as a basist with a Verry nice Ibanez bass that i use live and when band practicing i also use MIDI bass when recording stuff at home. Just because it's ALOT more convenient since i write down everything in guitar pro i can just export the midi track from GP, put it in reaper and load Umansky Bass ontop of it and it sounds amazing with llike 5 minutes of work

As a bassist myself, I am really tented to use programmed bass on productions because of how easy it is to sound right in the mix. The only reason I don't use bass libraries is to not hurt my pride hahaha
@DiamondLifer9 ай бұрын
Also a bassist. I’ve found it easier to just play the parts correctly with the finished intent rather than messing around with programming it. Just me.
@JUNK_ZONE9 ай бұрын
Hey, bass parts written by bassists are still going to have the knowledge of a bassist behind them. It isn't going to waste. Your midi basslines probably sound more legit than most people just fiddling around in midi. It'll stand out either way IMO.

Whatever benefits you think the real bass have, to have them there is a lot of requirements and hustle for them to be "good enough". - Someone with skill to play it - Good enough bass guitar, fresh strings, correct setup (intonation, action, truss rod, tuning), set knobs appropriately. - actually recording it (input gain, consistent performance, takes, edits) All that and more are required EVERY time.

Nick after hearing your thoughts on MIDI bass I’m curious to hear your thoughts on why one would not record with MIDI Guitars following the same logic you outlined as pros/cons. I would think the same reasoning could be applied to guitars, especially after you mentioned having tuning stability issues on this one given the low tuning and thinner gauge strings. With plugins like Hydra you get the things you mention: perfect tuning, access to articulations that might be out of reach, no string changing etc. What are your thoughts there? I’ve been thinking about this lately and am just like “should I just programming everything…”. It’s shocking honestly. Love your work, mad respect!

You should absolutely continue this with piano. Maybe the shirts should be more traditional with gear since you got a drum set and 7 string you're using a lot. The top of the snare with thick riff Thursday in the middle and maybe some lines going side to side to signify strings (7 of course). Or 8 and the 8 and 7th are different colors

Owner of a Warwick Thumb and bass player for 16 years here 👋 This is just my opinion, but I do agree that Midi Bass programs have a lot of value to them. I tend to record everything myself but that's because I've been playing for years and it's my main instrument and it's just what I love to do. Like Nick pointed out, there are lots of benefits for using midi bass especially if bass isn't your main instrument and you want to speed up workflow with consistent results over different projects. I can even see myself using these once and awhile. However, when it comes to live music, each year I'm seeing more and more bands play live without a bassist and just use the midi. Of course, there are economic reasons for having one less member and it's easier to tour with one less guy. But as a bass player, going to see a band I really like and not seeing a bass player live really sucks and takes me out of it. I find this trend is growing, especially in the metal community, where everyone is using the same plugins and now a virtual bass playing guitar parts, it tends to start sounding all the same. Miss the days of unique players like Steve DiGiorgio bringing flavor and texture to a piece. But I guess that's just me being a bassist lol. FYI - Im not really referring to Periphery as their arrangement is they never want to replace Nolly which I respect (and he's still technically in the band). But it still kind of sucks I can't see him (or someone) play anymore. Great demo !
