It is not necessarily amongst the left voters (as at the very least I personally can attest to), but sadly seems to be so amongst the parties. I've talked to many people on this issue and it really a big one. It splits the mind. You wish to be kind, and welcoming to anyone wishing to be and do well. I personally don't think it's a merit/need issue. It's an issue of practicality. If young people with degrees and the support of their families are struggling to house themselves, an illegal migrant from a third world country with no education/skills suitable for an advanced economy is doomed to fail to secure independence.

You've got to feed your own first, and I think everyone understands that. But when you can share, you absolutely should. I think most has been raised with this mentality, so it should apply here as well. But that doesn't answer the base question here: How do we welcome those that mean well, and not those who do not? The number of migrants is only going to keep rising. This is no question, so we all know and understand this is a pressing matter. Simply "building our walls" and keeping all outside is being a bystander to tragedy while we could have at least tried to help some of them. Not doing so risks major civil unrest, economic hardships, etc. We've all heard the horror stories. There isn't a good answer here.

I’m pro _legal_ immigration strictly controlled by the host country and obviously pro accepting *genuine* asylum seekers/refugees. I live in London and I am one of the 36% of Londoners who are ethnically English (according to the 2021 census, although this does not count illegal migration so I suspect the figure is closer to 25%). I feel like a foreigner. I am also gay, and without exception the homophobia I have experienced has been imported with arrivals from Africa and Asia, but that is another story. My neighbours do not speak English, my work colleagues clique into small ethnic groups speaking their own languages. I now barely see anyone else English. No one seems to care. This is rarely analyzed by the media and politicians seem scared to speak out. The left see this as a wonderful thing, but here am I stuck in the middle of this, keeping my head down and my moth shut while I watch my culture rapidly fade away into irrelevance. This is not a right wing attitude, it is cultural survival.

I'm also in London, so I can only sympathise with you. I became homeless in Tower Hamlets and was told by my support worker (mixed race) that I was the wrong sex and colour to get any sort of help. I've worked since I was 16, paid hundreds of thousands of £ in tax and I would only be housed and cared for once all the migrant families had been sorted. I am living and working out of the country I was born in. I had to go through lots and lots of paperwork to be here. I had to learn a new language (and fast, as I could not maintain my job if I could not be productive enough for a bit). I never asked any type of (public) help - money nor time from someone working for the state. I pay taxes and every bill I have to pay since day 1 I'm here. I had a job contract when I got here. I got to the coclusion I should just "have a bath" and wait for the Navy to rescue me. It would be a lot easier.
