I live in fear of this podcast being cancelled so I feel that I have to say - it may be a pretty niche topic, but for those of us in that niche this whole thing is an absolute dream. It’s hard to come across something in this tight of a format devoted solely to this topic and the fact that you’re bringing guests on who are as big name as anyone can be on theme park youtube is something so special in my opinion as someone who has wished and yearned and longed for people to have these insanely specialized discussions with. This is my fav thing on youtube right now!! Word will spread in our small but mighty circle!! Defunctland wasn’t built in a day!!!!

Ryan here, just want to thank you for saying this. We made this show because we wanted to watch a show like this and because we truly love theme parks. This comment will power Byron and I for months. We appreciate the support that you or anybody that watches this silly little show is willing to give us! This comment legitimately made my day.

I would like to second in saying that I absolutely adore this podcast. I was missing Disneyland a couple of weeks ago and really wanted to go back to any theme parks but didn’t really have the funds for it (i think it was around the time the second episode Jurassic World was released). Listening to this every week, allows me to enjoy the parks and rides without having to be there. Listening to the history and opinions of others who enjoy this topic is such a joy. Please keep up your amazing work and continue to have fun doing so!

My favorite memory of this ride was waiting in line with a pair of nuns a few people in front of me. While loading the cast member asked the sisters if they’ve ever ridden before. They said it’s their first time and the cast member with the biggest grin ever says “I hope you enjoy it!”. We saw them as they came back. Their faces were in absolute shock before they both broken down laughing so hard they started to cry.

Back when Disneyland was reopening from Covid and it was only cast members in the park doing test and adjust, I got to ride this ride by myself with literally no one else on the whole ride and it might be one of the scariest things I’ve ever experienced.

Honestly I'm not a Disney fan, and I've only even been to a Disney park once but somehow this podcast is still entertaining to listen to at work. Something about the pure enthusiasm Ryan and Bryon have for theme park rides is so charming, and the history behind them is genuinely interesting.

FUN FACT they actually can’t update the ride with digital enhancements because they tried to before but they couldn’t because the foundation of the ride is too old and they would have to completely knock down the ride to update it, so they just left it alone. So it probably will be exactly the same 100 years from now!!

Ryan spoke directly to me when he asked why someone would even be here if they’ve never been on this ride. I didn’t grow up going to many amusement parks, and I have never been to Disneyland (went to WDW for the first time ever in May, though!), but somehow, the Saddest Pod was such a perfect “friends talking about nonsense” tone that it became such a comfort listen during and even after the pandemic. Somehow that snowballed into watching Defunctland and other theme park content. I was hoping they would start Saddest Pod back up again, but this might be even better since it can cover different parks (some that I may have even been to lol). I hope you bring Amanda as a guest sometime!

Another fun fact about the extinct Magic Kingdom Mr. Toad, when you are exiting the Haunted Mansion, if you look at the pet cemetery you will see a statue of Mr. Toad I think the statue was from the actual ride and was put there after it closed, but I am not 100% sure.

I rode this as a child and was absolutely terrified because that hell room was so hot and as a child I absolutely believed it. I love it so much now. I make sure to drag my friends to it since it's short wait, unexpectedly scary with its claustrophobically close cutouts, and just a fun time. I'm so excited this ride is covered in this podcast because while my friends enjoy it, I'm the only one that is weirdly stoked about this ride. Glad I'm with fellow Mr. Toad enthusiasts!

If there's a way for me to increase my Watcher Patreon contribution specifically to keep this podcast going, PLEASE let me know. Eating out of my Mr. Toad popcorn bucket while I watch this one. I'm absolutely GIDDY that somebody is doing such a unique and fascinating podcast like this - Ryan and Byron, you're absolutely killing it. Every episode has been so so delightful and I can't shut up about how much fun I have watching. That being said, as someone with a tattoo of Mr. Toad, a Mr. Toad enamel pin collection, and a reputation for going on this ride as many times as my friends will let me, this episode has been a real highlight for me so far. I'd watch y'all do this for every single theme park attraction.

not sure if anyone has mentioned - but the regal portrait of Mr. Toad is based off of Thomas Gainsborough's painting "The Blue Boy", which has significant queer history attached to it !!!! i went to Disneyland this past January and can't tell you the excitement that ran through my body when I saw that on the wall !!!! i was also SUPER excited to ride in general, always having loved Disney lore I knew this ride was going to be one of my favourites. thanks for this episode, i love being able to see other nerds nerd out lol

A Mr. Toad movie where they build up the whole thing, ratchet up the tension, an enormous, dramatic scene where he is sent to hell itself, condemned forever, and he gives no fucks and just drives right through not only the walls of Hell but the literal stakes of the plot and busts out into his house, turns the key in the ignition and hops out for some toast before it just cuts to credits, no post scene, would own bones, and you may quote me on that

I wanna hop in and mention that I listen to this pod because I've never been to any of the parks, never ridden any of the rides, and I probably won't. I'm impatient (I'm from the Midwest, I don't do well in lines), I'm terrified of spending money (millennial), and I get anxious in crowds. I usually find a video of the ride you're going to talk about, watch it, and then hop over here to listen to what a couple of enthusiasts think about the ride. It's a pleasant window into this whole amusement park world I know nothing about, and I look forward to each one!

It’s makes sense the “going to hell” because if you ever went to a carnival back in the day there was always an attraction to “go to hell” mini coaster as often as you’d see a fun house walk through.

I’ve always loved Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. My favorite little detail has always been feeling your car bump over the railroad tracks as you approached the train. It was a little detail that Disney used to be known for. Also, I can’t remember specifically how long the wait was, but as a kid I remember queuing for Mr Toad in a line that switchbacked in that courtyard to the left of the entrance. It may not have been a full hour, but it sure felt like it.

I absolutely loved this ride. Little 8 year old me and my brother rode the Disney World version. My dad was teasing us for our poor driving as we spun the steerig wheel. When the train ran over us we were desperately clutching the wheel and screaming while my dad laughed maniacally. And the hell scene? We were a little scared for sure. The shock of suddenly being thrown back into reality at the end of the ride still sticks with me. We were very quiet and confused. I was devastated when I learned the ride was gone. I hope I can visit the Disneyland ride one day.

I wish I’d listened to this podcast before I went to HK Disney because I was JUST there for the first time; but I love that I tuned in to use this info for future visits! I love seeing people geek out about things and share information about it, and Watcher overall is so good at doing just that. Format is perfect for the subject matter, and I particularly love the small bits of ride footage and other clips you include. I will continue to listen until you review every ride in every theme park in the world ❤

I'm not even a theme park enthusiast or anything but I sure do love watching a couple of dudes talking about how much they love these rides. Keep it up!

This is my favorite podcast. The guest speakers and the formula are perfect. I look forward to seeing this exhaust all the rides in Disney and venture off to Sea World, Knott's, Dollywood, Vegas, and the many roadside attractions across America!
