died fast.

Okay so like, there’s three things you guys NEED to know: 1) they actually did have official tournaments. They later made these kind of “land cards” that apply the weird conditions various cards need and that’s what’s needed for these higher level games. Most winners never got their prizes. 2) The last set was a Hello Kitty collab that was both overpriced and barely marketed. Only collectors bought it, hoping to flip them…only for around 20% of the total stock to have even been bought out because literally no one who likes Hello Kitty was told this set even existed. The boxes are now at less than half their initial price and still rotting on shelves. In hindsight, it does seem like this was a last ditch effort to make some kind of profit with this game. 3) One of the higher ups at MetaZoo has reportedly embezzled much of the company’s money so there’s some fascinating legal issues going on. Like, of course people knew this game was going to die but it seems like it was hastened by this man’s greed and the creator is pissed about the whole thing. But honestly, when you’re going about the game being a collector’s item and doing NFTs and the like, you’re kind of going to attract the “will embezzle money from an indie game company” types so my sympathy is limited here. Hope he sues and wins. Also hope this godforsaken game never comes back either.

You guys shouldve seen the game in the height of its competitive scene. There was hundreds of thousands of dollars given to top players in 2022/23 before the shutdown. It was 100% an actual game.

I know it technically had players, and I know they had cash prize tournaments, but I don't believe it was ever taken seriously by enough TCG players to have ever succeeded in the long term.

@@TheTestTable1 There was a rulebook with an indexa and errata list that was constantly updated by the games R&D Department with the input of of all of the games player judges. It was a very cool community to be a part of from the competitive end. In 2022 the grand prize player won $250,000. In 2023, they had 4 major $50,000 dollar tournaments. (granted the company has yet to pay out the players of the last tournament such as myself) You guys went into it without understanding the legality of some of the cards. There was also a list that was constantly updated with what cards and effects were legal in tournament play

This is a video I've been waiting to see. All the management drama and game death aside, I always wondered if any locals ever hosted Metazoo? Because apparently, there WAS organized play. I live in a pretty big city in the midwest. Metazoo is in Targets and WAS in three local game shops. Two of them liquidated years ago and one is left with cases upon cases of overstock to this day and NONE of them ever hosted competitive events! Even traveling around the state, I never found any store that hosted game. I feel vindicated knowing that my experience wasn't a unique experience.

the problem with metazoo is it wasn't designed to be played it was designed to be collected and never opened and never played there were to many holy grail cards boxes that had to stay sealed so the speculators and finance bros could horde them meta zoo was to TCG what EA is to video games how to bilk the players out of as much money as possible with as little effort as possible and all that serialized nonsense

I don't know how I've come to meet metazoo, but at first sight, I liked. I really liked the cryptid and urban legends thematic and the art style of classic pokemon was really pleasent for me. It was the very start of It and the guy who made it clearly made out of passion... At least at first. Then the product started being bought not by people who was interest in playing the game, but for people who seen as an investment and wanted resell for bigger prices. This was really kinda sad for me, because I really wanted to know more about it, so I started to look up for gameplay of the game, and the only ones avaiable was a weird gameplay of guys not playing naturally, but in constant effort to sell that game, and it was pretty weird. Then NFT, then kohdok talking about it, and then nevermore. I liked the thematic and wanted to see metazoo going somewhere else but in the end it got involved in too many problems to really work out. Please, Chaotic come back.

My LFG carried it. One of the employees really liked it and pushed it to people. My understanding was if you wanted to actually play competitively you just ignored all the "un-text". I never tried it cause I didn't like how it looked and it sounded like it just ripped off magic but badly. I think half of the popularity was the theme for a lot of folks.

not even a huge metazoo enjoyer here, but I did wanna share on the comment "you can't play a tournament with these." Which, Would appear to be true at first glance, but there was tournament play. If one wanted to competitively they it was simple a matter of ignoring if a card was checking for "outside" effects, and if I recall correctly, any and every effect that can be triggered/caused by outside forces has a means to do so *in-game* as well. Like the effect that said "if you're in an area where mantises are common", if you play I think it's a forest or a "fields" field card or something like that, it'll nowturn on that effect. ALSO to note, you said the creator made the game via Kickstarter and bolted. Just...sort of not true? like, at least, not the way you say it. The first set released just under 3 years ago and they were releasing new with some degree of regularity and an effort was being made. But, like you said, the game was just seemingly purely gimmick that it fell to the tcg 2 year curse and didn't last. There's also some open room for debate if the game is "truly" dead because what's technically happening is the company is being sold and the creator was booted and tried to take the game's value down with them. Which...sort of succeeded considering that's all y'all figured upon brief investigation. Was it a scam? EHHHHHH hard to say, they seem to have been making a genuine effort with new product, but the creator also made nft's at one point and even went out of their way to make a RESERVED LIST. Ya know, the thing WotC tends to say was one of the company's biggest mistakes with MTG. definitely purely a greed thing for that. There's a lot of sketch, the artists were already walking out and hated the creator, it was and is doomed. For all intents and purposes, that game was for sure dead for one reason or another.

It's odd, I've seen a lot of comments back and forth where people say that there were tournaments, then someone says that there weren't, or that they were faked, or that there were tournaments but the winners never got paid out for winning. Truthfully, all it does is just confuse me more about the game, lol. As far as my comments go, I was just giving my quick thoughts and opinions on it for the sake of brevity in the video. I remember seeing it at one of my local game stores just on the shelves. It looked so fake to me that I legitimately thought that MetaZoo was just the name of a third party that just distributes random assortments of other card games or something. In retrospect I don’t know why I thought that, but it is interesting to see that no it’s an actual card game that kinda does what un- sets in Magic and how we used to play Yugioh as kids when we didn’t know the rules but unironically. In a way that’s a funny way to do a card game for like 20 minutes before the joke stops being funny and you want to actually play a serious card game.

I've recently began collecting cards again after many years. I used to collect Pokemon cards ( never played but i just liked the art work ) but stopped after the kalos region. After a while i decided to get back into it and shop at my closet target and get into something completely different. They were digimon and metazoo. I looked up metazoo on KZbin and got basically the same stuff you guys got. It actually really sucks because i really love the art work, it's just so charming. I really wish the gameplay was easier to execute though. I'll still collect the cards if i can because the cards are still nice but I'll also hope metazoo makes a comeback and given a second chance to shine. You at least gotta admit that the 4th wall breaks have never been in a card game before.

I just want to share this story. There's a couple of game stores in my area, and there's 2 I'll go to. I recall them having Metazoo besides the big mega retailers. And I've never seen a single person ever actually play Metazoo. And at one of the local game stores, I remember this teen adult person with his girlfriend and it was one of their moms. And I'm not sure how the 10 second conversation started, but he said how they were going to check out this game Metazoo. Welcome to the rabbit hole! So a lot of the appeal and marketing for the game was primarily around cryptids, so they'd do events at Roswell or the Mothman Festival. Owner if the game tried pushing LGS's to spend $140 retail per booster box and get customers to buy and play. Overprinting and Ebay collabs among ither things sewed bad blood between LGS's and Metazoo and ultimately started the downward spiral.

You are in the era where the TCGs that used to do things the good way are still going, you can still get old style cards and you can find people who play good old formats for them. That seems like the best era because in the original good eras once you missed the hype waves you were out with nothing but regrets. In this era? Well You're definitely the definition of "Art is subjective", I think todays full Digital Artwork is dull and all the Full Art cards are worse.. I can't find anything that is even close to compare to MetaZoo.. Felt like legitimate Fine Art.. *sigh* I miss actual/physical Artwork... I find TCGs like One Piece, DBZ, Magic, PoKe all pretty terrible/Artless these days.. and some people genuinely still like them, values/investing aside.. The MetaZoo card Layout was ridiculously simple to me, idk.. The game didn't feel like it was for 3 year olds like PoKe always did, but it sure wasn't difficult to figure out etc.. OK so I’ve been away from TCG games for at least two years and only now recently when I started to pick back up Yu-Gi-Oh, I started seeing those metazoo cards and even before then I also think around when the pandemic happened. If not maybe half a year later I started seeing some of those cards and it’s like they just popped out of nowhere. I’ve never heard anybody talk about them and I’ve never heard of them ever been brought up and something like a commercial or really in anyway. Metazoo was my first tcg I played collected and played competitively thanks to my local lgs that was one of there partners. Had a lot of fun and met alot of cool people. Sad that the people who ran it were awful. But yeah those starter decks from crypted nation are real bad there are alot of weird and fun decks you can build. Sad to see its gone but. Can't say i was surprised when it did. But hey I got into onepiece and lorcana so worked out in the end.

Maybe I'm missing some context or backstory here but this seems unfairly harsh. They delivered on what they promised, it just wasn't good. The fact that they got a finished product into stores and that people have heard of it is a big accomplishment. Was the Kickstarter an especially high dollar amount or something? In general, people have unrealistic expectations for what amateurs who need to resort to crowdfunding will be able to accomplish. You can't expect someone who opened up shop yesterday to instantly be on par with huge well-resourced well-funded well-staffed corporations who can endure financial deficits on a product for years in hopes of future success and who have decades of experience, trust, and relationships in their industry.

I'd say it's a scam. I know there's a legit game, but it seems so half incredibly half assed. The entire thing was so obviously made for people to invest in sealed product and then resell months or even years for massive profits. Like we what saw with Flesh and Blood. Ignoring the fact Flesh and Bloods popularity and prices are due to people enjoying the game.

Not defending metazoo here bec they're royally fucked up in completely avoidable ways. However, I don't like how much you throw the word "scam" around. (And I appreciate the adventure time references you're sneaking in there). The gameplay wasn't well planned. They even had an R&D team that i met a couple times... but legit I wondered how qualified and how much work they actually did. But its not really a scam. It's a toy. It copy/pasted mechanics of other card games, but u can still play it. Obvi u have to do the work to find cards with consistent repeatable value, but they made alot of products, and the artists did put love into the game. It's just a shame how the people at the top didn't respect the value of their own brand enough.

I still think it's a scam, but I do agree with most of your points. I think that there is a game there that can theoretically be played. But the problem is that the product they delivered was sub-standard. It lacked real sustainability as a competitive game because of the 4th wall effects. And it was a confusing and poorly designed game. It reminds me a lot of Mighty No. 9, which I consider to be a scam as well, if you remember that. Like Mighty No. 9, MetaZoo promised a lot and delivered on very little when the final product was eventually released. I'm not saying that there was no passion from anyone involved. I'm sure a lot of people were highly invested into this game. In fact I really like the artwork. As a traditional artist myself I can appreciate the Ken Sugomori-esqe colored pencil on paper look of the cards. But at the end of the day it turned into another crowd funded project that took the backers money, delivered a sub-par product then ran for the hills.

MZ has plenty of issues from a game design standpoint. I mean, you could just play without the 4th wall effects (such as your opponent yawning). But If you honestly think this this is the worst card game of all time, then there are a lot of tcg you don't know about. Also anybody working in the TCG space must've been living under a rock to not have *heard* of mz over the past 3 years. Anyway cryptids are silly and cool, and the artwork is awesome so it's at least fun to collect if you're into that sort of lore and don't like the gameplay.

oh yeah :-D the game everybody invested because of some youtubers (especially Alpha investments) so prices skyrocketed. The art was praised while i found it ugly as hell. After reading the rules back then i didn't quite understand what's the hype was. I bet most "players" were into because of the money and FOMO and never actually playe the game. You mostly read about faked tournaments were price money was said to be cashed out but nobody received it. It was a joke / scam game just go get rich quickly (which worked for the makers) and some investor youtubers who also made money out of it Edit: you should try to get some cards of Battletech CCG. The rules ware quite complicated at first but i found the gaemplay cool since you basically could attack everything (even the resources / mana since they were buildings). Also :-) new follower and YEAH i want to see a gameplay vid

during video i was like "where have i heard tierzoo before" and typed it in youtube. All videos are about the game dying, one had few more words in title like "50th time". That to me was a clue. So i typed 3 more letters trying to check what "tierzoo nft" brings. Bingo! Dunno how final version came to be but they at least wanted this card game to be nft but the cards have irl counterparts. I think a video i saw years ago the owner of cards tried to scan qr codes but their app was poorly coded and hella slow. So the dude in video worked around it and started using phones own qr reader instead of app and it was 10+ times faster
