Jeb working on it personally makes me think they want to overhaul it massively. Including potions, shields, new enchantments and maybe additions like new items etc. They want to focus on it as post 1.8 combat divided the community and don’t want to repeat it.

@@PeakApexno, but I have seen tons of combat test snapshot videos and It seems fun, simple and slightly more intuitive than 1.8 and 1.9 pvp, however I do recognize this Combat needs more snapshots for It to begin being as popular and better than the other combat systems

Once 1.XX combat comes along, everything is going to change and I feel history will repeat itself. Which I think will be an interesting chapter in the history of Minecraft combat. I'm very interested in the future of this now.

now that you mention it, a simple gamerule for changing the combat type would be amazing. or maybe something that you can only enable when you start a new world. there are literally no drawbacks to something like that, and would likely satisfy everyone in the community!

this is an AMAZING idea. like imagine a plug-in or something to switch what kind of PVP you use on a server like Hypixel. Tons of new building blocks they can use and more functions for gamemodes would be crazy

The problem with a gamerule for something as major as combat is that it will still split the playerbase and can be viewed from some perspectives as bad game design. Even if the playerbase was already split because of it, you might as well have a gamerule for everything like what updates to include or not; doing that would only further split the playerbase.

I remember this q/a post or suggestion post on the minecraft website, one of the faqs was talking about a toggle able combat system, and well, the answer to the faq, was a very firm “no”, i remember it was some thing like “No, we do not plan on adding toggle able combat system anytime soon”, so its likely it won’t happen for a while. Kinda sad though, like you did say, it does not have many draw backs, and could please most of both sides of the community

there is the generic.attack_speed attribute, which you can apply with the /attribute command, kinda like this /attribute @p minecraft:generic.attack_speed base set 1024 It's still not the same, but it's better, i guess

As someone who wasn't fortunate enough to experience Minecraft myself until I became an adult a few years ago, I can only agree with the part about it feeling more intuitive, and IMO there's just a really nice flow to it, better than what on the surface seems like outspamming one another. I think it's also worth noting that the fact that many servers continued being based on 1.8 is also thanks to the fact that it was simply far less demanding than more recent versions of MC, so it catered to those preferring the old combat AND server maintainers.

The combat update was just very controversial when it released with mass hate. There for sure are still those haters, but the group has fallen significantly. Many servers refused to update due to the fear of losing mass amounts of players.

MC's performance didn't really take a big hit until 1.13 came out; the performance effects of that update are still felt today. That's why 2b2t is stuck on 1.12 for the foreseeable future

nowadays there's plenty of plugins and third party mods like fabric's starlight that can actually make a server perform better than it did with 1.8 spigot

that is just rtered take if u think that 1.8 is just about who has higher cps it just tells me that u didnt play it nearly enough because cps isnt even that important yes more cps = less kb but movement and sprint reset is far far far more important then any amount of cps u could get one of best debuff players jewdah kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2WQcoV7r8aEq68 getting railed by nakoso only having like 10cps avg cps does matter but all people that try to defends mojangs combat update didnt even put 1k hours in the game before 1.9 as for other gamemodes as kitpvp factions whatever there is 1.9 and later updates also removed alot of things that were useful for 1.8 as rods became useless bow boosting isnt possible blockhitting was removed even if it wasnt as useful as it was in 1.7

It's very interesting to see how 1.9 is taking over, especially since overall there is a huge majority who use 1.8 style pvp, if we not only take older servers like hypixel into the picture, but also almost all of bedrock edition. There will still be a vast majority of 1.8 pvp players if bedrock doesn't get it's own pvp update, which I think is needed for both editions after so long. I personally play mostly bedrock, but I play java for certain servers as well, and I personally much prefer the 1.8 and bedrock style of pvp, they're a bit different but similar in principle. I personally wouldn't be happy if Mojang just ported over 1.9 pvp to bedrock, I think a brand new style is definitely needed for the future.

Mojang can’t just port 1.9 combat into bedrock, because that would include mcpe, which would make mojang take a huge hit in the number of active players, as a lot of people play on mobile

Bedrock isn't really 1.8, its kind of its own thing. No blocking and knockback is very vertical With the limitations of phones I don't think they can really change combat all that much

I used to play 1.8 pvp a lot, but then, I started not playing minecraft, being busy with my life. When I came back, I became really rusty, and I was losing constantly. I switched to 1.9, and it was a lot easier to learn 1.9 pvp than 1.8.

@Abird Pilguy I still don't understand why everyone says this. Play 1.8 a bit and record yourself or watch a 1.9+ player play 1.8, and you'll immediately see the reason you're not even aiming on the other person 90% of the time.

This made me cry as I have played for many many years, I remember when 1.8 came out and I was so excited! And as much as I love hermitcraft and the new frontiers of 1.20 and more, I still love the 1.8 pvp system and its a childhood memory for me...

I was just thinking about this, there’s been 11 updates since 1.8 and there’s been so much added to the game and like you said I haven’t seen any KZbinrs making any 1.8 pvp content anymore.

I don’t think it’ll ever completely go away. There will always be fans of those combat mechanics. But 1.8 is from 2015. Most of the younger players these days don’t even remember pre 1.9 combat. I didn’t start playing the game myself until 2020 lockdowns (when I was 24), and I honestly don’t feel the need to go back to the old versions unless it’s for mods I like (such as Fossils & Archaeology). It’s like a lot of games. Eventually games or modes that were once popular will start to fade away as newer versions comes out. The original Modern Warfare 2 came out in 2009. But only the really hardcore fans play that while most players will stick with MW 2019+. Or really, any old games like OG Doom, Counter Strike Source, Old School RuneScape, Warcraft Classic, etc. So in the end, you’ll probably end up with a small, but loyal base of players for 1.8 servers.

I really don't care that much about 1.9 or 1.8 anymore as I don't necessarily play Minecraft anymore, but one thing I really would like to see come is the Combat Snapshots like Mojang, it's been 2 years and it looks so interesting.

1.9 is good but please mojang, nerf the axe and improve the sword, I don't want a slow ugly looking axe as a weapon. Make sword crits disable shields too at least 2-3 seconds also make the sword a little tiny bit faster so we could combo.

5:54 - The amount of times I got Comboed in Bedrock PvP (Which is still based on 1.8 but has 1.19+ stuff) so it's very much a struggle but at the same time it helped me get out of a tough PvE situation (Logged on to a YT member sever with 4 hearts due to a Drowned attacking me with his trident while I was on the connecting screen)

Im afraid of cheaters in 1.9. If you can easily recognize cheats in 1.8, its almost impossible in 1.9. I think its the main reason why 1.8 pvp will use for all non anarchy large servers. 1.8 anticheats are more relaible than 1.9

@@Abingusus 1.8 anticheats have been more developed because more competitive server were on 1.8 and therefore there was a bigger need for 1.8 anticheats. It's not the version, it's how much demand there was for an anticheat for the version. If 1.9 competitive servers get more popular and face similar cheater problems, there will be more effort put into 1.9 anticheats and they would catch up. Also, maybe I just play in the right/wrong places, but I've only ever seen like 1 cheater on pvplegacy and many more on hypixel

@@aurniox Yeah I've not seen cheaters on 1.9 either and part of me wants to think the community isn't competitive enough for cheating to spill over from the tryhard servers to the popular ones, if these are even gonna be two separate things But on top of that I'm not sure how it would be harder to spot on 1.9, it's probably gonna be 3.x block reach and 80-90% knockback again which is kinda the same for both systems?

@@eliad6543 seems only Cheats that can be seems was AntiKB,KillAura,Always Crit,Always create Knowckback,Cooldown Reduction and Reach(wich is Very Very Blatant and Very Sus) and not to mention i bet that Auto Attack will be Undetectable since we can just code the cheats to just read the cooldown timer and Hits again once the timer goes off,something that Tweakroo has for Tech Survival Player like Schicraft AFK killing certain mobs that needs Looting 3 sword to obtain

Minecraft just has great desync between the client and the server on what your in-game location is. Ofc it is partly ping dependent like in every multiplayer game ever, but the desync here is greater than other forms of desync, especially when taking any sort of knockback and it matters way more than in a shooter game. 1.8's fast pvp mechanics use this and allow you to get comboed even outside your hit range. Desync still exists in 1.9+ but doesn't come into play nearly as much due to no combos

The fact that 1.8 is still alive is comparable to how Smash Bros Melee is still alive. 1.8 will likely never completely die, but I think it will continue to decline. And as a player who picked up the game when Release 1.4 was around, I'm all here for it. I'd like to see big networks move on.

I love the system but I seriously consider quitting because every popular server and game mode is infested with closet cheaters. Its so obvious they are cheating too and you can only combo/beat them if you trick them. It just isn't fun when you can't have fair PVP fights. I get it you can still do well using game sense or super high CPS and good ping/aim/timing, but being able to engage in even PVP fights even with lower CPS was what made it fun for most. It will die if the cheater problem isn't addressed.

I'm kind of glad... back when 1.9 was new, I felt like one of the only people who wasn't whining about a pvp mechanic which honestly wasn't that bad, and the people who disliked it, as it seemed to me, were mostly just afraid of losing their dominance.

I prefer 1.8 personally because of the higher skill ceiling. My personal problem was all of the people who backed the update were all not very skilled. Like all top people preferred 1.8.

I hope so, I can't believe how many servers are still held back by 1.8. The fact that hypixel modes like build battle are missing almost half the blocks available in modern versions just because people can't move on from 1.8 combat

at this point all of hypixels playerbase is 1.8 oriented meaning a hard switch to 1.9 combat would take a big hit to their playerbase, also hypixels pvp gamemodes are fastpaced and would be more difficult to play on the new version

People have been asking for a gamerule to include 1.8.9 pvp for years now. It's crazy to me that you're blaming us the consumers, when we didn't ask for a combat update. Edit: Also the fact that the 1.8.9 pvp community has been ignored for years now, with any mention or suggestion of 1.8.9 gets silenced on the many forums such as reddit. During the combat update, and the upcoming new one the og pvp community never had any say, so how do you expect people to move on when you're constantly ignoring their existence. If Mojang wants to resolve the issue of people staying behind in 1.8.9, they'll need to communicate with the pvp communities to find a compromise which satisfies all.

Arguably, although the straight combat of 1.8 might be more skillful, alththough 1.19 has so much more variation nowadays, that it could be said it is more skillful because of that. (Tridants, crossbows, elytras, ect). Also, although I do not perfer or like crystal pvp on servers, if you are an experianced player, it is way more skilled than any other area of pvp, and people are still finding more info about crystal and respawn anchors to this day. But yes, if you had a it of unenchanted diamond armor and a sword, (add an axe and sheild for 1.19), then pvp in 1.8 would require more skill.

1.8 was one of my favourite updates, more for what is added than what came after. I'm a builder so PvP changes don't really affect me. At the time I was concerned it would make everyday gameplay more tricky (with the cooldowns) but now I naturally delay my hits often to the extreme perhaps as a result of trying to used to 1.9. I think it's good that they are looking into improving the current system of combat, that will probably be what kills 1.8 combat outside of revisiting old versions for curiosity or nestogia. I say that but the new controversy is chat reporting, which may keep 1.8 combat going over a future combat update due to them both being related to multiplayer. Then again there are mods around these things and chat reporting doesn't tend to work on big servers anyway as I understand. I suppose older servers which run on older versions have the advantage of getting the players who play older versions as they can support players from 1.8 onwards.

There's actually a really good plugin I used to use that did some tricks on the server-side to bring back 1.8 combat to 1.9+. You could even choose which mechanics you wanted to keep or replace with the old ones. I don't know if it still works on the latest version though, and I've heard that 1.9+ clients don't let you click as fast so comboing is harder. There needs to be a built in gamerule like you said to just use the old combat so we don't have janky solutions like this.

The one thing I could bring from 1.8 to later versions of the game was the no-cooldown attacking - and I could do this either by using /effect to give players a really high haste effect or (as of 1.16 and up) use /attribute to increase the base attack speed attribute of players. That said, while I enjoy both 1.8- and 1.9+ versions of PVP, I prefer a slightly more casual than competitive style of PVP.

Personally, I think that there is equal potential for skill in both versions, but I agree that there’s a higher skill average in 1.8 players. Additionally, this is sort of related, but I think that it’s a lot easier to have “chill pvp” in 1.9+ than 1.8, solely because most big 1.8 servers, like Hypixel & Lunar Network, are just infested with sweats. And while I’m not arguing that PVP Legacy doesn’t have its fair share too, I think there are also a lot of people just on to have fun & not necessarily to tryhard.

Personally, I started off on bedrock edition, playing mobile, and only recently got into Java and Java based PvP, and I think I can say the same thing happened to a lot of people, so they ended up learning the bedrock PvP mechanics, and since 1.8 is quite close to bedrock mechanics, it’s a lot easier to slightly change to 1.8 PvP mechanics, as to learning an entire new way to PvP, with 1.19. Also, later on you stated that it was much easier to learn 1.19 mechanics than 1.8, well I would like to beg to differ. It’s very very easy to just click to your hearts desire, and then if you feel like it, you can learn other things like fishing rod and snowballs, but with 1.19, you have to learn to perfectly time all of your clicks, and do so with 2 different weapons. Not only that, but you have to learn how to time your shield blocks with your hits, other wise, your just gonna never have your shield up when necessary and take loads of damage, or always have it up and never deal damage, all of which take a lot of time and effort to learn, most of that just being the basics, while 1.8 takes little to no time to learn the basics.

That's the thing; you can't win against the majority of other 1.8 players by _just_ spam clicking. It is a requirement to learn how to sprint reset, strafe, rod, and etc with skillful precision to consistently win. I feel that these base 1.8 mechanics used in almost every battle are notably harder to learn than many 1.16 PvP mechanics. Even if that statement is wrong, there's completely different PvP playstyles and modes in 1.16 PvP that give you another shot at starting to see some success against other players, compared to having to perform the same complicated mechanics in most 1.8 kits.

Something to note is that backporting and forward-porting mods are often available. ESPECIALLY for versions of the game that are popular with modders, such as 1.12. Using 1.12 as an example, there are mods adding content from future versions of the game up to at least 1.16. There's also mods that return the 1.8 combat mechanics to 1.12. So if some servers wanted 1.8 mechanics so bad, but didn't want to be using a super-dated version of Minecraft, mods like this were almost always an option.

If we ever get a combat update sometime with the new mechanics from the combat snapshots, but a version of these that have even more depth and polish and it's a full scale update instead of some side snapshots, I can easily see it totally killing 1.8 PvP if it's good enough and fun and has a decent skill ceiling while still being easy to understand for newer players and still just as good for PvE as 1.9. There would simply be no reason to not upgrade unless you just for some reason still really really hardcore prefer the original Pvp. I hope an update like this does eventually come, as well as arriving with tons of server and fps optimizations, so most if not all major servers can finally get on modern versions.

One of the most unique things about 1.9+ combat is that it's incredibly accessible for new players, with intuitive mechanics and different hit sounds helping the player, while also having a very high skill ceiling with Crystal PVP and even high-level fights on Axe and Shield PVP. When I first started playing Java edition around 2 years ago, I started with 1.8 but just didn't understand *why* I was losing. With 1.9+, it was clear to see that my movement was bad or I was spam clicking or something like that and I was able to improve rapidly without tutorials and such (though those are still helpful). I know this is still somewhat controversial, but I think 1.9+ combat is better than 1.8 by a fairly large margin.

​​​​@@malachiomeletoe4320Fair point but it was still hellah more fun. Combos were the stuff. Also most newbies were bad because of poor aim/damage uptime making it easy to combo lock them. W tapping, strafing, and other speed/angle manipulation were mostly a tiebreaker between good players

Honestly, making a combat mode toggle in game rules would be interesting. Then servers could pick or even splice the differences in combat depending on how the settings are set up.

I used to frequent Mineplex Survival Games back in 2014, during the 1.6/1.7 PvP era. Back then, strafing was the meta, and fishing rodding was still in relative infancy. I and and a small circle of Mineplex PvPers discovered that hitting at just the right frequency allowed our hits to be registered twice as fast as for other players who hit normally. I remember becoming so good at this meta, that it allowed me to accumulate the back then impressive 11k+ overall kills in SG, which made me one of the best players for a while. It also made us prime suspects for killaura hacks, lmao. I've had so much fun doing this, good old times. I remember how I was getting more frustrated with new players, the fishing rodders and especially the sweaty sprint resetters - I could no longer hit them. That was the end of the true strafers era. I feel great nostalgia, whenever I see some recording of the good old Mineplex SG. All those players who say that 1.8 PvP is just spamclicking have no clue what they're talking about.

At first, when 1.9 was released, I hated the new system. Especially how they removed sword blocking, as it was somewhat of a universal peace sign. Looking back now, I realised how stupid the 1.8 PVP system was. You just spam your mouse until someone dies or their hand starts to hurt and they give up lol

Probably my most unpopular Minecraft opinion: pre 1.9 PVP is the worst PVP experience I have ever had in a video game. You can have your cursor perfectly aligned on the enemy and be clicking as fast as you can, but every single attack you perform just phases through the enemy whilst every single attack they do hits you. What were you doing wrong? You weren't spam clicking the the correct way. What's the difference between spam clicking the correct way and spam clicking the incorrect way? I don't know, just throw yourself into PVP again and hope this time you do spam click the correct way while you have very little feedback. Even playing tactically won't help you. I have had times where I snuck up on someone looking in a chest, opened the fight with a critical hit, and continued hitting them while they were still interacting with the chest. But despite doing a perfect ambush, the enemy still manages to turn around, hit me once, and then I suddenly can no longer land a single attack as they kill me with no problem.

You werent W tapping nor strafing, thats it. They out positioned you and manipulated their speed so they stayed out of your range while keeping you in theirs. You got the basics, you just fell short of mastering what differentiates good players. Proper aim and damage uptime was still enough to steamroll through 75%+ of players back then on gamemodes without a matchmaking system tho. You aren't being completely honnest

It sucks that the new combat is mandatory and makes some enemies (baby zombies) a lot more difficult to deal with for no reason. But I think as time goes on people just start to get used to and start to enjoy the variety and some strategy that the new combat brings. I really do want improvements and I wonder why Jeb hasn’t updated it in a while

My friend told me that I quit pvp because I was bad, but in reality I was getting bored. Even if I was indeed the best terrible player, I don't see any enjoyment. There was just one loop everytime. Play - launch - queue - kill - win/lose - continue playing - quit - bored - repeat PVP has grown on me, since I've started playing 2 years ago and I've officially retired. I just want to play survival which isn't that stressful

yesterday i played 1.7 LOTR in the overworld and it felt very fun like it showed me that the combat updates are something that is greatly needed and is greatly received. the LOTR mod adds combat delay which makes it challenging as well as armour and tool attributes and i was only fighting zombies and skeletons lol. so anyway i think i find the newer updates sometimes overwelming and its nice to step back and relax and look at the simpler times.

Another thing in your poll that favours 1.8 PvP is that the 1.8 PvP community is far more entranched in their position, you won't find many moderate 1.8 PvP fans, on the other hand most of the 1.9+ PvP community are just casual players that don't have a strong passion for 1.9+ PvP so don't necessarily vote for in the poll at all

I really think that Mojang should just add advanced game rules that let servers pick between 1.7/1.8/1.9+ PvP protocols so we can have all servers update to all servers with the new content and removing having to support so many versions while allowing to pick what pvp protocol per gamemode

where did the promised second combat update go? why has mojang seemingly abandoned what would make everyone more happy than having just the choice between the two? im still holding out for it, but my hope is fading. 1.9+ combat is unarguably better for pve but pve has never been what people cared about balancing. with shields and stronger armor prolonging fights, and so much potential to use supplies mid fight , many engagements between similar skilled players are decided entirely by who brought more stuff. 1.8 isnt without its flaws, most notably the unintuitive nature of it, as mentioned in this video, but at least the high skill ceiling gives people something to continuously meaningfully practice towards. the second combat update snapshots showed a glimpse of what could be the best of both worlds, something with both a reasonable skill floor, and a ceiling more than head height above it.

@@LineOfThy a high skill ceiling from what, crystals? inventory management? when you add such a sheer amount of things to do, yes, you can raise the ceiling but at the cost of bringing the floor part of the way with it, thus adapting the largest flaw of the other option, unintuitiveness. and i know the snapshots havent been abandoned by the community, as there are a few servers running them, but mojang has a track record of promising things in the vague future without any of them being ever touched even to this day. my hope hasnt burned out yet, but its only a dimming ember at this point.

I've used both and I've absolutely preferred the "new" combat since its release. With the old combat, you'd simply get destroyed with no chance to fight back unless you focused on PVP to some extent. And even then you'd still get destroyed with no chance to fight back, just less often. 1.9 PVP seems a lot easier to learn not just because it's more intuitive but because click speed isn't such a central part of it to the point where clicking slowly makes you useless.

When I got into bw on 2018 it was almost impossible. I kept being first rushed by "sweats" every game. I still pushed through and now I have 500+ hours of playtime with bw. These days The situation is Even worse. I don't think it is reasonable for new players to lose The first 200 of their games.

I grew up with the 1.8 combat and the nostalgia of it still runs deep in my memory and I will always prefer it to the new updates but as a survival/SMP player there just isn't any servers left that still run the 1.8 combat or they disable pvp entirely, although I have no hate to the cooldown pvp system because it is easy to learn the crystal pvp aspect just ruins it completely for me as the fight ends so quickly

Agreed. Though I have come up with an idea about stance determining attack timing and damage type. Fast, medium, and strong. Being able to toggle between the stances could provide a rather dynamic way to do the present combat, keeping cooldowns and crit importance while allowing for faster attacks that aren't bee stings. It would be pretty easy to streamline to boot. Further proof of how good of an implementation this could be is that it goes in line with the best lightsaber combat from any star wars game, the jedi academy series. I'm not saying new animations, just changes in cooldowns and damage values at perfect timing.

I think why 1.9 was so hated was because you had to relearn the pvp system again, and why 1.8 lasted so long was because people saw the hate it was getting. But when 1.8 skill ceiling became higher and higher new players wanted to win, and they had a completely different version of pvp to play in.

I only started playing Minecraft in 2015 a year before 1.9, so in terms of vanilla Minecraft, 1.9's combat is what I'm most used to, especially since I follow a lot of KZbinrs that play on the latest updates (Hermitcraft, Empires SMP, etc.) and am a regular watcher of MCC. However, I still did play primarily on 1.8-combat servers up until a few years ago when I found PVP Legacy (through one of your videos I think) and decided to give 1.9 PVP a good chance. I'd say 1.9 is superior when it comes to the sheer amount of options you have for combat at your disposal. You've got End Crystals and exploding respawn anchors or beds, as well as tridents, crossbows, firework rockets, elytra, and the list goes on. 1.8 combat may be what a lot of older players are used to, but they miss out on all these options if they choose to play that version (unless a plugin is used to implement 1.8 PVP onto a 1.9+ server, but that's probably quite rare).

4:41 Though I do prefer 1.9+ PvP, I don't think the basic mechanics of it are more intuitive. In 1.8, each time you hit the enemy with your sword, you do a set amount of damage. In 1.9, you have to wait for the attack indicator to fill before you do full damage. Though this makes sense, the game doesn't explain it anywhere, and I see many new players trying to spam click in 1.9+ PvP because in most games don't have the attack cooldown the way Minecraft does (most games I've played either deal a similar amount of damage on each hit no matter the speed, or have a set attack speed that stops you from attacking faster than this set speed). Also, I feel like it's more intuitive to have swords do more damage than axes, because when people think swords they think combat, but when they think axes they might think combat, but many would think of it primarily as a tool for chopping wood (though this point is somewhat negated because Minecraft does tell you the damage values of the weapon). That's just my experience though, and the point about the other points of 1.8 being less intuitive makes sense to me.

@@__En__ Yes, I get that. And I like that. But I don't think Minecraft explains it very well to new players. Most games I've played don't let you attack faster than its attack speed. Like, if you try to click before the attack cooldown recovers, your click does nothing. In Minecraft, you can attack faster, you'll just do less damage. Again, I like the mechanic, I just don't think it's intuitive.

1.8 combat is about reflexes development. The more you play it, the better your reaction and speed becomes. 1.9 is about strategy. You need to create new strategies to defeat your opponent. That's why i enjoy 1.9 pvp more (but that shield delay still sucks, lol)

TheMisterEpic you are forgetting that bedrock is just 1.8 pvp with some 1.9 elements likes shields and end crystals and also has more players than Java to the availability on more platforms

Well I noticed something is wrong with the textures and *bedrock specific features* He might not know they have 1.8 pvp ig Not to mention the unfairness since you can't change your version on bedrock so if they were ever to change to 1.9 then what do you do, there isn't a choice

I love minecraft and everything about it but that 1.8 pvp is something else, i will never forget those skywar games me and my friends had ,the adrenaline rush everything had to be done fast and with precision.

honestly, as someone who preferred 1.9+ combat since 1.9 came into existence, I'm happy to see the decline of 1.8 combat. the one thing I wish 1.9+ combat had that 1.8 combat has is swords being able to block at least to an extent. well, that and sprint knockback. and before anyone says anything about me not having experienced 1.8 pvp, I've been playing the game since beta.

Personally Mr. Epic I have played mcpe (Minecraft pocket edition) since 2012 and I have a pretty good understanding of 1.8, 1.9, and crystal pvp methods. On mobile for me at least crystal pvp is easy and we have a combination of 1.9 and 1.8 combat systems. Like the strongest weapons are a trident with impaling 5 bc if a target is in water you do around 3 hearts of damage to a full prot 4 netherite player and a multi shot crossbow with instant damage 2 arrows bc if you hit all 3 u can almost kill anyone in fact at 1 point it even killed through totems. I think if you made some minor tweaks to our system on bedrock edition you could get a nice hybrid of both that would satisfy players criteria.

No matter what people say, 1.8 combat will always be my favourite. All those hours I spent playing the old cooldown-less, shield-less Xbox Minecraft with my friends on the couch taught me that having fun is better than arguing about some update. We enjoyed our fast-paced intense battles because it was fun, we never cared if it was 'no skill only spam'. I wish I could make a mod that mixes both combat styles, making the sword fast and spammy, and the axe+shield combo being the slower but more powerful option, but I can't code for shit.

Ngl whenever people say 1.8 is all spam that just means they don't know how to play it. Which is why people say 1.9 pvp is easier than 1.8. But infact 1.8 is way harder.

there currently is a command that allows 1.8 style PvP on newer versions, the /attribute command. with this command you can change a players base attack speed to a really high number essentially enabling 1.8 style PvP.

this works in theory, but in practice it's really nothing alike. you need plugins to simulate the knockback behavior

I mainly just agree with what @asimoa tweeted and think that 1.8s general playerbase is too good for it's own health I did try out 1.9 and became decent at it pretty fast which further implies that it is more intuitive, but personally I cannot get myself too like it all that much. and then you have the combat test snapshots which I mainly play now and they are amazing! there is so much potential and it already does feel miles better then 1.8 and 1.9

From development standpoint in never version the spigot API is sooo much better for example you don't need to do NMS particles in 1.8 now you have simple API for it, more events to use for detecting things etc..

This is a good and bad thing I think. It’s cool that 1.9 pvp is getting bigger and growing because it overall grows the Minecraft pvp community since most people play in the newest version. However it’s sad to see the 1.8 pvp styles die. Learn this 1.8 style now and enjoy it while you can before this art is lost. Or at least not practiced.

I have been active in both PVP communities over the past 8 years, and although 1.9+ is pretty fun, 1.8 is still my preference. Mojang has repeatedly proven that they will not listen to the community on anything multiplayer related, so somebody needs to make a mod for 1.19 (or some version after) that uses 1.8 PVP mechanics, knockback, and movement on the latest version. Im suprised nobody has tried this, even if it would be very hard.

Another thing to note is hypixel, the most popular 1.8 pvp server, has level scaling which pairs lower level players with other low level players. There are still several 1.8 pvp youtubers out there which means that players still can learn from them regarding mechanics in 1.8 pvp

The reason why it falling off from the cliff it could be that people adapt the 1.9 pvp and gotten rusty when is fast clicking pvp

I've never liked PvP, so the 1.9+ combat has always felt better to me. Far more balanced. When farming large numbers of mobs, I'd much prefer to use a sweeping edge sword and kill the whole clump in a couple clicks, rather then clinking time and time again. And all the little rules become second nature naturally- you don't have to learn anything outside of the game to be at least decent. Not to mention that as someone with anxiety that combat can set on high... yeah, being able to actually get at least one hit in edgewise is nice, even if I'll never be great in PvP lol

As someone who has been playing since 1.7 I think new mini game servers will be a well needed refresh as hypixel is an unrivaled giant currently and there needs to be more diversity that will be a seldom sight to see when tubnet and the mcc server release.

I can't even play pre 1.16.5 anymore, let alone 1.8. So many QOL features just vanish. I would love to play the Tekkit modpack from like 1.4, but it is just so painful to play now imo.
