Everybody gets this wrong. Emo isn't about "sad lyrics", or "emotional punk and hardcore music" or some shit like that. The only criteria for a band to be emo is if a member is an sex offender and the fans still support them. Brand New and Jank are emo. Mom Jeans is not. Simple as that.

Well Professor Jeans, I think a lot more goes in to genre than just the music. It should include playing styles, crowd/fan behaviour, how the band act on stage, artwork, lyrics and probably much more. Yeah MCR’s lyrics are super emo, but the playing style is fast and has a more general rock/metal feel, as well as their on stage behaviour and their goth/metal look, whereas Mom Jeans are a lot more similar in every aspect to our emo lords American Football. I mean who really knows, seeing Mom Jeans tomorrow so will confirm their emo status post gig
