On the strength of this video I tried Mint Debien, primarily as I was looking for something "shinier" than the "lite" distro I was using, on this older under powered laptop I recently acquired. It was a smooth install, the overall performance seems even better, and the boot time has much improved. Definitly a keeper.

I would not mind swapping to the Deb edition. So far I am happy with Mint 20.3 and can't wait to try version 21. Mint is my daily driver. At the end of the day, I just want my computer to work so I can do my reports, schedules, send emails and play a little Tux Cart here and there. You know, things that people normally do with their computers. It is comforting to know that if something happens to Ubuntu, life will continue to be good swapping to the Deb edition.

Stable Distro's are the way to go, Debian Edition has even less updates then the Ubunto based Mint. I used to use ARCH on another PC and in like 2 weeks you could have up to 100 Updates in the tray, every day updates galore, Total Update Insanity LOL Yeh I will stick with Linux Mint any Day.

I have made a habit of keeping hardware for quite a long time. Stopping only to update HD to SSD and max out RAM. I am a long time user of Debian itself and while I have tried 30 or so distros I tend to like Debian based versions best. I settled on LMDE 5 for all my computers to have an identical toolset and cloud storage access when moving between machines (desktops, laptops, chromebooks). Debian (and its derivatives) have had a long held the reputation for slow package updates but it is also rock solid generally. I personally haven't found that I need a feature in a newer version of almost any software I use so badly that it would put me off LMDE (or Debian itself for that matter). If it were so there is nothing stopping me from doing the work to install the upgraded version if needed. While I have power user skills I definitely do not use them often in Linux. I just want some basic things that Windows and Mac don't give me. An affordable secure computing experience with little interruption from the OS and (little to) no crashes when it does have to do its thing. That's what makes me a Linux user. I have everything from a 2007 20 inch iMac, Original HP 14 Chromebook, to a 2022 AMD Rizen based mini PC using LMDE perfectly. My vote is underrated.

one issue I think with LMDE ... is that Linux Mint seems so stable and one of the best options for new linux users. That is a good issue to have when one of the main issues is "the other thing you do is more popular and done so good" Though if they WANT to go to LMDE as the main "Mint" at some point ... keeping LMDE updated of the years, make sense

I switched from Mint to LMDE for my work desktop about a month ago and I'm honestly loving it. Interestingly though, I notice it's very sensitive to overclocking - I run dualboot with Windows for gaming reasons and the overclock that had worked perfectly fine for tens of thousands of hours on both Windows and Mint 21 causes the whole machine to lock up completely within 15 minutes on LMDE. When I scaled it back a bit the problem went away.

I did an install of 21.0 Cinnamon edition to a USB flash drive (not live) for use on multiple PCs. The PC I installed with has AMD integrated graphics. I later plugged the flash drive into my work PC that has Nvidia discrete graphics. I got a popup on my desktop asking me to choose drivers for my graphics card. It listed my exact model card and gave me a choice of a few different drivers. I went ahead with the proprietary Nvidia drivers. I later received an update notice to updating from 21.0 to 21.1 with one of the choices being to skip the update. I assume if I selected "skip this version" it wouldn't ask again, however I wanted to have the update. The update was seamless without losing any of my appearance settings. Mint Cinnamon can be tweaked to have an absolutely beautiful desktop appearance. I recommend the "Transparency Extension" to everyone wanting a great looking desktop. I'm very pleased with Mint Cinnamon thus far. It's beautiful, responsive and very stable. I have to use Windows at work for a few pieces of software that absolutely won't work with any x86 emulator like Wine or Play on Linux. If it were not for the software that requires a Windows OS, I'd use nothing but Linux with Mint Cinnamon being my top choice.

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS has been using 5.15 kernel a ~couple of weeks now as 20.04.5 is rolling out; the date in the schedule rates to the ISO release detail but installed systems get it many weeks for that (current focus is 22.04.1, after that focus shifts to 20.04.5 daily). I haven't had a bad experience, however, I've also been trying Manjaro and I feel more inclined to use it. Currently, Manjaro is on my main computer and I have LMDE5 installed on a ten year old Mac. I also have a second SSD where I have Windows 10 and Linux Mint dual boot set up, but that's been giving minor issues at start up. LMDE 5 on the Mac is a little slow, but I attribute that to the hardware. I'm considering trying to switch it to XFCE to see if there is a noticeable improvement in performance. I'd like to try installing different OSes on the Mac, but that doesn't seem to be an option since I blew MacOS away. I guess eventually I get it figured out.

What I have found out is that LMDE is besides Debian possibly the last "user friendly" distro, which provides 32 bit edition. And I have found out LMDE to be nearly as user friendly as standard Linux Mint. Btw. if you have pretty old computer and pretty BFU user, you don't mind a bit older packages. So, I would say that LMDE might be good option for old computers or conservative users, which on the other hand don't want to fight with limited user friendlyness of Debian. Btw. regarding Flatpacks - no, this is Windows style of software installation. Bloated, slow, limited etc. As a backup option it might be fine, but as primary option... not at all.

@InfinitelyGalactic Great video, but a question. Is Linux Mint LMDE still getting supported by the Linux Mint Dev' team like is it still getting updates? The reason why I ask, is after Ubuntu stopped supporting 32bit systems (which is wrong on many levels) Linux Mint's main release followed the same as it is based off of Ubuntu. So, I really hope you or someone out there can verify that the Linux Mint Dev' team is still supporting their LMDE debian based version because there IS a 32bit offering on their page for that. I just got three Dell laptops, with a 32bit Pentium M cpu they work fine on Debian 11, I was hoping that I could put Linux Mint on one of them for certain reasons.

Debian should be what LMDE is . Ready to use out of the box , no need to set it up . With same type of update manager for all available DEs on debian which should be like mint's update manager .

I used the upgrade tool from Mint 19.2 to 19.3 and it buggered everything up, couldn't see anything on the screen. Lucky, I backed up my Data. Many years ago, it also happened using the terminal method, now I just do clean install using a USB Drive. ... I would like to try LMDE but people have complained about missing Wifi Driver, does anyone know if this is a problem in LMDE 5?

I knew Ubuntu was a good product when I watched a video from MIT about their robot dog. And yes, their puters we running - drum roll - Ubuntu.. SO there you have it.. me, KDE all the way.. but I do use Debian in my VM. Mint is stable but I find it - annoying.. although quite stable.. I still have the Linux KDE version!!.. ha.. luv that.. side note: Maybe do a review of Kodachi...??... I started it in my VM but have not examined it much as it has lots of things to check out..

I found that LMDE5 was too heavy for my sixteen year old Celeron laptop with 2GB RAM. I then tried MX 32-bit, finally Q4OS. Only the latter runs smooth if the Trinity DE is employed. KDE Plasma bottlenecks the 128MB VRAM in no time.

i have been using LMDE 5 since march and i gotta say i really like it it's Debian style stable and the cinnamon DE for me anyway it runs beautifully i'm not a fan boy or anything in fact i was an asshole Arch user for five years till i was messing with config files and an update humbled me so i decided to go to Debian i ran Debian 4 years on a newer PC at the time so when i got my new one i decided to go to LMDE 5 and it was a great decision( i believe). so far it's great. it runs my VM's so well i couldn't believe it. i pray everyday that the mint team puts a more concerted effort into LMDE...oh crap maybe i am turning into a LMDE fan boy. lol

The whole point of using debian is that it's rock solid stable. They don't promote it as such, but it is every much an enterprise Linux as RedHat was. They are very conservative on the release of packages into the "stable" repositories. If you're going to alter the repositories for allow for non-stable "testing" packages, you may as well just install the ubuntu version. Debian is about stability. Ubuntu is about the latest and greatest, and all the possible crashes you could ever want..

I think it's a good version but lacks so much stuff from Ubuntu and it's very outdated since it's based on the stable branch of Debian and Ubuntu itself is based of the testing branch. If it were based on the testing branch I assume it would be equivalent and better suited for desktop than is Debian stable. I consider the stable branch better for servers even though there are some odd people who still uses it in the desktop, I bet they aren't picky gamers though.

@@desktopmonologues Exactly, as a Debian stable user myself I don't find any issues with either. Just get the latest .deb package from the official website of the software and now you are using the latest features of the software with the most stable operating system.

I attempted to install Debian for 2 hours and it just would not work and so I decided I'll try it again next year, nice to know I can at least use Linux Mint DE if I want to but honestly I have better things to do with my time that read through Debian's terrible manual. Even their website is so incredibly vague and off putting I don't see any real reason to use it.

It's a very nice packaging of debian, but personally I don't find there's much of a reason to choose it over just going regular mint lts to lts. If I were to use a debian distro, mx seems to provide some more up to date packaging and kernels, sort of like Ubuntu but not taken as far, so I find it the most compelling.

A year or two there was a new linux mint version that you could not upgrade to. You had to install from scratch. This was unacceptable for such a mainstream OS that praise the ease of use. I don't know if this has changed, but i flied to other distributions since this time.

LMDE looks fine, but I still think that MX Linux with the "advanced hardware support" version does a better job in keeping things up to date and working (kernel 5.16, drivers, codecs) and providing simple opportunity to get new(er) versions of apps, both normal packages and flatpaks. But of course, you do not get the Cinnamon desktop (very easy).

My DE does everything I want/need it to and more on Xorg. Not saying there's not room for something new, but people whining about not supporting Wayland...what does it actually give you on an average users machine that Xorg doesn't? When I check in on Wayland every ...6-9 months or so.... I keep finding out about one more feature that it doesn't support and won't support. WTF? It's yet another new linux system that does less. There's a reason some distros aren't in a hurry to throw all their dependencies on something like Wayland. Some people just want new and shiny whether it works or not, which is dumb. When Mint devs decide it's ready for THEM to use, that's when they will use it and that's when I will use it.
