Zorin in my opinion is best for Windows users who do not want to get further into Linux and want stuff to just work. They want things to look nice and aren't interested in the legwork to get it to look nice themselves. They are looking to change their laptop or their computer they do not use much (maybe they mainly use their phones), what they do is basic stuff like YT watching, word processing, googling, email, banking, whatever. Point is they are not power users and they are not looking to become one. Zorin in my opinion is ideal for that user. My only addition or help I would provide after putting Zorin on their computer would be to install Chrome for them. I know, verboten to say this in the Linux community, but most normal users want Chrome, and do not care about the Manifest drama with the extensions. Firefox and some of it's quirks might confuse them, and if it does they will blame Linux. We don't want that, and also I do not blame them for this. To the people who say Chrome runs worse on Linux than Firefox so it would be a detriment that way, I disagree personally. Maybe this was true years ago, but it's not anymore. For the user who wants to get into Linux my recommendation is different, and while my take on Mint always anger people, I don't really see the point of it these days. Either Ubuntu or Pop_OS is my recommendation for the user who is interested in LINUX, not just to change from Windows. Ubuntu because it does everything Mint does now with the codecs and is upstream, Pop_OS because it's easier to get the NVIDIA stuff for the user that needs that. Now here people will say why not Mint for them, it's more similar to Windows. Full disclosure: I started with Linux Mint myself, but my personal opinion is now that if people want to get into Linux then they should try something different than Windows. The GNOME userland is perfect to start with, you will encounter it in a lot of distrohopping, and Ubuntu is actually a pretty good choice here because it's GNOME but slightly modified. It's easy to install, has a huge community, and is just as fine as Mint is. The snap drama is mostly overblown these days, and the app store on Ubuntu is not bad. But I also recognize that it's more helpful to meet new Linux fans where they are at and most of them want the Windows like experience at first. But even here before reccing Mint I would say Kubuntu. That could literally be one hop and stop for a ton of users, I see so many daily driving Kubuntu and having no interest in hopping. This is the ideal outcome, as the vast majority on Mint usually will hop before long. Maybe that is inevitable for a new user due to FOMO over feeling like other distros may be better, but if we can reduce that hopping I think that is ideal IMO. But maybe they are not interested in Kubuntu for whatever reason (KDE don't gel well with their hardware perhaps), and are not interested in the Ubuntu Cinnamon spin either which to be frank they shouldn't be because Linux Mint is basically the better "Cinnamon spin" for Ubuntu. That's when I say they should try Linux Mint. Of course all are great options for either person here, neither is a rule, but this is what I personally think as a newish user. I am on arch btw.

I have been a Windows user since W 3.11 (and before that ms dos), but w11 and all the stuff with Recall is a bridge to far for me. Also that it keeps getting locked down more and more, and the reason why i dont like macos is its locked down nature, so why Microsoft wants to emulate it is beyond me, so i tried Linux Mint, and so far i like it. Sure there is an learning curve and it is not the first time i have tried Linux distros, and i am a developer as a trade. There is a way to go before this becomes as user friendly as it should be for general use in my opinion. Examples. I like to game, as many people do, but i spend a few days to get gaming to work well. * First found about getting writ of screen tearing with my nvidia by "force full composition pipeline". (To get the nvidia to save this was harder than it should be, i had to create the scaffolding of the new file that it should use to save the options) * Then i found about gamemode which i took my awile to get to work properly (found out it did not add my user to the gamemode group its creates automatically). * Then i found out about the Nvidia command argumnents that took my games up what i wanted (from 70 fps to 170 in "the finals") (cant remember them on the top of my head) There is also alot more stuff i forgotten, but my point is. Sure do you only use it to surf the internet and write a document its fine, but do you want to do something a little more complicated like play a game, you do have computer skills in order to use it. I get that they might not want to enable all of this stuff as standard, but a simple addition to the install wizard "do you play games", and they do the heavy lifting with this stuff, does not seem that complex to make. I will keep using with Linux mint for the time being, and i do like alot of stuff about it. Like its speedy lightweight configurable nature (Even though Mint is the more bloated of its kind it a skinny ballerina compared to windows).

Great video and explanations. Iv been on and off on linux sinse Ubuntu 7.04, then tried Mint in all variations but i am really liking Zorin 17 right now. I have found though that Wayland is not that stable so changed back to X11 but very impressed with Zorin. It looks the best too in my opinion and i can do everthing i need while getting very good performance. Its a 9 put of 10 from me.

Yes, you can try a linux desktop system as alternative for Mac OS. But only to a certain point. Webbrowsing email, office application, ... but when you want to do graphic software, sound design, video-editing, etc... then the open source isn't the quality you have from commercial software. That's my experience. For a good computer experience, everything has to work well, not only the OS itself.

I find that when people ask "how do I do this" people always start with "launch the Terminal" which I found is not the first thing to always do. For example: you can run DISKS and change mount parameters graphically without using Terminal, without editing etc/fstab and much easier for EVERYONE coming from Windows. I also find that the "Network Manager" is bullshit. Oh did the network go down? To find out run this and run this and run all these stupid Terminal utilities instead of using Network Manager. NM should show much more beyond just that you have a wire stuck in a hole in the back of your computer.

I tried Linux Mint, and while there is a lot I like about it I'm not gonna lie, Unfortunateley it doesn't run all my windows games, it's a mixed bag of does not run at all, runs but has glitches, or runs flawlessly. the same goes for windows software and it's frustrating that I can't find any good Linux equivalents. I ended up installing virtual machines to run the windows stuff and even those didn't work, I tried installing Windows XP in a VM and it was all messed up, all the colours were wrong, I couldn't get 3D acceleration, and if the point of Linux is to get away from Windows, well having to resort to Windows in a VM just defeats the point so I might just as well stay on Windows.

AI is terribly overblown in its current state. It seems to be a basic database with prettier (easier to read) answers. Judging by the wrong answers it frequently gives my students (helpful hint to me that they're cheating or being lazy), I'm not impressed and don't feel a need for it anytime soon. I like the idea of really up to date software but when I see big new features are things like selecting theme colors in Gnome... I just don't care. Let's work harder on fixing bugs, improving support for touchscreens (a significant number of newer laptops have touchscreens or are full blown 2 in 1 devices), and better application support. It doesn't matter how stable my system is if I can't use the software I need.

I had a lot of graphics glitches, games not starting right, messing with different versions of proton ... Eventually, just recently, my win10 got broken by windows update (oh irony, hat MS forced me on to linux) - so I went with the advice of my nephew, who suggested I replace my NVidia graphics card with an AMD one. I was a bit doubtful, but went and bought a RX6600 and plugged it in, anyway. The only thing I had to do after that was to remove the 'force the game to run in compatibility mode using proton xxx'. Every game I tried since, has run flawlessly without any further tweaks. Just vanilla. I am very pleased, and don't expect I'll even try to resurrect my win10 machine. Starting a game takes a wee while longer, but once they're up, they run.

@peterh348
@peterh348 8 күн бұрын
@@prezlamen7906 there are dozens of videos about how to best set up and tweak Linux Mint. Basically this is what you need to do: 1- download the Mint .iso file from the official website. 2 - make a bootable flash drive, for instance using Balena Etcher; 3- boot off that flash drive. 4 play around with it, look at videos, see if you can get comfortable with it before you 5- take the final step and click on the icon that says 'Install Linux Mint' on your mint 'live' desktop, once you feel comfortable with it... Me, I bought a cheap 2nd hand laptop and used that to experiment before I installed Mint on my 'main' computer. Also, bought a paperback "Linux commands by example" to refresh my knowledge of the linux shell - I used to know them but had not actively run linux for a decade or more.

Not as much as it used to. You are still getting the security updates on distros based on LTS distros like Ubuntu, which are the most important. Also with Flatpaks, etc. often you can get the latest no matter the underlying distro version.

Here's my perspective as a Windows user - yep, same for me. But I do think it's just that software got way worse. Maybe tech has hit some sort of peak. The same story goes for phones, how every phone from the past 10 years is almost the same with minimal design changes and only spec bumps. On the OS side of things, I remember the jump from Win95/98 to XP, it was like going to Mars. And then when Vista (and later 7) came out, I think I jizzed my pants, like it was unreal. And now, with 10 and 11, it somehow looks and performs worse?! I used to be very excited for every new release, I was in the insider program and all that stuff. But then after I realized which times have come, I've become very jaded. Now I'm even going to do the unthinkable and go BACK to an older version because the new one for some stupid reason broke the explorer. I still update programs, at least they are still worth it.
