Is MTG Foundations in Trouble without Commander?

I feel standard isn’t as popular anymore because commander lets us run unique decks without needing multiple copies of cards. It’s gives people varied and fun gameplay each and every time (aside from cedh and their turn 2 win nonsense lol). Casual commander is just that, fun and casual and filled to the brim with unique gameplay each time. aka, my junk cards have a home.

I'm jumping back into magic specifically because of foundations and dragging in a bunch of people with. Throwing a party where we're playing jumpstart and out of the 20 of us doing this, only 2 of us have ever played before. Was the perfect low level entry point for us to get new people in and hopefully keep going. Everyone thats doing this event is pumped about it.

@9:15 Standard was the biggest thing. Commander is popular but I like it but I love standard because playing commander can take 20 minutes each turn, with my opponents tapping and untapping it makes it so long. I can go to the bathroom it still isn't my turn.

The issue with standard is that the balance is being done for modern and commander. In the golden age standard was what the game was built for, sometimes a rare card would see play in modern, usually once per set, and once a year or so a card would be good enough for longterm high power format play, and we liked it that way because eternal formats felt eternal.

Foundations is Commander because Foundations contains MTG cards. Everything in this set can be used in Commander, so Foundations is not 'without commander'.

I play standard in arena because it cost me 0$ and I can make any deck because I have enought wildcards. Standard cost way too much in paper, it's really fun but the cards price kill it. I play commander paper version, cheaper, no rotation 1 on a kind x99 and I buy single.

Even better if these decks had zero new cards and were 100% reprints of popular commander cards. E.g. a couple of well tuned tribal decks for each color (goblins, angels, zombies etc.) and put some popular staples in there that can go a into a variety of decks.

I will always love MTG but have stopped buying sealed product since they just mostly reprint the same old cards I already own. But when I opened the Complete bundle set, I was blown away with the oil slick lands. I was instantly hooked and had to buy more. I hope they come out with another gift bundle like the Complete bundle.

some anecdotal news for your brain database - I got into magic in August '24. My friend used to play in the early 2000s and Bloomburrow got him interested again. He asked me to learn to play and I did, and now Im in. already have 1000 cards in my collection, Im subbed to your channel and the only format I play is standard. I guess I might look into pioneer once my DMU cards are no longer usable in standard, but thats about the only thing I don't like about it as a new player. that and the crazy amount of legalities within the formats. I bought a bunch of commander cards before I knew I couldn't use them

The main purpose should be relieving pressure for sets to reprint cards to keep the format balanced and don't worry so much about rotation.

My guess is that Foundations doesn't have a Commander line is to make Commander products from expansions more attractive as a purchase and that those Foundation decks would stagnate for 4+ years (till "at least 2029"). They've trained their market to purchase new, updated or different decks perpetually and having a product that won't change for so long in a format that's forever changing makes it an inefficient product to push; either the decks would have to be really overtuned which would eat into their future Commander deck SKUs or it would be 'okay' in which they'd have a dead product after a year or two in a 4+ year cycle. For a 4+ year product there's no real market for a Commander line.

@@HometownTcg it's like, if you took deck/card tech and design methodologies from today and compared them to 10+ years ago, 5+ years ago, and think of what insanity Wizards will want to probably push in the future to juice their most popular format, it becomes a very difficult needle to thread. I'm not saying Commander as a format isn't eternal, just that designing a SKU that will both remain a viable, purchasable product in just the next couple years without making it outclass everything else you want to push for your expansions is more effort and expense than it's worth. Hyperbole, but would Wizards rather sell 1 set of Commander decks for a couple years or all of them?

Either the box itself is going to go way down in price due to sitting on shelves or cards will be cheap which is good. Also I was surprised they didn’t release a updated starter commander deck set to the one that’s been out for years.

Each product would be better off listing how the cards in the box can be used and at the power level or how cards can be utilized in the various formats. Commander: 2 out of 5, Standard: 5 out of 5, Collectors: 5 out of 5, Pioneer: 3 out of 5, Power Level: Base (Base, Social, Base++, Professional).

Personally its refreshing to not have a set dump out commander product. Our format diesnt even know how TF MKM effected our format completely and fhere has been multiple sets since then.

I just went to mtggoldfish to look at standard deck prices. Adding up the top 5 decks, the average cost is 330 dollars. Adding up the top 15 decks, the average cost is 250 dollars. I'm just not willing to spend that money trying to keep up with standard. While some of the cards will graduate and do well in pioneer, many of them have no home outside of standard. I'd rather just play pioneer and have a couple modern decks. Hard to predict how good foundations will be until we see what's in it. There's valid speculation that the set will be a low power set for wizards to print the staple cards they don't want to keep printing in sets to free up card slots for new designs, there is also valid speculation that it will be decently high power since it's setting the power floor for the next 5 years.

@@willjackson5885 The top 5 decks account for 57.6% of the current meta for the past 30 days. The next 5 account for 22.1% and the final 5 of the top 15 accounting for 6.2 percent. That leaves 13.8% for remaining decks after after accounting for the top 15.

Standard rotates every 3-4 years. Are you really wanting to play the same deck for longer than that? How many commanders decks have you built and consistently used for that period of time?

@Olortegui14 I'm still playing hammertime and amulet titan. Those decks have evolved, they aren't 1 to 1 copies. People have been playing tron for a decade. Deck archetypes can live for years in non rotating formats. Some of them have a lot of longevity in standard, like burn, but they can also just expire with rotation without specific support like poison and domain. Commander, I'm not sure that I would keep a deck together for 5 years. It would need to be strong enough to live up to the power creep of my friends decks and have the flavor to keep me interested. Currently, I think my magda and urza decks have the possibility of lasting that long but probably not my other Commander decks. But back to standard. For the less expensive decks. The 90 dollar decks, the 150 dollar decks, those are fine. But you push past that and I'd rather use that money elsewhere in my MTG budget.

The unfortunate fact is could be a good soft reset the product that is labeled as the "starter collection" is more comparable to a deck builder toolkit at twice the price. What they should have done alongside foundations was brought back the challenger decks.

If someone out there wanted to get into commander there would have been plenty of new sets and ways to do that up to now. When you want to appeal to different people you have to sell different things. I think this set will be different. I don't know that I would call it a miss since all signs would point to it being by design, but it will be more of a long slow burn than the usual explosive pop and fizzle before the next set comes out in a few seconds.

No big take here but foundations is a necessary evil for wizards. They need a "core" set that provides basic building blocks to players. It's won't be a huge money maker in the short term but long term it will be a valuable asset to all players. Making it 5 years legal in standard shows wizards is looking at this for long term value and not short term gains.

No, that’s the whole point! No need to have commander products in every release. This is a standard format specific set, let there be standard decks and stop pushing commander in everything. They should have never printed the commander decks in MH3 either and just released Modern starter decks for upgrading. Make entry decks for the format the set is for. look at Chatterfang squirrel general texture foil.... normal card $10. That version $300. Collector will not be continously printed. So if they make really good cards those alt arts will grow in price due to people liking bling bling. A new player 3 years from now finds a awesome card they like and then wants a special version of it that was only printed 3 years ago in a collector set will sell for alot.

Standard became unapproachable because of no core sets. The mechanics are over engineered and it is intimidating to players that are not devoting their lives to MTG. Foundations has an opportunity to make the game easier for new people. Stop being so tunnel visioned on Commander. Stop.

There are far too many products and Wizards released so many Commander decks these past two years. I am glad there is not any Commander decks for Foundations. We just had DuskMourn released a week ago and now 5 weeks later we will have Foundations. There are quite a few reprints. I will skip buying Foundations products and will wait to buy any singles that I may want. There will be Collector boxes, Play Booster boxes, Bundles, Take Home Kits, and worst of all, Jump Start boxes. This set may be good for new players and for Standard. I could care less about tight print runs. You need to remember that NOTHING is special anymore. Oh well, to each their own. Thank you for the video.

Rules committee causes problem. Commander becomes unpopular. Wizards offers solution (standard) to fill the market disruption. Some in the community consider alternate player formats. Wizards keeps selling cards.
